Antique Upholstered Wooden Rocking Chair-Jacob & Josef Kohn-Vienna-late 1800s?
Offered is this antique upholstered wooden rocking chair made by Jacob and Josef Kohn. Father-and-son furniture manufacturers in Austria in the late 19th and early 20th century. The chair is approx. 28 3/4" high. 28 3/4" from front to back of the rocker and about 16 1/2" wide in the front. Two of the Kohn labels appear on the chair bottom(see photos) There is also another label but it looks as if it was handwritten and it is no longer legible. I do not know what kind of wood it is made from. The chair has two big problems. The biggest is that the left front leg has broken at the base. By the rocker. There was a screw holding it together here but it has come apart. The other problem is that the curved support underneath the back of the chair has cracked. So far it is still holding together. I don't know if these are"fatal" ... moreflaws– I am hoping someone with knowledge could repair these defects and have a beautiful chair. Otherwise. The chair is in good condition. The finish has some scrapes and scratches. Maybe a candidate for refinishing? The upholstery is in very good shape– just some slight fraying on the seat. I don't know if it is original or not. I am not sure exactly how old the chair is. The Kohns formed their partnership in 1867 but I am not sure how long the company lasted. I found references to their pieces from as late as the 1920s. This marvelous antique heavy carved upholstered chair has beautifully detailed rose. Grapes and leaves motifs around the backrest with additional lovely carving on the arms and legs as well as it's original casters. This delightful Victorian era chair came through an old Charleston family estate sale so I can't be sure whether it is indeed American made or perhaps imported from somewhere in Europe earlier in it's journey. It is such an interesting piece to incorporate all three motifs into it's design and although the upholstery needs to be cleaned or replaced, the chair is otherwise in lovely condition. Carved Rams Head antique french upholstered carved chair setee exquisite
French upholstered arm chair/settee. I purchased this at an antiques dealer more than 25 years ago and had it reupholstered by a top of the line interior decorator. We used it in our home but it got almost no use and the upholstery is in like new condition. Some of the pictures show the chair wrapped. As I was going to store it for a time to decide what to do with it until I realized I could sell it on ebay. The distance from the highest point on the chair to the floor is 33. From center to center of the rams heads is 24, from one end to the other of the widest edge of the chair is 31. The wood on the top and bottom of the settee is carved. The legs have very small dings commensurate with age. they need a bit of old english) In picture 4 I have shown 1 of 3 tiny spots at the end of a piece of fancy upholstery edging. They are not stains. ... moreThey are dried upholstery glue that have changed from clear to a bit yellowed. They pick off with a fingernail. I do not want to pick because I do not know if a drop of new glue needs to be put on. I have seen furniture shipped by greyhound bus. But I think the best way is to get a bid from uship. I will ship however the buyer prefers, charging only for packing other than more plastic wrap and transport if I need to drop it more than 1/2 hour from my home in Fort Lauderdale. After retiring to Florida, we looked to replace some items. We found this chair and a loveseat. which we are also listing, stored in a barn and loved the lines. We then located a retired gentleman who had many years experience in restoring antique furniture. He spent a couple of months totally restoring the wood. Then he referred us to a local upholstering company who rebuilt the seat and covered it with this beige velvet. Everything under the velvet is totally new as only the frame existed originally. We chose beige as the other furniture in our living room had bright colors and designs. We dressed this loveseat up with fancy pillows to match ... moreor coordinate with the other bright colors in the room. DESCRIPTION: The gentleman who restored this loveseat said that it was from the 1800s and quite rare; however. He did not remember the name or the origin. CONDITION: This chair is in the same condition that it was when it was totally redone as it has been for show and not for use. Please refer to pictures 7. 8, and 9 above for damaged back which has been patched. Most of the cracks have been filled and only feel rough when you run your hand over them; however, the long one at the lower part of the back has a rough feel; however, everything seems to be intact. MEASUREMENTS ARE: Floor to highest point in back is 35 inches; back is 22 inches across; end of arms are 24 inches across; seat is 20 x 21 inches and it is 14 1/2 inches from the floor to the top of the upholstered seat. From a local estate sale comes this beautiful very old. 1880's, handmade wood antique child's rocking chair. Previously owned by my neighbor who is 92 years old, she tells me this was made by a German carpenter(name unknown) in Kansas City for her mother's 1st birthday! Wood(unknown what kind) is gorgeous and still has shine to it but not sure what to use to polish.so sold as is. Measures 28-1/2" at the floor base and 18" high. This antique chair is for sale for a price of $1000 This is a beautiful antique oak Morris chair; you won't find a nicer one! The body is solid and thick oak and in perfect shape. The photos show the chair in the upright position as well as in the fully reclined position. The cushions were professionally reupholstered with high quality durable new fabric. The original horsehair is in the back cushion keeping it in its original state; the seat cushion has been replaced and is firm and solid. Both cushion covers have concealed zippers and piping edges. Note that the seat of the chair. Under the cushions, was also beautifully reupholstered with the new fabric and the original brass nails were then added back to the chair. The chair back can be set to four different positions simply by sliding the metal bar in the notches.
