Estate Find: What a rare and fabulous find! This RJ Horner Griffin Finial Hall Throne Chair dating circa 1890s. I am not a furniture expert. However, based on my research I'm convinced this is an original Horner chair. This chair meets every criteria listed here: rarevictorian.com/2008/06/attributing-rj-horner-hall-chairs.html. This chair is truley majestic and could be the centerpiece of any period decor. It sits very comfortable and your mind can't help but wonder at who may have set in the chair in it's history. These chairs were fairly expensive for their time so it was almost assuredly from a home of wealth. The estate this chair was purchased from contained many high end pieces of antique furniture and artwork. This chair is the quartersawn oak variation. There is no label attached to this chair as with some Horner work. ... moreThis isn't uncommon for pieces of his work. There is the light area on the bottom of the chair that has the number"2235" printed in it. This chair is in impressive condition. Especially when you consider it's age. There is a wonderful patina on both arms, across the fron of the seat, and a small amount near the bottom of the back where the stain has been worn off over the years from use. There are a couple minor issues. On the top right of the backrest is a piece of missing ornamentation roughly 1" long. Another tiny piece also missing from the trim on the right leg. There is a small amount of wear along the top edge on the backside of the backrest. A few other minor scratches can be noticed, primarily around the feet area. Other than those, I have not noticed anything wrong with this chair. This chair would be beautiful in any collection. Restoration costs would be minimal if the new owner chose to do so. Great solid mahogany parlor suite! Scarce three piece model made by either Horner or Karpen you be the judge. This one I'm not sure myself. Very large suite and the pieces are massive. Whenever we have a client walk in we use this set because its comfortable and can take abuse. Look at the size of the heads and carvings. It's upholstered in white Naugahyde looks like and seems to be in really fine condition. You could put this right in your home or office and use it for decades before having to do a thing to it. Rj Horner Karpen Mahogany Heavily Carved Parlor Suite
No doubt this is Karpen as you can see. What a fantastic set in mahogany. Massive deep carvings that are as good or better than any you will see on any set Karpen made set. Unusual form with acanthus leaves and floral carved to a center pediment urn floral center and resting on gnarly claw feet. Can't say enough about this set. Usually we have to do carving repairs and such but this set was absolutely wonderfully taken care of. Just finished total restoration being that of glueing all joints and refinishing to top shelf quality. The carvings are thick as pictured most are around 3" thick! Heavily Carved Set Of 8 Mahogany Rj Horner Dining Chairs Claw Feet
Exceptional matching set of 8 dining chairs consisting of two large arm chairs and six large side chairs. This set was manufactured by the RJ Horner company of NY circa 1900 and I will be selling them separate from the rest of the set which is one of the heavily carved dolphin models. We completely striped these down to frames and repaired/refinished them to the highest standards of restoration before just having them covered in black leather and nail head tacks. Very nice set of 8 matching solid oak dining chairs. Just got back from the upholsterers and they look fantastic! Refinished and re-glued so these are tight then covered in high grade leather not Naugahyde. We spare no expense to our restoration and do it to a level as we are putting it into our own home. Carved lions heads and carved crest give these chairs a great look siting around a table. I attribute these to Robert Mitchell of Cincinnati. Ohio due to the carved lions heads and he was known for his barley twist legs. Very solid chairs that need nothing other than a home. Magnificent 1800's CARVED Mahogany RJ HORNER Karpen Parlor CHAIR Winged GRIFFINS
All items listed are Original and Genuine. As always! Victorian RJ Horner or Karpen Parlor Chair. Circa 1880-90. This is an Exquisite piece of furniture! All original hand carved mahogany with a unusual shield back with figural winged griffins on each side. The griffins are approx 14" tall. Overall wonderful original condition with no repairs or breaks. The only flaws to note is a normal seperation at the joint of the shield(see image#4) Also a small piece missing on the front bottom edge only! These do not take away from its appeal. Just needed to note them. The chair is VERY strong and sturdy! All the legs are in great shape and the casters are present. The needlepoint is nice but has a few repairs and you could use it as is or recover. This is a excellent piece of furniture! The work is of either R.J. Horner or Karpen. Dates from the early to mid 1800s and we believe they are made by R.J. Horner. Amazing detail with faces on the skirt and legs. Large claw feet, large eagle heads with open beak on top and very detailed eagle leg and claw on back rest. Also has a flower design and grapes. I have had several antique dealers look at ... morethe chairs and all agree they are made by R.J. Horner or possible Karpen. Very solid with a few stress cracks from age as pictures will show. The seats have the burlap strapping and in very good condition. Arm chair measures 39 1/2" tall, 26" wide arm to arm, 24" deep and 19" from the floor to seat. Side chair is 39 1/2" tall, 24" wide and 22" deep and they have nice wide seats. OUTSTANDING DETAIL AND HIGHLY CARVED VERY RARE CHAIRS. WILL CONSIDER ANY REASONABLE OFFER.
