I was told that it came from the Jim Wright family. I talked to a friend of Mr. Wright's and he does remember his father and mother loving antiques and having a roll top. Mr. Jim Wright studied law and became Speaker of the House in 1986. In 1989 he was elected Mayor of our Weatherford Texas. I actually worked for him during the Vietnam War mailing out flyers for our service men. This desk is in great condition with original finish. It is solid and heavy and is on rollers. Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. One of the most interesting thing about this desk is that in the upper corner of the right door there is a piece of paper taped inside that lists the presidents of the United States and has 24 of them with Woodrow Wilson being the last one and the date listed is 1893. This piece looks like perhaps the top may have been added later, not sure, and also where the slant top is looks like it was altered at one time as well. An amazing piece, all pegged. Antique Bed, restored and modified to modern Queen Size
We bought this bed from a reputable antique dealer in San Francisco about 15 years ago. The dealer restores antiques and specializes in modifying beds for modern mattresses' I do not remember the provenance of this piece but I believe it was made in England in the 19th century. You can see it is very ornate without being over-the-top in wood carvings and frills. It is very stable. Though it creaks a little due to a small crack in one rail near where it meets the footboard. I've tried to show where the restorer extended the original rails to make the piece longer for a US queen size mattress. Our teenage son wants a more modern bed, having inherited this one from his Mom and Dad. We're not selling it with the mattress and box spring; just the wooden bed is being sold. I purchased this bed at an Illinois farmhouse estate sale about 20 years ago. Overall good condition for age; please see photos for detailed views. It is over 125 years. So do expect some wear. There is a small piece missing from decorative top piece and a minor stress crack on one of the side rails. Very solid, sturdy bed. For that discriminating home decorator who has everything but a beautiful Victorian Bedroom Suite! This set would be wonderful in a son or daughter's room and includes a beautiful large dresser and mirror. A second smaller, more petite dresser and mirror and finally a full size bed with mattress and box springs and a special memory foam topper, which for me makes this set over the top comfortable. This bedroom suite was made"sometime" in the 1800's, extremely difficult to pin down the exact date. My good friend says the wood used in this furniture has a particularly pleasing warm golden brown tone, unlike today's imitation wood furniture. This is without question the real stuff, and the good thing is, this furniture will last another five generations. Finally, one of the really remarkable advantages of this group has ... moreto be the"extreme" heavy marble tops. For me, marble is one of the best dresser tops possible, literally"everything" proof, yes they are heavy, but easily removed, and they slide right back into place. Unlike the cheap imitations of today, this is almost one inch thick marble, the real stuff! I am including lots of pictures where you can see just how inviting this bedroom suite is, hope you like it as much as I have. Please note, in some of my pictures, the Sun was so extremely bright, it makes the pieces look much lighter, they are not light" they are very rich and dark, and you can see that on most of the pictures, just a quick heads up on that. It is very old, and the iron is aged. When I purchased it I didn't even know there was brass detail, with just a little work it started to shine up. The headboard is 64.75 inches high, footboard is 43.5 inches high; length is 72 inches, width- from outermost edges of headboard and footboard- is 53.75 inches. All original headboard, footboard and side rails have been sandblasted and refinished in pale moss green; some chips in paint but no damage to bed. Adapted to hold wooden slats to support full-sized mattress; can also be used around floor-standing mattress and box spring. It is located in Santa Cruz. California, and is for pick-up only. It includes headboard, footboard and two rails. The mattress set is not included. This antique French bed has been in our family for 24 years. It is approximately 79" long. 52" wide. As it is European, it is about three inches narrower than a standard American double bed. An American box spring or platform will not fit down inside the frame. Rather, the slats are arranged on top of the frame and the mattress just sits on top of the slats. The mattress hangs over about 1 1/2" on each side, which is no problem. We have used it every day for 24 years and it is quite sturdy( ... morealthough.ahem. we have only had a single sleeper in this bed so we cannot testify to its accommodating more than one! When we purchased it. Antique 1800s Bowfront Shaving Mirror w/ Two Dovetailed Drawers
For auction is a great old antique 1800s bowfront shaving mirror with two dovetailed drawer. The drawers have beaded trim on the fronts and the dovetails are hand cut. The wood appears to be rosewood veneer. It is in excellent condition except for one small ding to the lower right of the right drawer. Also. There is one small diamond shaped repair to the veneer of the top surface that can be seen in the third picture. This repair was done many years ago and it was expertly completed. The oval mirror needs to be resilvered or outright replaced. This would not be difficult as there is a solid pine board on the back of the mirror that holds the mirror in place. The stand it very sturdy with no damage other than the small missing piece of veneer. It is 16 1/2" long and 8" deep at the center. The cabine surface is 5 1/8" high. Fabulous. Decorative, Antique Iron Bed. Back when this bed was handmade, there existed"double bed mattress size" In the current day, a full size box spring and mattress fit it beautifully. In fact, for just an additional $50.00, I am offering the quality box spring and mattress set I used for just two years. I found that rather than using the cross slats, it was better to screw the box spring to the outer rails. Please see photos. I am moving and had much in this particular room today. Thus. Lovely. Lovely, antique French fligree white cast iron full-size bed, in swirls and curls. Double hearts amidst what appear to be iron horns of plenty, flowers and fish finials. Headboard is 61" tall to tip of finial; footboard is 44" tall to tip. The decades-old paint on this bed is delicately distressed for its age. All on this bed is in working order. A tiny metal castor(original) is attached to the bottom of each of the four legs making it easy to transport. The side rails slip in effortlessly and fit perfectly. Priced at $1035.00. It measures 16 1/4" x 8 1/8" x 8" and is in great over all condition. It comes with the bedding. I do not know for sure what the wood is and the bottom may not be of the same kind of wood, but, the top part looks like walnut to me- not sure. It is a sweet bed! Antique Oak Daybed Day Bed Nursery Bed with Mattress
I am moving back to Europe and unfortunately cannot take this Day bed back with me. I purchased this item in London at auction in February 10th. 2001 for 400 pounds sterling and I had it shipped to the US with a lot of other furniture that I purchased. The auctioneers estimate was actually 400- 600 pounds, so I got a great deal on it. Including the auction commission/ freight. In current dollars, my cost was approx. $900 for this item. As I am leaving. I am looking to recover a lot less than this- great deal for you! The bed is from between 1850- 1890 and is French. As a daybed. The bed is intended to be pushed against a wall, and has a front, and two sides, but no back of the bed. We used the bed in our nursery for our twins. And it was perfect. The bed comes with a custom made mattress that I had made in New Jersey. You can sleep on the ... morebed(our nanny did for 2 years) While the bed is solid. The carvings and workwork have to be handled with great care, and we have had to put some extra nails in to secure it. If you are looking for a central piece for a nursery. This is it! As a daybed. It is small. The bed measures corner to corner 53 inches by 80 inches. The mattress measures 45 inches by 72 inches. The top and bottom of bed measure 42 inches high. The bed is comprised of two sides and a carved front. And a low back. It is simple to build and take apart- but once apart the front particular is very fragile. This is where damage can be done. Early 1800's Child's Bed Frame
This early 1800's child's bed is from a Bellevue Estate I bought it at the Auction. It is a wonderful bed frame, Only the head and foot board- the bed has one partial spindle which I showed in the photo broken and one chunk out of the under side that doesnt really show but it does need some glue or restoration if you want it for show otherwise it looks fine and as it should for being about 200 years old.
