In the summer it could be removed so the occupants could get a little breeze, if there was any. In the winter it would be put back on to stop the drafts. This bed has a shaped crest rail of gorgeous crotch mahogany, underneath the crest are three inset panels topped with Gothic style arches and half drop finials. Their are a couple of chips of missing mahogany on the headboard~see picture.The bed which was originally roped and still has the knobs. The solid cherry post are topped with flame finials. The measurements are 83 inches tall at post, 71 inches tall at headboard, 58 inches wide and 79 inches long. The mattress area is 72 inches long, and 51 inches wide. The weight is approximately 100 lbs. This is a great bed the crotch mahogany is just outstanding. This bed would add WOW factor to any bedroom. It is sturdy and ready to take its place in your home. This full sized period bed comes to us out of an intact early 19th Century Rhode Island Estate. Coming by an original intact rope bed is a rarity in itself. When we got the bed it was being used with a plywood bunky board as a foundation instead of rope. These were designed to be used with a thick horse hair mattress that sat a top the ropes. If you are doing a true correct historical preservation of the period this is correct bed. We have recently seen custom bedding made from thick memory foam bedding. This early 19th century bed has a commanding presence with is four tall massive octagon shaped bed posts of solid mahogany. The head-board features a shaped carved crest of crotch mahogany with a recess panel of crotch mahogany at the center. This fine bed bolts together very tight and sturdy. The only apology I can find for this nearly 200 year old bed would be a small chip on the inside of one of the posts near the top(see last pic) and the inset panel of the head-board has a slight age shrinkage crack neither of which is very noticeable unless very close inspection and not an issue of the sturdiness of the bed. AMAZING 1800's Mahogany Empire Rope Sacking Sleigh Bed Canvas Bedding Civil War
This item is totally outside of our norm so bare with us. We purchased this unique bed at a local thrift store here in Southwest Virginia. Zip 24073. This area has a rich history of Civil War battle sites& estates. We don't know the history of this item but from what we find it is dates the early 1800's. It's either a full or 3/4 size bed. I measured the headboard& its abt. 58" wide on outside& abt. 51" wide on the inside of the legs. When assembled you would tighten/turn the 4 posts that are attached to the canvas sail/sacking bedding. The metal gears/teeth would catch in the grooves to keep the bed tight. This is where the sayings"Sleep tight" Hit the sack" originate. Your bedding/mattress would go on top. Heard some people use a futon mattress on these! There is another bed like this on ... moreebay which is in better condition($2000) but does not come with the vintage canvas sacking bottom or metal hardware(RARE) From what we can make out the canvas sail material has been printed"Portland ME" and some numbers. Not sure of the meaning of this. We have more photos available if you are interested. We are not antique collectors but do know this is a rare piece of history that should go in a museum. We can't use at our house& would love for this to find an appreciative home. When looking at pics of others its missing a slat in head board& foot board. This is a very rare solid mahogany rope sleigh bed dating to the mid 19th century. This wonderful high end piece of furniture is stamped A&D 71 on one of the rails of the head or foot board. This piece is in excellent original condition. The cloth attaching the side rails is not in the best of shape, it is torn. This was a high end bed, it features a ratcheting system to enable the use to tighten the ropes as the stretched over time! I have heard of people using a thick memory foam mattress or a pillow top mattress on these rope beds. This is either a full or 3/4 size bed. You just don't see these everyday. This is a beautiful C 1840 rope doll bed or salesman sample. It has a ticking covered mattress and is in excellent condition. The rope could be tightened a bit but other than that I see no flaws. This was found at a doll collectors estate. Measures 17"L X 9"H. This size of bed is very difficult to find. It is perfect for antique bisque or composition babies.

SUPERB ANTIQUE MAHOGANY RUSSIAN EMPIRE BED
This is a superb mahogany Russian empire bed. To the head board,foot board and side rails as you can see it has all the original ormalu which is in very good condition. To the headboard there are some age cracks but look fine. I would say this was made possibly for an exhibition in the early 1800s because of the quality of the bed. Although there is no signature. The bed measures under 10 feet tall and fits a full mattress. If needed I have the original porcelain casters. I have never put the cloth teaster inside the teaster but could easily be made. The very large headboard measures about 5 feet tall(60" high) The foot board measures over 3 feet tall(40" high) The outside measurements from Cap to Cap at the top are 89" head to toe x 58" side to side. This is a massive statement piece structure that will command any room, large or small. I had it set up in a small wood-lined guest cottage on my property in the Upper Catskill Region of New York State, with other large, weighty masculine pieces of furniture, ... moreand it set the tone for the entire décor, making it a very luxe little environment to camp out in!
