This is a very good quality set of 2 antique country farmhouse spindle back rush seat dining chairs. Ca. 1800-1899 but can be older. I believe it is solid oak and ash. The beautiful chairs were attributed to Lancashire region in England. Both chairs boast graduated spindle shaped backs above hand woven rush seated seats. Antique Pair of Rush Seat Chairs with Folk Art Paint in Untouched Condition

They are sturdy and in an original as found state. A Folk Art Grain Paint style was used to imitate a high quality wood. The rush seats are old. Possibly original, and are tight with some loss to one seat(see photo) The decoration shows wear, marks, and scratches. I have sat on them but I would recommend occasional use only. They are being sold for local pickup only by you or the shipper of your choice. I am located in Newtown PA 18940 close to I-95 between Philadelphia and Trenton NJ. Two matching ladderback chairs with rush seats. Sturdy. No wobble. Overall height 41" Back only height 24.5" Seat area front 16" back area of seat 13.75" Seat is only 15.5" inches from the floor so it is low by today's standards. These chairs have the usual patina from age, including small scratches. There is no indication of maker and may have been locally commissioned here in NE Connecticut. However, they are a very nice example of the style and would look great flanking a large fireplace or in a sunny reading room. Sold only as a pair.

Each with a delicately stenciled grapes-and-leaves decoration, as well as other stenciling on the front edge of the seats, on the top bars, and on some of their rails. These chairs are unsigned, and are in excellent condition, nice and sturdy, not wobbly, and having only a few small scuffs due to use. The patina on their rush seats(which are original to these chairs) is really nice. Please see the photos to appreciate just how handsome these are. I strengthened all four chairs using 3" recessed screws covered with maple plugs for an original look. We are pleased to offer this EXCEPTIONAL pair of 19th century chairs. The pair feature heavily carved. Walnut frames. They are high back with a slightly Gothic profile. The backs are open in a Ladder Back fashion with large, rounded medallions at the tops. The rounded sections are arched and scalloped on their lower sections. They are exquisitely carved in an intricate urn and floral pattern which is similar to that of the French Brittany style. A carved, scalloped design is also present. The lower cross"ladder" supports are arched, with the arches notched in a flower petal design, and have a center carved fan shaped accent. The upper side supports feature sections of elongated turned wood and unique finials. The legs are turned wood with both upper and lower supports. The front legs are accented with double turned wood supports ... moreas well as an upper support which repeats the design of the ladder back pieces. The rush seats are original and feature thick fibers which are assembled in 4 distinct, triangular patterns. The chairs are in very good condition for their age. The wood has some minor areas of wear to the finish. The seats have some expected wear to the fibers but, in general, they are also in very good condition. Pair 1800 ANTIQUE HITCHCOCK CHAIRS RUSH SEATS Ladder Back Folk Art Hand Painted! This is a great pair of antique circa 1800 rush seat ladder back primitive hand turned hand made painted chairs. Each chair is slightly different than the other with different turnings on each one. Indicating they are not factory made but primitive early era furniture. These wonderful chairs measure approximately 33 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 14 inches deep with a seat bottom height from floor of 16 inches. They each weigh approximately 10 pounds by themselves without any packing materials or 20 pounds total for the both of them. Here's what I stated about these marvelous chair's condition: Pair of early 1800s chairs shows very aged dark patina with one chair having the painted artwork on the seat backs worn away to be barely visible. Other chair's ... moreartwork is more visible in all areas. Finish loss on surfaces especially legs. Nicks. Dings, scratches, scuffs, and worn, rounded edges all evidence of great age and adds much character to the pieces. A shallow wood split noted on top back front splat of one chair. Offered here a charming pair of 19th century Sheraton Hitchcock stenciled arm chairs with rush seats. Both chairs have a beautifully stenciled fruit bowl and floral decoration on their middle back slat. As well as other stenciling on the front edge of the seat, on the top bar, and on some of their rails. These chairs are unsigned, nice and sturdy, not wobbly, and they have some scuffs due to normal use. Both rush seats, however, have a small area where the rush has been torn and worn-away. For sale are a set of 6 early American chairs. These are in a Hitchcock style although I am unsure as to whether these are. In fact, Hitchcock's. Based upon family letters, they were made before 1832 and built somewhere near the Massachussetts/ Connecticut border. These are in used condition and have the original rush seats. The backs feature hand-painted birds(perhaps doves? on a branch. Other hand-painted accents are featured as well. These are all in great shape. Although showing 180 years of light wear. Sturdy painted folk art Hitchcock-style dining chairs, black with rush seats
Set of four matched chairs with genuine rush seats. Based on their folk art motifs and deep patina. These appear to be early 19th c. or late 18th c. older than the Hitchcock company founded in the 1820's that made such folk art an American furniture tradition. The workmanship and hardness of their wood make them noticeably sturdier than those from the late 19th century or 20th centuries. These were purchased at the estate sale of a Louisville executive. PAIR ANTIQUE NEW ENGLAND MAPLE SPINDLE HAND CARVED SPLAT BACK RUSH BOTTOM CHAIRS
Here is a really terrific pair of antique hand crafted maple spindle and splat back rush bottom seat chairs in wonderful and what I believe to be original condition as described in detail above and shown in multiple clear photographs from all sides. Included to highlight their construction and design with their lovely maple wood, hand turned spindles and fine lines including their graceful legs and stretchers. These two chairs came from a Charleston, SC estate but the family originally had lived in Connecticut going many generations back and it is believed these chairs traveled south with them back when they moved to the Charleston area. These chairs stand 34 inches tall and measure 16 1/4 inches wide by 16 1/2 deep, so they are some what diminutive in size as is appropriate for their age,which I believe to be over 200 years old. The seats ... morethemselves at 17 inches in height above the floor and are 15 1/2 inches at their widest point and 14 1/2 inches deep, front to back. The side view of the two back to back included in my photo's really shows the lovely bowing to the wood used in their design. Although the chairs are tight and quite functional, their real value to me is as gorgeous late 18th to early 19th century decorative accent pieces where they will continue to be loved and respected for a long time to come. I believe I can safely pack and ship these chairs Greyhound if you are willing to pick them up at the bus terminal nearest your home when they arrive for between $80-$110 depending upon where you live in the lower 48 states.
