Victorian Mahogany and Rosewood Half Tester Bed
The bed is all original.The padded upholstered canopy needs redoing. It was left so the pattern could be used to reproduce new canopy. The assembled bed is taller than avg ceiling hgt. I have custom made pieces that convert the head board end to 8ft. So the bed can be used in most any room. The bed was made in France and either shipped in at Charleston or New Orleans and went directly to a large estate home way out East Blvd in Charlotte NC. in 1878. A Dr had purchased the bed and it was placed in the East Blvd home. It stayed there until the 1940's when it was moved to the families' home on the Catawba River. and stayed there until 1956 when it was given as a gift to my Aunt. It is a half Tester Bed with full figured carved Owls on the posts of the Footboard. These were carved from one piece of wood. The center Panel on the Bed has a huge carved Face. there are panels with brass inlay on either side as well as four across the headboard. The Half Tester is carved all the way around and is supported by twisted columns that come off the rails. Also supported by arched corbels in between. Walnut / Rosewood Half Tester Bed
Recently acquired from an old southern estate. This lovely half tester bed appears to be made of walnut& rosewood. In the 1800's rosewood was highly sought after and quite expensive. Rosewood has a stunning vibrant grain but is also a very soft wood. For these reasons stronger and less expensive woods, like walnut& mahogany, were used in combination with rosewood solids and veneers. In this particular case it appears that walnut was used and then rosewood graining was hand applied to give the appears of an entirely rosewood bed. Elegant, antique Victorian half tester bed
This two toned.Elegantly carved, full bed has a wonderful patina. The fabric canopy was done in 1992 in a beautiful rose colored satin and is in overall excellent shape. The bed was purchased in 1982 at an estate auction in Georgetown, KY, just outside of Lexington, KY. This bed would be lovely for a girl's room or in a house of comparable antiques. The dimensions are(w)62 x(l)80 x(h)96" The bed breaks down into the side rails. Canopy frame, head and baseboard. The bed is in excellent condition considering the age of this piece. There is an approximately 1" chip in the poster which is pictured. It is hard to see because is high up. The top of the bed rails have some dents that may be covered by the bedspread but they are not really noticeable. Most irregularities are seen only in a certain light and on close inspection. Large victorian bed. I believe it is a Double. That has about 8 pieces. The two side pieces slide in but it seems to have had another little piece on each side. The top is all carved and this has another top piece that goes along with it, carved also may for a mirror or other bedroom piece. Not sure of the wood, but darker in color. Stands about 9 ft tall. I can crate up and ready for shipping. I use Kingdom Global Logistics and we have found them reasonable and reliable. For sale today is an Antique Half Tester Bed. This bed was purchased 40+ years ago from a dealer who found it in New Orleans and brought it to Missouri. It may have been restored at some point in its past. But it would have been many years ago. Its believed to be mostly walnut, and is extremely well built and very sturdy. The half tester style features a half canopy over the bed which hangs by chains from the ceiling. Because of the height, a 9 ft. or taller ceiling would be ideal to showcase this wonderful bed. It dates from around 1860 it has a half canopy over the head end, this has a sunburst fabric panel inset, with large hanging teardrop turnings to the front. The foot board of the bed is made in solid Flame mahogany. It has a pleasantly curved shape to the top with barley twist bed posts at either side. The Bed has been recently restored.
