Antique Victorian Rosewood Belter Laminated Rosalie w/o grapes 4 piece suite
Offered for auction is this very nice circa 1840's JH Belter laminated Rosalie without grapes rosewood sofa and 3 chair suite in the Louis XV revival substyle. Very solid construction with the show cover on the sofa having a few holes/marks and dings. Chips, cracks consistent with age. Original finish in good condition. One piece of the scroll on the top rail of the sofa is missing but not all that visible. Original Brass castors. 38" to top of crest, 54" inside arms, 70" overall width. A great sofa that can be used as is without reupholstering but probably you will want to put your own show cover on it. Also, the webbing is in good condition and supports well as you sit on the sofa. The large gentleman's chair(43" t) and side chair are covered in a very high quality red and cream damask somewhat recently. The ... morevery desireable and more rare smaller ladies' arm chair(39 1/2" t) is covered in a red and dark blue cut velvet. All chairs are in excellent condition with the usual scrapes, scratches, marks commensurate with their ages. This suite is a put together set and since all are from the same general time frame, the carving and decoration is pretty consistent.

Antique Vict Aest/Ren Rev Laminated Rosewood/partial gilt chair Jelliff?
Offered for auction is this super nice and quirky Rosewood laminated side chair with demi arms. The wood on the back frame of the chair is laminated and there are 6 laminations at the thickest part of the carving. Thickness ranges from 3mm to 5mm. A combination of Renaissance Revial. Aesthetic Movement and Rococo styles and what appears to be Anthemions and leaves as the major decoration on the side stiles. Trumpet turned Ren. Rev. style legs with nice white porcelain casters. Chair is 38 1/4" t x 20" seat depth x 21" seat width x 19" floor to seat crest. Very modest incised and gilded lines and decoration on front seat rail with the sides and back seat rail covered in rosewood veneer. A few chinks, scratches, gouges consistent with age and use. Some stress cracking to the veneer as it passes over the rear legs. Chair ... moreis suprisingly comfortable what with the large seat and the demi arms are right at elbow height as you sit. Recently reupholstered with new burlap webbing. Cotton and hogs hair stuffing and all covered with a nice bright red and gold/tan printed cotton fabric. Sort of mimicks the leaves and curlicues in the chair frame. Some say this treatment of the demi arms is a style John Jelliff used. So maybe this is Jelliff. I prefer local pickup but I can put you in touch with a few shippers for you to contact for shipping.

Laminated rosewood arm chair by Belter even though I have yet to see this particular pattern. Very similar to many of his designs but not one I think is very familiar to most collectors. For sure laminated rosewood as the pictures show. Somebody at some point nailed the fabric onto the back pad through the laminated back. We did all we could to make them disappear but it's still visible in some places. As well known. Anything by Belter is rare to to the common trading market so you have to buy when available. Henkles Meeks Laminated Rosewood Parlor Chairs Belter Period
A scarce three piece set of matching parlor chairs consisting of one arm and two sides. Everyone knows the arm chair is the hardest one to find and this one is in super condition. This set is strongly attributed to George Henkles maker of fine rococo furnishings at the same time period as belter and Meeks hence the strong resemblance. Where Belter and Meeks were stationed in NY. Henkle was in Philadelphia Pa producing a very similar product. There is no doubt to his craftsmanship skills, many would agree his work was as fine as his contemporaries. This is a common patten for him and is executed in rosewood laminated and then carved. These are in great original finish, at this point we have not yet even cleaned them. They have just been covered in a very rich Damask silk and are ready to sit in.
