Delaware Valley 4-Slat Ladder Back Rocking Chair, Late 18th C Antique, Rush Seat
This is a late 18th C Delaware River Valley rocking chair. These chairs were made along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. They are characterized by the bulbous turnings on the front stretcher, turned front legs, concave and reverse graduated slats and bulbous finials. I suspect that this chair was converted to a rocker in the early 19th C when they became popular. The oak rockers have a great early profile and they were affixed with strong saddle joinery and wooden pegs. The rush seat is old but not original. Likewise, the finish is very old and appropriate, but perhaps not original. This chair is 42.75"H, 24.5"W, 37"D, with a 17" seat height. There appears to be an old repair to the right arm but there is no movement(please see pictures) There is no real joinery movement at all, and ... morethe chair easily supports my 230 lbs. We did nothing to the finish and the chair has a great old patina. It is very likely that this chair has resided in this area(Delaware County, PA) for the last 220+ years. DIMINUTIVE SHAKER LADDER BACK CHAIR, #1(?) ORIGINAL FINISH, NICE FINIALS
Diminutive Shaker ladder back chair. Original finish. Page A nice early and very small Shaker ladder back chair. 27 3/4" tall by about 15 1/4" wide, with some damage to the bottom of the legs, as shown in the pictures. The tips of the well-turned finials are about 18 1/4" above the seat, and the seat is about 10" off the floor. The classy picture replete with a soda can shows just how small a chair this is. I think it is a Number 1, but I'm not sure. I wonder if it was once a rocker- Meader's book shows rockers with two stretchers above, just like this one. The plush seat and webbing, etc. is all hand sewn, and is very old, if not original. No decal or stamped number that I can see. Sold as-is, with no reserve, and it would best be picked up here in southern Rhode Island, or shipping can be arranged. I've put ... morein a set shipping fee of $50.00, but please understand that that probably won't do it. Please see my other auctions for a#4 shawl back Shaker rocker, from the same old Rhode Island estate attic. Thank you. Payment via Paypal or check drawn on a U.S. account is welcome. Immediate Payment is requested after the Winning Bid I generally provide a fixed shipping cost. And ship using either USPS or UPS, usually within 2 or 3 days of receiving payment. On very large items, actual shipping cost will be determined once the item is packed and I have a mailing address for calculation. Fixed shipping price is only for continental U.S. Actual Images of item are shown. I will accept returns only if I have described something incorrectly. I pack thoroughly and safely. If an item is damaged in shipping. Please contact me immediately. Thank you!
