$10.00 Shipping Location: Fort Collins, United States Here is a nice brown crockery lid for a bean pot. The lid measures about 6 inches across and is one early and unique lid. Let me start out by saying that ... morethis lid is in near perfect condition. What looks like chips in the photos are actually notches that were made into the lid. Look closely and you will notice that the notches are almost equidistant from each other and are almost identical in size. The brown glaze is in the notches themselves so they were not added afterwards. The only chip in this lid is a small flake on the underside near one of those notches. It does not show from above. I have had a couple dealers examine this and they were stumped as well on the reason for the notches. They surmised that it would be for ventilation. But venting what was the mystery. It is rather small for a sauerkraut or pickling crock unless you are making small batches. To further the mystery was the fact that the underside of the lid was not glazed. There is a spot where the glaze ran some to the underneath which I show in one of the photos. One dealer believed that this lid may have been hand molded as there are what looks like finger imprints and a finger nail imprint on the inside of the underneath lip/rim. This rim measures about 3 7/8 inches across. I can place my thumb nail in that nail indentation perfectly and it balances on my thumb nail in a way so that you could brush on the glaze with your other hand. This way no finger prints would be made on the top glaze. Also, if you look at the side view photos you will see a slight wavering to the lid. I am assuming that the thin outer rim sagged a bit while drying or firing. You just do not run into lids like this in this condition very often. If you have any early primitive brown bean crocks in your collections that need lids this would be a great replacement for them. If you have any other questions let me know. Slight underglaze darkening but glaze beautiful. gorgeous loop hangle with thumbrest. Lid immaculate. Hinge immaculate. Original gold lines on rails bordering collar almost completely cleaned off but an easy restoration. Magnificent the way it is. There seems to be the slightest rub of the lid on the backside shoulder edge and a nick. Perhaps but otherwise, near museum quality to me. The glaze on the top edge of the tankard looks poured on. Image 12 shows the depth of the glaze and crackling depth. Polychromic Hand colored transfer of a stylized water bird resembling a Great Blue Heron wading in flowered wetlands decorating each side of syrup body has great color and is in beautiful condition. Interesting thumb lever appears to be styled or formed as the back of a book and is serrated in a chevron on the thumb side for a sure grip while pouring. Stands 6 1/2" to the top edge of the slim tankard. And 8" to the finial on beautiful conical lid. Handsome slim tankard form with beautiful classic loop handle with great thumbrest. You will not find many of these around in this condition. Stamped"BENNETT'S/ JAN 23. 1873/ PATENT" I would be interested in the patented feature or innovation represented by that patent. Antique Stoneware, Salt-Glazed Brown Crock, Catawba Valley, Carolina Primitive
Exceptional quality. Small alkaline or salt glazed, primitive antique crock. 6 1/4 inches high, about 3 inch top diameter, about 4 1/4 inch bottom diameter. Looks to be just under 5 inches around(diameter) in the middle. Nice luster, looks different in every kind of light. Glaze is nicely variegated- study photos to get the feel and look of this relatively heavy piece(for its size) Does not appear to be missing a lid- the way the opening was made, I do not believe this ever had a lid, at least not a ceramic one that would have been incorporated into the clay design when the piece was hand thrown. Looks like this crock could originate from the Catawba Valley Pottery, but just my opinion. Glaze& form reminds me a little bit of Pewabic Pottery pieces, but not iridescent. Not much wear given its age- glaze has rubbed off in a few small spots ... morearound the rim(see photo) but no serious chips or cracks. Bottom is unmarked. All sales are final- no returns. ANTIQUE PENNSYLVANIA REDWARE TURKS HEAD MOLD This very nice Turks Head redware cake mold is one of two that was removed from a Central Pennsylvania estate near Troxelville. It measures 8-1/2" in diameter x 2-1/2' tall. The mold features a capped center chimney and a pumpkin color that has good contrast against the darker manganese interior decoration. The mold remains in very good condition for its age just showing normal wear especially on the bottom. It has surface only hairlines and old flea bite size nicks on the top rim. Old Antique Primitive Canning Crock Jar Stoneware Salt Glaze Crazing
HELLO and thanks for looking at our auction! Today we have an old antique crock that we think may have been a canning crock many years ago. It looks like a date on the bottom but we can't quite make it out but we have taken pictures of it. It has lots of flaws and chips around the top and lots of staining and crazing. There is also a hairline crack in the top and we have tried to show it in the pictures. This old crock measures 6 1/2" tall and 5 1/2" across the bottom and 4 1/4" across the top. The rim is 1/2" thick around the top and it is very heavy. It weighs 3 1/2 pounds. It is missing the bale but the holes for the bale are still intact. It is also missing the lid. This old Crock is still very pretty even with all the chips. Stains and flaws. It has lots of crazing all over the outside and inside, and would look ... moregood with the old primitives collection. VTG 1910s 1920s Primitive Salt Glazed Stoneware Crock Bucket Cincinnati Ohio
Very interesting salt glazed heavy bucket. Found at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati. Ohio when working on recent renovations. This bucket was black with oil and dust. It was found in the mechanical room where it was used to refill the oilers. It took some doing, but we were able to cut the grime. As you can see, the bucket is in fantastic condition. We estimate its age to be 1910s/1920s era or possibly earlier(the theatre was built in the early 20s and this bucket has been there since that time) The edge has a small lip that comes off of it. There is a tight crack along one side which is typical of this type of crockery. Also some glaze slips- also typical. No maker's marks on the piece. Very nice primitive item. Up for bids is this wonderful antique primitive two gallon stoneware pottery churn crock with two great looking applied handles. It stands 14" tall. 5 1/4" wide at mouth, 6 3/4" at base, and approx. 8" at its widest point. I do not know the age but I believe it is quite early. It does have a pretty long hair line crack that runs from the mid-upper body to the bottom of the base as shown in the pictures. I have had this piece in my personal collection for years and have not been able to identify it. Any experts out there are welcome and encouraged to comment on this piece. This is a stoneware jug or flask. It is made with gray colored clay with a Bennington type glaze. It is defiantly handmade. It appears to have a base that the top was applied on to. The neck is very thin. The inside hole is only about the size of a pencil. The opening is approximately 1.5” on one side and the other side is crimped in measuring about 1” It has two applied handles. It has coggle lines. Two on one side and three on the other as it looks like they got off track with the coggle. This piece has many imperfections that were ... morea part of the making process. There are bumps. Antique Glazed Primitive Stoneware Gallon Churn/Crock - 1800's Vineyard Home
Offered for your bidding consideration is a stoneware churn found in the basement of a home located in Stockton. California. The original home was built some time in the second half of the 19th century. It shows up on an old 1877 city map. It was situated on an early California grape vineyard. The original home was destroyed or demolished some time around 1900. Another home was built on the property to replace it. The owner(s) continued the vineyard for decades. Now nothing is left but the 2nd house and barn. This churn has all the right stuff going for it. Period craftsmanship, correct material, correct look, etc. I found others like it but they were severely damaged. What you are viewing is an original antique 3-4 gallon(I Think) Stoneware crock with applied handles and a wonderful blue bee sting decoration on the front. Piece is in great shape for its age with some wear and aging to contend with as well as one 6in crack starting from the top. Piece has nice clean handles and crack is in the back of the piece so it won't detract much in display. Piece measures 9in X 8 3/4in X 13 3/4in and is a nice displayable size but once again, I am not sure about the gallon size. Ruckel's Stone Ware 2 Gallon Crock Up for your perusal is this antique Ruckel's Stoneware 2 gallon crock. It has a white glaze and stamped in cobalt blue'Ruckel's Stoneware' mark and'2' for 2 gallon size. Established in 1870 in White Hall Illinois. Ruckel's Pottery was popular at the end of the 1800s and into the early part of the 1900s. It is in great condition and very clean. It measures 9.5" tall and 9.5" in diameter. No glaze pops but there are a few chips on the bottom and a crack on the outer top(see pics) Normal wear from use. Age and storage. Found at an estate sale. This is a beautiful crock and rare to find. It shows it's age and is probably close to 100 years old or more. Not too many of these out there. Perfect for any crock or antique collector. It has a rich, dark brown glossy glaze with a silvery/green iridescence. The 1st and 2nd photos are the closest in color to the actual. The shot of the interior is not as dark as my photo. It is not marked. Size: 7 1/8"d X 5"h- approx. dimensions Quantity: 1- Crock Condition: VERY GOOD- no cracks but there are couple. Shallow chips on the top lip. One is just inside the lip, and the other is on the outside. Neither are bad(1/4"d) and they just add to it's primitive appeal. There are many tiny scratches in both the exterior and interior from years of use. The glaze is fabulous and there are bubbles, glaze pops, skipped glaze, and flakes- all factory flaws. There is fine ... morecrazing all over. It is one of the nicest, rustic crocks I've had in a long time.much nicer than my photos show. I always pack items carefully and am happy to combine shipping.
