This is a mid 19th C. Boston Rocker" rocking chair that has been appropriately used for a very long time. This yellow painted chair depicts fruit ... moreon the top rail with gold and red decoration elsewhere. It is 40"H. 23.5"W, 36"D, with a 14.75" seat height. The rocking chair has the traditional rolling seat, curved arms, and seven thin and concave spindles which support the lower back. There is a crack in the center spindle, but it does not seem to affect the chair's use. There is also slight movement in the legs, but they are not lose. This chair easily supports my 230 lbs, and it is very comfortable. This is a great example of a Boston Rocker and the worn surfaces highlight the chair's comfort and longevity. Fantastic quality antique wicker rocking chair. Perfect for a beach cottage chic look. Great for a maternity room or any other room. Babies love to rock! ... moreI think it would best fit a closed in porch. Appears to have been reupholstered somewhat recently. Fabric shows some signs of use/wear but is pretty good overall. White paint finish shows signs of age but has that perfect shabby chic look. A fresh cost of white paint could easily be applied. Wicker has remained in very good shape. The chair was built extremely well and has stood the test of time. It stands roughly 40” tall when at rest. Other measurements in photos. I’m guessing this chair is early 20th century or late 19th century. Fresh out of an old Oceanside estate. Boston area pickup only!

Small Handmade rocker, most likely from the 1930s or 1940s, has wooden pegs that hold the rockers to the rest of the chair, some metal strips for reinforcement ... moreon bottom of seat. Dark brown in color (stained not painted). Has two cracks on the seat (see pics) - the first is in the front of the seat and the second is in the center of the seat from mid center running to the back, between the rungs and onto the backside. There are several other cracks, dings, grooves, imperfections, none of which seem to cause any structural integrity. The chair seems quite solid & is heavy for its size. If you pick up the chair by the back there is some play to the rungs but again, nothing that causes harm to the structure.

Antique American Ebonised & Gilt Decorated c.1840 ‘Boston Rocker’ Rocking Chair
For the Decorative. Rare& Unusual“Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope. Oscar Wilde An American Ebonised& Gilt Decorated c.1840‘Boston Rocker’ Armchair Period: Early/Mid Nineteenth Century Provenance: Unknown Date: c.1830-50 Height: 42.25 inches Width: 22.25 inches Depth: 35.5 inches(with rockers) all at maximum points) The ebonised spindle back elm seated‘Boston Rocker’ Rocking Chair having the traditional rolling seat. Curved arms, large crested top trail, seven concave spindles with open arms and turned legs and stretcher on sleigh rockers with traces of painted gilt floral decoration to both the seat and top rail, survives from the second quarter of nineteenth century America. The chair has expected patination and wear to the right areas with the seat and arms having ... morethe most wear to the ebonised finish with areas of bubbling. The gilt decoration is fifty percent faded as an average. Which makes it beautifully decorative. The piece is stable and rocks without any complaint. There are areas to joints where the paint has come away to a lighter paint. Boston rockers as they are known originated in 1830 and it became very popular in the mid 19th century and were once described by the pioneer American furniture historian Wallace Nutting as“the most popular chair ever made. Which people sit in, antiquarians despise and novices seek. From 1830 to 1890 the Boston rocker was the standard American rocking chair. Its popularity spread from New England across the nation, and it was exported to France, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, China, and India. The earliest versions were handcrafted, but after 1840 Boston rockers were mass-produced by many makers. What distinguishes the classic Boston rocker from other rocking chairs are its gracefully scrolled seat, high spindled back, spool turnings, and rolling crest and headpiece. The first Boston rockers, which were as likely to have come from Connecticut as from Boston, were made of oak with solid pine

Very Old Primitive Boston Rocker made with dowels
For those who appreciate Primitive pieces. This is a rocker I bought over 20 years ago at a local antiques store that sadly is no longer in business. I would guess it is VERY EARLY 1800s. It is handmade with DOWELS! The seat is 16 by 16 and it is 37 inches tall. The original stencil is on the rocker top section and it is on edge of seat. The bottom is rough hewn. Not smooth at all. This rocker was in a fire and there is some damage on the top right front where there was a stencil. No wood is missing. The rest of the stencil is there. Look at last picture. It is in very sound shape. Does not appear to have been reinforced, and has a wonderful patina. It had been used for a long time. This does not have any nails as far as I can tell. It is put together with dowels. I showed several pictures to convey how beautiful this rocker is. You do not ... moresee these very often. Local Pick up. Delivery can be arranged for a fee to tri-state area. After item is PAID. I am in Long Island. NY) No refunds after pick-up. Buyer to sign receipt stating item is accepted.

This rocker is in very good condition. The seat was re-caned at some point and the chair itself was painted dark green but only slight traces of the green color remain in crevices after it was refinished. All of the wood appears to be original. From a bottom view. You can see that three screws were added to tighten the joints on three of the arm supports. Otherwise all of the dowel joints are intact.
