A fashion inspired by the rediscovery of Pompeii some years earlier. The finish has warm antique patina with a few touchups and appears original- where there are chips. There is no earlier painting underneath. Removable slip seats are covered in old muslin and stuffed with straw, they could be restored and reupholstered as desired. Frames are quite strong and tight. This is a beautiful pair of 19th Century Hitchcock chairs in their original decorated mustard paint. They have a guitar shaped seat with newer rushing(probably 1970-80's) Which is not as thick at the original rushing. The chairs measure approximately 18" wide, 18" deep and 33 1/2" tall. These are two very nice hand painted spoon back arm chairs. L would say they were made in England although they look French, l purchased them in England. The one with the brown seat and dark fabric to the back is circa 1880. The other one l would say it later maybe 50 or 60 years old and painted to match the other one as a pair. l am selling them as a pair as they look fine together. The one with cream fabric is a little larger than the other one, maybe one is a ladies and the other one is a gents. The one with the cream fabric is just a tinge darker than the other one. But looks fine and would look great recovered.

Pair 1800 ANTIQUE HITCHCOCK CHAIRS RUSH SEATS Ladder Back Folk Art Hand Painted! This is a great pair of antique circa 1800 rush seat ladder back primitive hand turned hand made painted chairs. Each chair is slightly different than the other with different turnings on each one. Indicating they are not factory made but primitive early era furniture. These wonderful chairs measure approximately 33 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 14 inches deep with a seat bottom height from floor of 16 inches. They each weigh approximately 10 pounds by themselves without any packing materials or 20 pounds total for the both of them. Here's what I stated about these marvelous chair's condition: Pair of early 1800s chairs shows very aged dark patina with one chair having the painted artwork on the seat backs worn away to be barely visible. Other chair's ... moreartwork is more visible in all areas. Finish loss on surfaces especially legs. Nicks. Dings, scratches, scuffs, and worn, rounded edges all evidence of great age and adds much character to the pieces. A shallow wood split noted on top back front splat of one chair. Otherwise, chairs are incredibly strong, solid, sturdy, and stable and able to withstand a substantial amount of weight. Early 1800s Rare Antique Chairs Hand-Painted Stenciled Maine New Hampshire
This rare set of four chairs were purchased in upstate New York by my mother-in-law more than 55 years ago. We acquired them about 1990 and also used them for several years. They have been in storage for 15-20 years and need to be more appreciated. Finding a complete set is very rare! At one time an historian friend from New York told us they were made between 1790 and 1820. The colors are typical of New Hampshire or Maine(different regions used different colors. I believe) They are mustard in color and I was told the paint is a"milk" paint. The hand stenciling and bands around the legs and seats are rust color. All chairs have definite signs of age-chipping. Scratches. Two of them have less chipping on the seats and backs. I have shown the back of the chair that is the most worn. I have always sat carefully in them but also had ... moreteenagers who probably didn't. They have held up well for the amount of use and their age! Although they are sturdy enough right now(very slight looseness in the backs but not the legs) I would have them reglued if I were to continue using them because of our dry climate. Small Pair of French Louis XVI Style Painted Fauteuil Antique Arm Chairs, 19th C
PAIR OF FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE PAINTED FAUTEUILS OF DIMINUTIVE STATURE Late 19th Century. Retaining their original painted surfaces Item# 411UMH15 This is such an unusual and wonderful pair of French Louis XVI Style arm chairs. Particularly for their very striking proportions. They are almost diminutive, though actually still reasonable for a smaller adult to lounge in comfortably- naturally, you will want to look closely at the dimensions and make sure they are a good fit for your space, but they are such an interesting and striking form that when covered in a new upholstery they will certainly be a strike point in whatever room they join. The frames retain their original pale green paint, this with extensive oxidization and wear resulting in an absolutely gorgeous patina. They are surprisingly heavy, the frames crafted with very generous ... moreamounts of dense hardwood- it appears to be either beech or a fruitwood beneath the paint, though this is difficult to ascertain with the paint intact. The design is well thought out. Leveraging the overall square profile of the chairs to their fullest with the sharp molding of the frame, the reeded lines that follow through the handholds and down the arm supports and the tight fluting of the tapered legs. The carved corners over the legs feature deep and quite active floral rosettes of a somewhat atypical influence. The chairs rest over pinched French feet. For anyone with a passion for French antique furniture. This is an absolutely outstanding and somewhat rare find. They are built to last the test of time with a strength throughout indicative of a craftsman passionate about his work. Well cared for, they will certainly be a cherished part of your home for a lifetime. Near Pair of American Painted Antique Lowback Windsor Arm Chairs, Gorgeous!
NEAR PAIR OF AMERICAN LOWBACK WINDSOR ARM CHAIRS Late 19th or Early 20th Century Item# 409TUP10 This is a positively gorgeous near pair of American Lowback Windsor Chairs. Crafted during the late 19th or early 20th century with period techniques after the Philadelphia originals of a century prior. They are entirely bench made, the tooling and craftsmanship absolutely identical to 18th Century examples. The crest rail is crafted in three parts, the top set in soft grooves of the flanking arm rails over a gallery of spindles that openly tenon through the arm rails. The underside of one of the crest rails shows hand forged iron nails affixing the arm rails to the raised crest. The seats are finely carved of a solid broad plank, the bottoms deeply chamfered along the edges to lighten the visual proportions, the bottoms hand planed with light ... morerippling to the surface from the planing blade. The legs tenon through the seat, locked in place with split wedge tenons, these visible in the soft scoop of the comfortable seat. A thin"rain gutter" outlines the gallery of spindles along the back and sides. The legs are distinct to Philadelphia work centers, the swollen cap joining through the seat over a ring-turned swollen baluster, separated from the cylindrical length of the leg with a concave ring turning, the legs terminating over ball feet. As a"near" pair. There are distinct variations between each chair- one is more worn and patinated than the other, the back feet terminating in simple tapering stumps versus a more fully developed ball foot on the other chair, the crest rail fully sunk in one while is simply rests in shallow grooves on the other and minor variations in the turnings and dimensions. The craftsmanship is simply above reproach in both chairs- they retain wonderful worn and patinated surfaces. Pair of French Louis XVI Style Antique Gray Painted Side Chairs, 19th Century
FINE PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE PAINTED ANTIQUE SIDE CHAIRS France. Third Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 502AHL20P Crafted during the later portion of the 19th century. Probably around 1860-80, these crisply detailed and carved chairs exhibit outstanding attention to detail throughout. Characterized not only by finely carved frames, the chairs are mounted with intricate brass embellishments- flanking the crest are a pair of brass draped acanthus pyramidical finials, the fluted stiles are inset with brass stop-fluting over ovular cast rosettes above the curve of the seat; the front and facing corners of the apron all feature sharp cast brass rosettes over highly detailed legs with inset brass stop-fluting and terminating over a brass ringed toe. The legs are particularly fine, each carved around the uppermost portion to appear as a flaming ... moretorchiere. Along the center of both aprons is a swag carving with scattered foliage. With a warm and worn surface. Both chairs retain early gray-teal painted surface over a lower layer of black paint, both significantly and naturally worn over time to result in the current very charming presentation. For anyone passionate about the Louis XVI form, this pair is a statement that add depth to any setting. Note: We are cataloging what was originally a set of six chairs into three pairs.
