1870 8 ft. Walnut and Burl FULL BED American Renaissance revival
This original antique is American Renaissance revival walnut and burl veneer bed with carved arch. This is a rare and wonderful piece of woodworking. The ornate pediment on top piece is carved in Rococo. The design mode is called Victorian but in realism is the revival of Louis SV and began in England in 1850. This is such a perfect and early example of revival that it very well may be from the Philadelphia school of Querville or Henkels. American cabinetmakers. Condition of the piece is very good supporting the original finish that has mellowed to a satin patina in it's 120 plus years. This is a sole remaining piece of a bedroom set which more than likely makes this irreplaceable. All Information I have gotten from an appraisel catalog done on these items back in 1997. We believe this grand bed to have its original finish and features bountiful detailed carvings with a beautiful carved crest. Huge turned walnut finials that adorn the shoulders of the head-board and large carved rosettes, and oversized roundels and recessed burl walnut panels accent the entire bed. This bed has beautifully executed side rails and when the bed is bolted together its very tight and sturdy. There is a signature on the inside ledge of the footboard but I cannot make out the name. This elaborate 19th century bed is in wonderful antique condition and has a striking presence. The Massive and Phenomenal Headboard Crown consists of an ornate carved spade shell and scroll configuration with stylized incised cross trefoil crest. Accented on each side with elongated fluted foliate carvings along with a plethora of carved floral rosette roundels, intricately turned finials and dimensional incised carved details. These whimsical incised carved details include a bluebird of happiness located in the center of the burled hood that is flanked on each side with raised rectilinear foliate carvings. You will notice that the special scalloped burl ornamentation beneath the bluebird of happiness is adorned on the left side with an incised carved man in the moon along with the north-star shining down on a little frog in some bull-rushes and flowers while the right side is adorned with an incised carved goose flying away from the heat of the incised carved sun-rays.
