Delaware Valley 5-Slat Ladder Back Rocking Chair, Mid 18th C Antique
This is a mid 18th C Delaware River Valley rocking chair. These chairs were made along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. They are characterized by the bulbous turnings on the front stretcher, turned front legs, concave and reverse graduated slats and bulbous finials. This is a superior example of the Delaware Valley chair. There are turnings above and below the seat. The 5 slats are highly peaked, and the finials are tall and intact. T he splint seat is original. Likewise. The finish is original and the patina is about as good as it gets. I suspect that this chair was converted to a rocker in the mid to late 19th C due to the rocker profile and later screws. This chair is 42.5"H. 25.5"W, 32.25"D, with a 15.5" seat height. There are losses to the back of the front stretcher turnings, ... moreand the left seat support is cracked. There are also losses to the splint seat(please see the pictures) There is no real joinery movement. Aside from the rocker conversion. This chair is quite similar to a chair appraised by Leslie Keno(2/1/10) on the Antique Road Show pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200901A30.html($8-12K) It is very likely that this chair has resided in this area(Delaware County. Late 18th Century Antique American Pad Footed Arm Chair
Note. We have a large selection of full size images below. Be sure to scroll down past the description to view all images! Description: This listing is an American Country Arm Chair with a Rush Seat and Pad Feet circa late 18th Century. Partially composed of 18th century and 19th century parts. A yoke form crest hangs carefully over a vasiform splat and turned stiles. It has a nearly mint condition rush seat with curved heavily patinated arms. Using pegged construction over the tenon mortise joinery, the arms secure into turned legs, both of which terminate in perfect flat padded feet. These are most stunning feet, carefully carved with a strong patina- note the legs are added to the piece and are not original. The front of the chair has a sharply turned stretcher, appearing to be later than the chair. This is a lovely very conversational ... morepiece. But due to the stability of it is only a functional chair for the most careful of homes. In light of it's composed nature, it is not an acquisition for the serious collector, but rather is perfect for the lover of antique furniture looking for that perfect piece to complete their decor. Measurements: 28" wide by 21" deep by 42 1/2" high. Seat sits 16" from the ground. Condition: Visually Good Condition- Slightly loose joints throughout. Pad feet are not original and were later added to the piece. Rear legs are shortened and have filled inserts on outer edges- note pictures below. Seat is almost certainly replaced. Left leg has a stabalized crack and large gouge above seat(visible in photos) Light use indicators in the form of scratches. Chips and dings. Sturdy and stable for practical regular use. Minor chips, dings, and abrasions throughout. Please review photos for full condition. As a partially composed piece, age is difficult to pinpoint with certainty. English Chippendale George III Mahogany Ribbon-Back Antique Side Chairs c1760-80
English George III Period Chippendale Side Chairs w/ Reticulated Ribbon-Back Splats Third Quarter of the 18th Century c. 1760-80 Item# 110001WUW30 This listing is for a pair of Fine English George III Period Chippendale Antique Side Chairs. 18th Century probably circa 1760-70. They are visually exciting works of art. Each with pierced reticulated ribbon-back(or vertical ribbon-back) carved splat designs. The crest is a single piece of carved mahogany that drops onto both stiles, the splat bannisters likewise tenoned into the bottom and top of the chair frame, each being carved of a single piece of mahogany with the softly concave molding masterfully executed. The stiles have wonderful sense of motion, each with true individuality when compared against the next- these sidewind in a subtle bending form into the crest. The leg and stile are ... morea single piece. Moving from a well carved serpentine form in the stile to a chamfered half-cocked and backswept leg. These are locked together in a mahogany box-stretcher structure, whereby the side and back rails of the stretcher tenon into the leg, with the middle crossing stretcher half-dovetailing beneath either side rail to lock perfectly in place. The Marlboro front legs are molded on the front and side, leaving the back chamfered with no design. A serpentine form green upholstered seat rests over this entire structure, with some replaced blocking keeping the frame incredibly strong. This is a somewhat unusual design. Made more so by the exceedingly fragile splat that probably resulted in many sets being destroyed, likewise by the incredible cost of crafting such an intricate design. With a very dark and oxidized finish beneath later polishing, the pair have a nearly ebonized appearance. They feature only the best in English craftsmanship, with incredible carving and tight clean lines. They make a fine acquisition for any formal setting, with a functional sturdiness and structural integrity that will last for centuries to come with proper care. Measurements: 21 1/2" w

Antique George III English Chippendale Arm Chair, c1760
Description: This listing is for a Period English George III Chippendale Walnut Arm Chair with a Vase-form splat. Probably circa 1760. Perhaps the most romantic part of the chair is the sheer intensity of patina throughout the chair. It is simply gorgeous, the entire chair maintaining what appears to be original finish with later layers of wax applied. Most of the repairs are very early and have fully oxidized to become part of the finish. The arms are masterfully turned. It has a light green leather upholstered seat, which appears to be a mid 20th century replacement. Turning the chair upside down, you can see a nearly black level of oxidization. Both front legs have light fluting along the outer corners, finishing the lines. The chair uses peg construction throughout, bringing the entire frame and structure together. This is a wonderful ... morefireside chair, and would bring life and romance to any room. It is structurally sound, though the arms would need to be reinforced for more practical use. The seat measures 23" by 17" The arm measures 27" from arm to arm. It is 38" high. With the seat sitting 18" from the ground. It is a comfortable piece, but more importantly a quite amazing work of art. Condition: Visually Excellent Condition It has numerous repairs to it. Most of which are pictured. Separation of joints here and there. The left hand arm(left hand side if sitting in the chair) has a minor split to the base, where the turned support meets the frame of the seat- this weakens the arm, but does not visually impair the piece. The leather seat has a tear on it, and light crackling throughout the leather cover. Blocks inside of seat frame are 20th century replacements. Age appropriate wear to finish, as well as scratches and abrasions throughout, many of which have fully oxidized to become part of the patina. Please review photos for more full condition. Shipping: Freight Shipping this piece through a blanket wrap driver will cost $195 Shipping a large piece of furniture to your doorstep can

VERMONT PADDLE ARM LADDER BACK ROCKER WITH OAK SPLINT SEAT-RARE PIECE
VERMONT LADDER BACK PADDLE POCKER CIRCA 1780 For sale is this rare Circa 1780 Vermont ladder back paddle arm rocker in oak and maple with an oak splint seat. The chair shows a certain Shaker influence and has descended down within an East Farley Vermont family. It has turned ball finial posts. Original telescoping front supports with thick re-enforcement dowels under each arm. The chair is assembled with fine pegged joinairy. The rocker has obviously been repainted black and has had its seat re-built about 50 years ago when it was painted. Under the black paint it has a very strong original red wash paint. We purchased this with the hopes of having some spare time to restore this piece and remove the newer coat of black paint. Reality has changed our plans. Nevertheless, this remains a wonderfully rare New England treasure. We have seen a ... morevery small handful of these over the last 40 years. Besides their exceeding rarity, this specimen would easily thousands if it remained in it's original red paint finish. We will amend this listing with its exact measurements as soon as we can. It is a wonderful piece of colonial New England furniture being offered at a very real price. SET OF SIX 1790'S FINE BOSTON HEPPLEWHITE CHAIRS IN MAHOGANY AND SATINWOOD INLAYS With our highest compliments we are thrilled to offer you this fabulous late 18th Century set of six fine Boston Hepplewhite period chairs in solid mahogany with stunning satinwood inlays. These chairs have 19" wide seats that are 17" deep. Each chair has 20" high from the floor seats and are 33 1/2" tall at their back rails. The back rails are entirely satinwood inlaid with center Grecian kelix urns surrounded by floral and vine motifs. Each right and left posts are inlaid with a budding flowers. The chairs have satinwood sting inlay. Molded legs with molded back splats and splayed backs and legs. These chairs have been well cared for throughout their lifetime. Their was a very high quality professional museum grade restoration preformed ... moreto one of the chairs front legs. It is hardly worthy of mention and only a trained eye would see this as not being part of the original constructed technique. We have seen it and are obligated by our own disclosure policy to inform you of this. These chairs really took our staff back to school. We thought they may be English due to some construction techniques but we deduced that these chairs were made by a fine Boston furniture shop by an immigrant furniture maker. These are an absolutely remarkable set of Hepplewhite period chairs of the like that are not often seen. The inlay work performed on these chairs are virtually works of art and some of the finest inlay work you will see on period American furniture. These chairs have been recently rebuild and reupholstered. PLEASE READ. BAY COLONY ANTIQUES. Bay Colony Antiques is a dedicated group of New England antique dealers from Springfield. Massachusetts. Pair of European Antique Chairs Hand Made/Pegged
Another fabulous find that we are pleased to offer to the market. This is a pair of antique European chairs that are at least 150 years old or older. These are all original and not reproductions. The detail and skilled craftmanship of these chairs is absolutely amazing. Each chair stands approximately 24.5" high. They have an approximate width of 19.5" and a depth of 16" The height of the seat on these is 19" These are all hand made with fabulous carve lines. There are tiny flowers carved into the top centers and grooves carved into the legs. The backs have a fabulous ribbon candy design. All of the joints on these are pegged and some of them are double pegged. I am unsure as to what kind of wood these are made from but they are a very heavy chair. There are no loose joints on these. I do not know if the fabric is original ... moreto these or not. There is fading and yellowing of the fabric. These are in incredible condition for the age. There are some separations of the wood. Mainly on the back. They have age appropriate signs of wear and use to the finish with a lovely patina. These are a previously owned item and they are being sold as shown. Please view photos carefully and feel free to ask questions. Returns are not accepted for this item. Preview is available by appointment only. These are being sold as a local pickup only. Door to door delivery is available within a 100 mile radius for $75. If you would like to make arrangements to have these shipped on your own please contact us for pickup information.

Original American New England Fan Back Painted Windsor Antique Side Chair
Unusual American Windsor Painted Fanback Side Chair Circa late 18th- early 19th Century. Overall outstanding original condition Item# 120012WYO04 Maple: Legs. Stretchers, stiles, spindles Poplar: Seat Oak: Crest rail This is a rather unusual and quite well preserved original American Windsor Fanback style Side Chair. The overall profile striking in composition. The back of the chair is crafted almost entirely perpendicular to the floor, creating a sense of formality about the chair that is distinct. Sitting in it, the spindles give incredible support and even pressure against the back, but there is some discomfort to the cant of the back, where you almost feel like hunching as you sit in the chair. The seat is likewise rather unusual. Crafted of a solid plank of poplar with a backward cant, the surface entirely flat until it builds up for ... morethe spindles. The legs tenon through the seat, but are not joined with wedge-splits as is often found in the through-tenon joinery. Instead, the pressure of gravity and weight of the sitter is used to keep firm joinery of the legs, a quite successful design that has remained firm for nearly two hundred and fifty years. The back is crafted of nine tapered spindles of maple, these flanked by turned ring-and-baluster stiles that tenon through the seat. Each of the spindles peg through the crest rail along the bottom of the crest rail, the serpentine oak rail flowing into beautiful and precise curl-carved ears on either side. The chair rests over uniquely turned maple legs, the rounded taper of the feet somewhat unusual, each locked in place by an H-form maple stretcher with thick swollen turnings. This is a wonderful selection for anyone passionate about windsor chairs. Especially those with distinct variation from the norm. With a grimy early paint, not original, and a well preserved patina throughout, this is an absolute treasure in well preserved and relatively untouched condition(other than the later painted surface) It is a piece you will enjoy in your home for a lifetim

American New England Windsor Hoop Back Bamboo Turned Side Chair c. 1790-1810
Click for a slideshow of detailed pictures! American Hoopback Windsor Side Chair w/ Bamboo Turnings New England. C. 1790-1810 Item# 120009QOE16B Woods: Pine(plank seat) Maple(legs. Spindles& stretchers) Hickory(crest rail) This is a very handsome hoopback example crafted with utmost precision featuring carved bamboo stiles. The steam bent hickory crest rail is perfectly formed. Bombe before concaving in to tenon through the plank seat. The seven maple spindles are graduated, very carefully and precisely carved to swell at each joint where a thin channel highlights the joint to resemble a shoot of bamboo. These tenon through the crest rail, many actually peeking over the rail now from years of shrinking and expanding. The seat has wonderful form, being softly scooped out and shaped, a shallow channel framing the gallery of spindles along ... morethe back. The four legs tenon into, but not through, the seat surface, leaving it undisturbed by anything but the deep and wonderful pitting and oxidization that has become it's patina. Deep in the grooves and cracks, small remnants of the original green paint add to this, leaving a piece of it's history behind. The underside of the seat has more of this dark milk paint, mingled amongst the nearly black oxidization and staining throughout. The maple legs mirror the spindles, though with much embellishment, swelling sharply at each joint and tapering down at the feet. Maple has the wonderful distinction of being crisp and tight when carved, the reason why it is used in most windsor legs- on the bamboo design, this becomes particularly attractive. An H-form stretcher locks the legs in perfect balance. This is a very fine hoopback windsor. An excellent selection for anyone passionate about this form. Crafted in the height of the period, with the remnants of it's original color and undisturbed construction, this is a chair you will cherish and enjoy. If well cared for, this chair will last many generations while still being fully functional for daily enjoyment. Measure

Fine New England 18th Century American Chippendale Period Arm Chair, c. 1765-75
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for a Fine American New England Chippendale Period Upholstered Arm Chair. Mahogany, probably Massachusetts circa 1765-75. It has a softly serpentine crest over a slightly backswept upholstered back. The stiles are full length of mahogany, stretching from the crest through the feet to create an incredibly strong frame, the legs being square, canted with chamfered interior corners. Both upholstered arms have a soft serpentine, curving outwards before joining the molded mahogany arm supports, flanking an upholstered seat stuffed over the square frame. Mahogany square legs are stretched with a box stretcher, the center bar tenoned into the side stretchers. The old finish is worn and full of character, ... morea deep wonderful patina glowing through the legs and stretcher. We have not removed the upholstery from the frame to examine the secondary woods beneath. This is a gorgeous chair for anyone with a passion for the Chippendale Period. Practical and functional with incredible strength in joints and broad comfortable proportions. These chairs are quite hard to find, and in this simply outstanding condition is particularly special. As a predecessor to the later Federal Period Lolling Chair, you can see the evolution from one period to the next, where eventually the legs would taper and backs gain height. It is a restrained design from the upholstered back chairs of Thomas Chippendale's book with a distinct American taste. This is a much sought after acquisition for serious collectors and 18th Century American enthusiasts. It will be treasured in your family for generations to come. Measurements: 26" wide x 24 3/4" deep x 43 1/4" high; seat is 15" over ground Condition: Visually Outstanding Condition Finish very early with a dark glowing patina. Reupholstered in the 20th Century with significant staining. Dings. Wear to finish and abrasions throughout, consist

American Chippendale Period Armless Antique Side Chair, 18th Century, c. 1760-80
American Chippendale Upholstered Back-Stool(Armless Side Chair) Late 18th Century. C. 1760-80 Item# 120011QQU24 This American Chippendale Antique Side Chair is a distinct variation from the typical side chair of the Chippendale Period. Was referred to by Charles Allen of Philadelphia as a" back-stool chair" in his 1774 advertisement; likewise. In other inventories and price lists of the period it is noted as"Chair Frame for Stuffing over back and seat with Marlborough feet" Developed due to a distinct demand for comfort in seating furniture, this chair is an excellent example of this form. They were commonly coupled with a matching foot stool. The serpentine of the crest is matched in the swell of the seat apron. The chair back and legs both canted to create a fine overall curvature when viewed from the side. The square ... moremarlborough front legs are bevelled on the inner-most corner, the back legs squared with a chamfered tapering beneath the stretcher. The legs are locked in place with a box stretcher, the medial stretcher dovetailed into either of the side stretchers. Recently upholstered. The covering is brand new and entirely fresh, soft a comfortable over the early(though not original) interior stuffing and webbing. It is sturdy and comfortable for daily regular use; still retaining a very early dry finish, this is a piece you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. Similar examples can be found at Winterthur, including some interesting insight into how these chairs were used in the home- they are commonly seen as part of a parlor setting. Either opposing it's pair or across from a wingback arm chair, usually beside a small candlestand or tea table. Examples are available from New York and Pennsylvania as well as scattered through the New England states, making it a difficult piece to place with certainty. American New England Sack Back Knuckle Arm Windsor Chair, Rhode Island c. 1780
American New England Knuckle Arm Sack Back Windsor Chair Probably Massachusetts or Rhode Island c. 1780-1800 Item# 130102JGG13 Poplar(seat) Maple(legs. Stretchers, arm supports, outside and underside of knuckles) Oak(arm rail. Crest rail) Hickory(spindles) This is a very fine American Sack Back Knuckle Arm Windsor Chair. Crafted in the New England States, probably Massachusetts or Rhode Island c. 1780-1800. It is a high style piece, the six long and tapered hickory spindles tapering through the round oak crest rail, this wrapping in a perfect arch to tenon through the oak arm rail, which continues out to terminate in carved knuckle arm holds. The arm holds are pieced, the oak arm rail forming the primary interior while the rest of the knuckle on the side and bottom are of carved maple, attached to the arm rail with tiny wooden pins. The flow ... moreand precision of these knuckles brings the entire chair's form together, being both bold and comfortable as they splay outward on either side. The arm rail rests upon turned maple arm supports. These with a slightly swollen medial baluster embellished with paired parallel scratched-bead channels crowned and footed with very sharp ring turnings. The oval seat is scooped and carved, a thin grooved channel framing the spindles, the wear of the seat revealing much of the earlier layers of red paint. The legs tenon through the seat in the normal fashion. These with the common ring-and-baluster turnings terminating in a long tapered foot, contracting slightly faster than a smooth taper would dictate in the Rhode Island manner. The H-form stretchers have a soft swell, the medial stretcher with ring-turnings on either side. Perhaps what makes this form so successful is the same thing that has led to some looseness in it's joints: the chair has an action-oriented profile. Leaning almost forward like it is ready to start a race. While a more squared leg splay would be stronger and more well-balanced, this chair was not designed to be a restive form. This is a special piece,

English George III Chippendale Slip Seat Arm Chair, 18th Century c. 1760-80
English George III Chippendale Antique Arm Chair Third Quarter of the 18th Century. C. 1760-80 Item# 090009RRW13 This listing is for a English George III Period Chippendale Walnut Arm Chair with a Vasiform splat over square molded legs. Probably circa 1760-80. The chair has great character in the finish, deeply oxidized dings and abrasions from years of use covered in countless applications of beeswax for a glowing smooth surface throughout. It has seen much use, many repairs evident throughout the chair, including repairs to the vulnerable arm supports and pieced out back feet. However, repairs are very early and have oxidized to become part of the overall character of the chair. The yoke crest rail has a soft slope to it. A single piece with the stiles tenoned into it(repaired at both joints) over a bold vasiform solid splat, this joining ... moreinto the molded shoe over the back rail. The arms are wonderfully shaped. Employing the cyma-curve that so dominated architecture and furniture designs of the mid-to-late 18th Century, creating a comfortable arm rest over finely turned baluster arm supports. These flank the trapezoidal light green leather upholstered slip seat seat, which appears to be a mid 20th century replacement. Turning the chair upside down, you can see a nearly black level of oxidization. Both front legs are square with subtle molding at the outer corners, the back legs square and canted, all four locked in place with a box stretcher. This is a wonderful antique 18th Century arm chair. Ideal for a home with a Colonial decor. Not a piece for serious collectors due to the numerous repairs, it is a visually delightful work for enjoyment in the home. Measurements: seat dimensions 23" by 17" 27" wide(arm to arm) x 38" high to crest. 18" high to seat. Condition Report: Early finish preserved under many later layers of wax. Probably not original finish. Separation of joints throughout. The right arm(left hand side if sitting in the chair) has a minor split to the base, where the turned
