Crafted in the Louis XVI taste during the first quarter of the 20th Century is a classic example of the very successful design. Of diminutive proportions. It is more of an oversized bergere arm chair than a true loveseat. The width ideal for lounging casually with a good book in a comfortable setting. The crest is a perfect arch, sharply angled at each corner to form the squared back- this balance of tight lines with soft flowing form was a difficult harmony to achieve, conforming to the clean form important to Neoclassical designs while still being warm and inviting. This piece captures it perfectly, the arched crest mirrored in the projecting bowed apron and the soft cyma-curve of the arms and arm supports. These details giving shape and depth to an otherwise austere adherence to the square. Crisp carved details bring elegance to specific elements of this fine sofa: the acanthus carved arm supports or reeded and curled handholds. The fine deep molding of the frame with gilt highlights over a mellow green ground, and the deep rosette carvings on each knee. FABULOUS Antique LOUIS XVI Blue Oval Back French Arm Chair!
This is a really GORGEOUS antique French blue velvet upholstered arm chair with an oval upholstered back! Purchased at an estate sale they said it was very old. This is a WONDERFUL chair made in the style of Louis the XVI and I believe it dates back to the late 1800's. Obviously it had been reupholstered as the upholstery is in EXCELLENT condition with no rips. Holes, tears or fading anywhere. The blue color is just so FANTASTIC! It has brass nailhead tacks everywhere there is material- even on the back of the chair! The wood is possibly a fruitwood or walnut. I am not sure but it is a WARM BEAUTIFUL color! It has GORGEOUS gilded(probably painted) carved flowers on the crest of the back and the legs have all kinds of carving with a flower on each and deep fingertip grooved column carvings with gold too. These are carved all around the ... moreoval back(in front) and along the sides of the seat and even the horizontal wood going to the back is carved! Distinctive legs look like columns. This fine French Louis XVI Influenced Antique Side Chair exhibits the highly embellished qualities of the Aesthetic Movement furniture. Crafted during the last years of the 19th Century, probably c. 1880-1900, this piece is a difficult form to find- closely adhering to the neoclassical spirit of the Louis XVI style, it's strict lines are softened by the deep swooping crest rail and the curves of the square back legs. Flanking the crest rail on either side are floral bouquets carved of the solid. Not simply impressed in gesso, beneath raised flame finials at the corners. The frame is molded with overlapping scales along the front and repeating carved teeth along the sides, ... morethe apron likewise embellished with carved rosettes at each corner over fluted and turned legs that terminate in original caster feet. The upholstery is in"excellent" condition, a soft and comfortable fabric with machine-embroidered bees.
