ANTIQUE 18TH C PAINTED NEW JERSEY LADDERBACK CHILDS CHAIR RUSH SEAT COLONIAL OLD
TAKE A SEAT! For those collectors out there with a good eye for antiques. Please take a peek at our New Jersey 18th c Child's Farmhouse Chair recently discovered in a Garden State old house sale, with magnificent black over old red paint untouched condition with good patina wear, and wonderful natural bullrush seat, with shaped front stile and good height on floor, sturdy and sound. This is truly a child sized chair, a prized find out in the field, we are pleased to bring to the table for purchase this week. Ladderback Chair measures a mere 28" tall with a seat proportion of 13" x 16.5" resting on tapered original legs not cut down. Not ended out. The rungs clear the floor 3" all good original proportions. Nicely turned simple design, with elegant country elements, but not a crude depiction by far; the little chair ... moreexudes much grace. I have a news clipping that shows children of period times often turned these over, holding onto upper ladderback ends, pushing them across the floor, to learn to walk and steady themselves; the one so pictured looks very much like this one right on target. Black paint made from oxides was the most common 18th c color that hangs on tight and ages well. Please study the pictures to see fine detials of genuine guaranteed antique period chair, taken outside at all angles. I am a chair-o-phile myself. Some women said to collect purses, my weakness was always 18th c chairs. Each one bears the honesty of times past, portable, country hand made, vernacular design, and ever useful. I would state this example is wearing its second rush seat; natural rush has a lifespan of approximately 100 years before crumbling, this seat is replaced but with quality natural correct materials that alone has great value. See the underside for tight weave, this alone can cost $100 nowdays with skilled seat weaver using soaked bullrush. Primitive Child Chair will hold the weight of real child. Or make great teddy bear or doll display; or can hang off Shaker wall peg rack in country home.

Two matching ladderback chairs with rush seats. Sturdy. No wobble. Overall height 41" Back only height 24.5" Seat area front 16" back area of seat 13.75" Seat is only 15.5" inches from the floor so it is low by today's standards. These chairs have the usual patina from age, including small scratches. There is no indication of maker and may have been locally commissioned here in NE Connecticut. However, they are a very nice example of the style and would look great flanking a large fireplace or in a sunny reading room. Sold only as a pair.

Antique Wooden Ladderback Chair With Basketweave Seat
Offered is this antique wooden ladderback chair with basketweave seat. The chair measures 32 1/4" high to the top of the back. Is approx. 18" wide at its widest(in the front) and is about 15" deep. As you can see from the photos. The chair is rather low to the ground, with the top of the front leg only 14" high. The basketweave seat is about 18" wide in front. 14" wide in back and about 13 1/4" deep. I do not know what kind of wood it is but it is fairly lightweight. I have been told that this chair is probably from the mid-1800s but I don't know that for sure. I don't know if the basketweaving on the seat is original but if it was redone it looks like it must have been redone a long time ago. The chair is in very good condition considering its probable age but there are various marks. Scrapes, etc. ... moreacquired over the years. I don't think I would trust an adult's weight on it due to its age and construction- I would recommend using this as a decorator piece only. Although not particularly heavy. This is a large and bulky item so shipping will be rather expensive. I am calculating the shipping using FedEx Ground(usually the cheapest for big items) but will send USPS if that is cheaper. Very old 18th or 19th century 4-slat ladderback colonial-style chair. Chair measures 37 1/2 inches in height and 17 1/2 inches across front of the chair. Seat measures 14 1/2 inches from the floor. It appears chair has been shortened due to feet repair. Not certain. However. This chair displays great patina and has great character! The chair appears to be mortise and tenon. We note reddish colored stain. On the underside of the chair. We are not experts in this field, but rungs,slats and other parts appear to be hand-hewn. We assume that some alteration has been done at the bottom. Note mortise and tenon applied feet. Note all close-ups)Chair appears to be quite old. Perhaps early or mid 1800's? The mortise and tenon repairs to the feet appear to have been done in the late 1800's or early twentieth century. Perhaps earlier. The posts are shaped at their foot and appear to be full original height. The woven split oak seat is an appropriate replacement. The chair is solid is very solid with no breaks. Height to the top of its back- 31 inches. Nice example with great construction- scribe marks and wooden pegs evident. Pick up is very much preferred. This is an original. All wood, handmade beautiful ladder back chair in excellent condition. It has a hand woven splint seat which is probably a replacement job, judging by its near perfect condition. This is not a large chair but would be suitable for smaller, lighter persons or youths. Here are exact measurements: Chair is 17 1/2 inches wide at front, Height of seat is 15 1/2 inches off floor, measurement from front of chair to back at seat level is 14 inches, Floor to tips of back legs on top is 31 3/4 inches, Back is approximately 14 inches wide at seat and 14 inches deep. The back uprights are 15 inches apart at the tips. This chair has been in our family for over 150 years and originated in Pennsylvania. Came down the Ohio river on a flat boat when my relatives moved to Indiana in 1834, and I inherited it in 1989 from the family estate.

Pair Tall Antique Ladderback Chairs Arm/Side, Lovely VGAC but Need Woven Seats
This auction is for two beautiful matching. Antique four-rung ladderback chairs. There is one armchair and one side chair. They do not have seats, so you get to choose the style you want to have woven for them. Otherwise, they are in wonderful condition considering their age. There are some surface blemishes but no deep scratches or scars, no missing chips of wood anywhere. The major place of wear on the armchair is the armrests, the upper surface of the arms. I have not attempted to polish or cover the blemishes prior to taking the photos. Except for dusting. They are in original, unrestored, unrefinished condition, as they were when they were passed down to me. Someone has put metal discs on the bottoms of the feet in the not too recent past. The armchair is slightly larger overall than the side chair. By an inch or two. I measured the ... moreseat of the armchair for dimensions inside the arms and the side chair. The design of the chairs is so beautiful. With gracefully scalloped rungs as backrests and turned post at the back and front, as well as turned front braces for the legs. The arms have beveled edged on both sides of the upper surface, and a deeply carved spiral decorating the sides of the armrest at the front. I believe that the wood may be hickory, but that's just a guess, not a guarantee. My opinion is that with the most minor restoration. Of course, the wooden frames of these chairs, would be museum quality. I do not know whether new seats would disqualify the chairs as being museum quality. But if you're looking for a pair of wonderful colonial antique chairs with a french country feel, these are them. Dimensions of armchair: All measurements are approximate. BERGEN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY HACKENSACK VALLEY LADDERBACK ROCKING CHAIR
This chair is a classic 19th century Hackensack Valley. Bergen County, New Jersey, rocking chair. The back posts, topped with the typical turned urn finial stand 37.5 inches tall. You can see similar examples in the collection of the Bergen County Historical Society on their website. There is a repair at the point where a rocker fits onto a post. Note the wear to the natural rush woven seat. Chair is 18 inches wide and 16 inches tall at the seat. You rarely see the rockers. We are listing this chair as pick up only but it can be boxed and shipped via UPS.
