Antique Vintage Salt Glaze Brown Crock Jar 1 1/2 QT Wax Seal
Up for bid is a antique brown crock salt glaze jar used for vegetables or fruit. The lid was sealed to the jar with wax. Such jars date back to the 1200's however this one is probably from the 1800's. This jar is 1 1/2 qt. capacity. Stands 7" tall and is 3 1/2" across. You couldn't ask for a nicer piece for it's age as it has one small chip and wear along the rim and another chip on the side, each about 1/5" and some glaze is missing at the bottom, appears to be a manufacturing flaw. Otherwise there are no other cracks or other chips. This would be a great addition to a collection. Please take a minute and look at my other listings which are varied and different. I will combine postage I have considerable inventory I need to consolidate and doesn't help that I keep adding to it. I particularly like the 1940's ... moreand 1950's but do list other items so check back. If you find something you like remember I will combine postage. Antique 2 gal G I Lazier Picton CW Ontario Cobalt Flower Decor Stoneware Jug
G I Lazier. Picton, Canada West, circa 1850, 2 gallon Stoneware Jug THIS JUG HAS NO HANDLE and is being offered AS-IS. The notes that ceramic tablewares were primarily imported into Canada from the UK and France all through the 19th century. And that only utilitarian wares were actually produced domestically, and only from the mid-century on. George Lazier, and others like him, were the pioneers of the industry. The same article notes that in the early stages of the industry in Canada, the clay itself was as often as not imported, much of it from south of the border. This stoneware jug. Ever so slightly lopsided, thrown in the pottery of George I. Lazier, in Picton, Canada West, sometime around 1850, has only one problem. its handle was broken off. The jug is 11-1/2 inches(29.2 cm) tall. 9-5/8 inches(24.5 cm) in diameter at its widest point ... moretapering to 8-1/2 inches(21.6 cm) in diameter at the base. The tapered form of the jug is noteworthy because by the 1860s stoneware potters on both sides of the border had given up the ovoid form in favor of straight-sided jugs and crocks; in ten or fifteen years potters had learned two important things, how to modify the clay mix so that it would slump less during firing and to take advantage of the fact that more straight-sided vessels could be fitted into the kiln each time they fired it. Although well on the way to being a straight-sided vessel, this is still a relatively heavy jug(9.04 pounds/ 4.1 kg) slightly ovoid, thick-walled, and it did slump somewhat during the firing, all implying that it reflects production in the early part of the period, closer to 1850 than to 1867. What is most interesting is that the scar the broken handle left where it should have been joined to the body is completely smooth, indicating that the handle was never adhered properly to the body in the first place. At the neck there was good melding with the handle so that scar is appropriately rough, but the only thing that ultimately held the handle onto the body was the layer of glaze

He is thinning out his collection beginning with the broken ones. This was broken into pieces and glue repaired. I'm sure a professional repair job could be possible. Glaze hairline cracks that you need extra light to see& doesn't take away or cause any issues. The stoneware crock is 6" tall& 5.75" across the top. Two tone or two shades of brown. Up for your consideration is this wonderful Alberta Potteries Ltd. 2 gallon stoneware crock. The maker's mark dates this to the original Alberta Potteries which was in business from 1935 to 1938, in Redcliff, Alberta. Alberta Potteries was Medalta's only competition at that time. This 2 gallon crock stands 10 1/2 inches tall and is 9 7/8 inches across the rim. The only issue I noticed is a 1 1/2 inch area of crazing on the rim. Of course there are imperfections from the maker of this crock, such ... moreas air bubbles in the glaze, a few areas where the glaze is missing- mostly along the top and bottom rims and inconsistencies in the glaze, including drips. There is a mis-placed piece of clay on the inside bottom that was glazed over. Of course these imperfections are what gives this crock it's appeal. I think there is a signature on the bottom, but I am not able to make it out. Please be sure to inspect all the pictures for condition before buying. As always. In good antique or vintage condition with no chips. Or breaks. There is a spider crack on each crock/dish on the inside bottom and they do not appear to go through to the outside.There is a spider crack on one of them that goes down the side and about an inch along the bottom. And it does go through to the outside. I put water in it to see if it would leak. It does have a slow leak. So if you were to plan on purchasing them for a dog or cats dish, that one would be good to put it's dry food in that one. And water in the other one. And no repairs or cracks. Displays nice! Offered as is. these crocks weighs almost 5 lbs together. Smaller crock measure 5" tall and larger measures 6 3/4" tall and each are about 4 1/4" to 5" wide. An antique White Hall# 2 Crock in Great condition. the crock is marked#2 and originally had a flower design on each side but the left side is worn as shown in the pics. Under it is the state of Ill. with a"W" over an"H" then SP&S Co. Below it on the bottom it says Whitehall.Ill. All Lettering is blue. The top of the crock is 9 5/8" across and the height is approximately 9 1/2" from the base to the top. I show all aspects of the crock and most of the wear is on the bottom rim where it sits. The antique white stoneware pottery lid cover fits onto an antique crock-it is large and thick and heavy(see pics) and it measures approx. 12.25" across in diameter x approx. 2 1/8" tall. As you can see there is a natural birth mark on this crock that was there and has been there since the firing of this crock. I believe that the maker did it late in the process and felt it better due to the perfection of this piece to just leave it be instead of scraping it. The parent of Lady Ellens' Fine Ware business, is a very fine genuine and desireable marked and early ovoid urn form salt glazed stoneware crock stamped WM E. WARNER WEST TROY with a hollow Numeral"2" beneath indicating two allon capacity size in nice mid grey smooth patina with attractive country good looks. Snatched from a deaccessioned downsized collection of over 30 years in New York State just last week. This item is market fresh and never wandered far from its manufacture area and was found within 50 miles of where made, very local indeed. That's just how I like to find them for you as I know many collectors seek only local stonewares for their collection near to where they live. Please study the pictures taken outside in natural ... moresunlight at all angles to see how lovely this choice earlier form crock really is from all views front. side, inside, bottom. stamped very blue incised signature credentials, and lug ear twin handles. I see only pencil eraser sized brown discolor drip on side under handle Picture Three. All else is smooth even color with NO staining and a nice clean Albany glazed brown slip coated interior. No cracks, hairlines, no rim chips, no stone pings, the clay was finely milled during manufacture and it really is evident is final quality of output from the Warner factory in upstate New York, near king in stoneware productions of all the states for fancy works as well as early forms for collectors. You will not be disappointed with this one, it is as fresh and perfect as one can find at affordable price on the market today. One is 1/2" and the other is 1/4" both are located towards the back of the crock. Right next to the larger chip is a very faint hairline crack, it is somewhat visable in the last 2 photos. Also there are some small small areas or discoloration, again visable in the photos. The Crock stand 9 1/4" tall and 9 1/2" across the base. All in all this is a very nice crock for its age. Antique Pottery. 2gallon. found in woods! Blue heart #2 on side.
This pottery type jug was found in woods near an old grits mill. Near Sumter, SC. It has broken handle, and hairline spot under the cobalt 2, see pic) but otherwise looks good and holds liquid. Cobalt blue heart with number 2 inside. It has no cracks or places. Other than mentioned handle, that look bad. PayPal only. Buyer pays all shipping costs. No refunds.
