A rare 6-Gallon Salt-Glazed Crock from Upstate New York with monumental proportions; featuring an equally impressive Bird. Slip-trailed in very bold Cobalt. Lightly impressed below the rim: RIEDINGER& CAIRE, POUGHKEEPSIE, NY, with the capacity mark to the right. This stamp was used by Philip Riedinger and Adam Caire 1857-1878 in their well-respected Hudson Valley manufactory. These 6Gal. Birds are relatively scarce; their size and weight made them quite difficult to maneuver when full. This Crock, for example, would weigh nearly 70 lbs. with 24 quarts of liquid! Some imperfections to note: there are two hairlines that go through(one in front; one in back) The line on the lower front continues partially into the base(see close-up) this might lighten up with a good scrubbing. There are also some other"surface only" lines on the ... moreglaze surface. The rim has a two chips and some roughness; and there is glaze flaking near the left handle and the interior Albany Slip. This 2Gal. features an unmistakeable Poughkeepsie"Bird on Sprig" decoration, perfectly executed in very bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. The Semi-Ovoid form is quite rare, with very limited production numbers(especially those bearing Birds! The traditional, straight-sided crocks were much easier to make and stack in the kiln, and generally survived production without breakage. An unmarked Ovoid Crock or Storage Jar with approximate 1/2Gal. capacity. Likely New Jersey or New York City origin, early-1800's. Heavily decorated with Cobalt swags, scallops and handle accents. Parallel incised lines frame the body; also highlighted in Cobalt. Salt-Glazed with Open-Loop Handles in original condition without damage or repairs. The tooled lip flares outward slightly at the rim. A well-made piece with wonderful overall form and highly-desirable size. The jug measures 11 1/2" high and a diameter of 7 1/2" at the bottom rim. The handled jug is decorated on the front with a lovely flower form in dark. Rich, cobalt blue. The jug is marked on the top with an impressed mark that reads" SATTERLEE& MORY. FT. EDWARD, NY. Clear, distinguishable marking, The manufacture of stoneware was a major industry in Fort Edward beginning in 1858. George Satterlee opened the Fort Edward Pottery Company. In 1859. A very fine 3Gal. Storage Crock or Jar from Fort Edward NY. Ca.1870. The impressed stamp on the shoulder is Cobalt-Washed and reads: Haxstun, Ottman& Co. Fort Edward NY and a number 3 representing 3 gallons.This is the mark used from 1867-1872. The decoration. A prolific Cobalt Floral Bouquet, covers the entire front of the piece. It is very bold, impressive and will not disappoint. Cobalt Blue Floral Design- Measures approx. 13 1/2 inches diameter at top and 13 1/4 inches bottom. Height is 12 1/2 inches and weight is approx. 20 lbs. Rare stamped 2 gallon"Riedinger& Caire Poughkeepsie. NY" stoneware bird crock. This is from about 1855. The body of the crock is near perfect but it has 4 rim chips of various sizes with a tiny bit of rub on the lug handles. This storage jar has a thick heavy salt glaze. You don't find them like this very often with a beautiful cobalt blue bird setting on a branch.so the chips don't hurt it much. The crock is 11" tall.28" around and 8 1/4" on the base. This Crock is from the northeastern US. Probably upstate NY. It is in good condition for its age. A 2 is inscribed in the pottery usually signifying the gallon size. Although the crock is decorated with traditional early American motif there is no marking on the bottom or above the floral mark to tell us who the maker was. To me this makes the piece more rare and primitive, probably from the civil war era. Definitely from the NE. The crock measures about 12" tall and 6" opening.

Here is an antique stoneware butter churn with a large bird on the front. There is no wood pole. What is included is what you see in the photos. There are chips on the lid- one large one on the top of the brown glaze edge and some shallow flecks, the rest of it uneven areas appear to be under glaze and original to it. Also there is glaze loss on the handle. The churn itself has chips along the rim and some cracks, pretty much all above the level of the top of the ear handles. The body of the churn and base edge is fine. Measures about 17" tall and it is a bit over 7" across the opening, and at the widest point about 10" across. See photos for condition detail. Offering a fine example of early American pottery. An open stoneware crock. Or cream jar signed Webster& Bergen, North Bay, NY) I believe of c 1860 era. Decorated with cobalt on the applied lug handles, on the identifying stamp. Also, cobalt opposing seahorses, as well as a seahorse stamp to the right of the identification. All very poorly applied. The jar measures 8 1/4" height and 8 3/4" outside diameter on the opening and 5 1/2" bottom diameter. I've included many images. Please check them closely. Overall in very fine antique condition showing some appropriate indication of age. Some bubble bursts from manufacture. Chips on the inner rim edge and several on the outer edge. Some well glazed over and others from use. Please check the images. Tight. Antique Whites Pottery Utica, NY Stoneware Cake Crock W/lid * Embossed Scene
This 19th century stoneware cake crock was made by the Whites Pottery of Utica. NY. It has an embossed hunting scene which goes completely around the crock and has 3 deer or stags on then lid as well. The crock measures 7 inches in diameter and is 5 1/4 inches to the top of the lid. It will display nicely. The cobalt is a rich deep blue with no fry to the glaze. The crock has only one very, very slight hairline to the right and above the kneeling hunter. see photo) There are no chips, cracks or repairs. A similar piece is shown in the book The Blue and the Gray: Oneida County Stoneware by Christopher Bench. Plate# 12 on page 25. Large antique 19th c blue decorated stoneware jug crock ovoid bees NY 16.25"
A large antique blue decorated ovoid stoneware jug with bee decoration which we believe dates to the 19th century. The handle is big and thick and doesn't look like it's ever been broken off or cracked. Lots of heavy patina in the area of the handle and the top. The crock measures approximately 16-1/4" tall. Condition issues include five surface chips. The largest of which is on the front, just left of center near the top and measures approximately 1-1/2" by 1-3/8" Other surface chips appear on the front bottom(about 1-1/4" in width and 3/4" in width) and on the back about mid-way down(1" and 1/2" There are also five smaller chips to the very bottom edge of the piece, the largest of which measures approximately 1-1/8" in width. It is difficult to see because of the dark color of the jug, but ... morehere is a tight hairline which begins at the top and extends downward about 3-1/4" There are also some small holes. most notably two toward the bottom left of center on the side. There are also a couple areas of heavy wear to the glaze, and the typical tiny glaze skips and other minor imperfections. The bottom of the jug is covered in green felt(therefore we cannot speak to any hairlines which may be on the bottom) and there is a cork in the top with the top broken off- we acquired it this way and have not tried to get it out. There is even something inside the crock- it sounds like a marble but we will never know! We do not know the maker or region of origin, but it seems like a New York piece to us. While it could be restored, the appeal of this piece is largely the sheer size, shape, and the blue decoration, which is in a very nice state of repair. The surface chips are noticeable, and other issues mentioned only for accuracy; this piece still displays very well and has lots of character! Please view the images for condition details. 1850-1899 J.Fisher&Co Lyons NY Antique Stoneware Crocks 12 inch and 10 inch
NOTE: There is a hairline crack and a small chip on each piece(see photos) The smaller crock has NO markings of J.Fisher and Co. The weight of the larger crock is 19 lbs and the smaller is 9 lbs. With shipping materials the combined weight will be quite expensive to ship probably $50+ so take that into consideration when bidding. HISTORY: Jacob Fisher immigrated from Germany in 1853 and married the daughter of John Burger Sr. who was operating the Rochester branch at the time. Fisher had worked for Burger at the Rochester branch since 1863. Fisher teamed up with George Lang. Who was also a son-in-law of John Burger and was one of Burger’s partners in Rochester from 1871 to 1876. Even though George Lang was Fisher’s partner in the Lyons Pottery, Lang continued to reside in Rochester. During these years at the Lyons and Rochester Potteries, ... moreit was evident there were close family and employee relations. In 1878, Jacob Fisher bought the Lyons Pottery outright from Lang. Fisher’s daughter(Louise) and son assisted with the business affairs. It was during this time period that the business flourished like never before. Jacob Fisher had 2 of his own canal boats used to bring in clay from NJ and Long Island and Albany. These boats also delivered finished wares all along the canal. Wares were also distributed all over the northern counties of NYS bordering Lake Ontario from Syracuse to Buffalo by horse drawn wagons. The pottery grew in size and production during this time. Hundreds of pieces of stoneware could be seen stacked on the docks of the canal awaiting shipment. It was at this time that approximately 18 potters were spinning their wares. By 1896 the Fisher Pottery was the largest in the state. Around 1902, Jacob Fisher retired and decided to close the pottery because of increased competition from molded clay vessels being manufactured and distributed from Ohio. The crocks and jugs being mass produced in Ohio were attractive, cheaper, and could be produced 10 times faster than the hand made potters could produce

Antique Blue Decorated Troy, NY Pottery Stoneware Crock
Up for auction is a nice 2 gallon Troy. NY Pottery stoneware jar with a beautiful blue flower. The jar stands 12 inches tall. The jar has some hairlines, stone pings and small chips to one handle as seen in the pictures. It also has some staining, but it is a nice jar just the same.
