Beautifully turned stiles with shaped finials on all posts. The Bed measures 19 wide. 23 high and the Bed is approximately 33 inches long. Great patina, some age related wear but displays well. The rope bed was in bedrooms from the 16th century until the late 1800s when the first coil spring mattress was constructed. The history of the rope bed is tightly woven with the history of the mattress and the four-poster bed. Most of the four-poster beds were rope beds. Ropes or strips of leather were laced across the bed frame to support the mattress. Sleepers needed to tighten the ropes frequently to ensure firmer support and a better night's sleep. Rails are very heavy, super tall, just a super looking piece. You can see from teh back of the headboard, it is hand chamferred. I believe it is solid walnut, but may be oak. accomodates a standard full size mattress. Includes Head, Foot, rails, and slats. Slats are new wood slats. I am located in Birmingham. AL. Early American Antique Spool Bed w/ Bed Bolts, Walnut & Ash
Antique Spool Bed*Loaded with clues. But uncertain of age. Researched and found that this type of bed existed in early colonial days*I have incessantly been trying to determine if this could be one of those extremely rare 17th century colonial beds and deserves to be in a museum. But it isn't conclusive. I saw pictures of one that looked similar in a Spanish colonial museum. Write to me proofs that I am wrong, asking for more photos if necessary. I'd like to error towards the favorable value. Maybe it is listed at an outlandish price currently, maybe it's way too low. So, appraisers out there, let me know what is true. Clues include: 1. Unevenly spaced spools(Done by hand) 2. Thick Ash Lower Frame 3. Walnut Upper Frame 4. Originally Rope Bed: later modified by sawing off knobs& hueing out places for wood slats 5. Shrinkage ... moreof Wood(see photos) 6. Large Mortise& Tenon Construction 7. Sawn off feet& caster wheels added(Likely due to once being on dirt floor) 8. Seemingly. Originally made without bed bolts(hewn out top of mortise with added material in bottom of mortise. However, the location of the holes for the bolts line up perfectly. The only other possibility is that the wood shrank and somehow shifted the hole upwards. 9. Age of bed bolts unidentified. But hand-forged on at least the head area. Can anyone ID age of these? 10. These matching twin beds were part of an southern estate find we recently ran across. They were purchased in 1930 per the family account from a company that was founded in 1929 in Nashville. Tennessee known as Wheeler Furniture. They were brought back to the lower state of SC and used there until their move to Spartanburg, SC in 1975. They were placed in storage in 1980 and have been there for over 34 years until we pulled them out a few weeks ago. Antique African American Negro Slave Bed Post Civil War late 1800`s
This is called a slave bed because it is common for the type actually made by slaves in the south pre Civil War. A rope strings back and forth over the pegs to hold a mattress. This however was made after the Civil War on a working plantation outside of Baton Rouge. LA. late 1800`s by very possibly former slaves. It was given to me in my youth in the 60`s by Ms. Lewis in Ocean Springs who lost a small apartment complex on the beach in Hurricane Camile, 1969. Its just dusty and needs a good clean up. One curly-cue-thingy is broke off but I have it for repair. All sales final. No returns, pick up only in Ocean Springs, Ms.
