NO CRACKS, ONE 1/8" CHIP NEAR RIM, NO CRAZING THE FOLLOWING IS AN EMAIL RECIEVED FROM A FELLOW EBAYER: This crock was made by Sherwood Brothers pottery in New Brighton PA between the late 1890's- through the 1930's. They were referred to as packing jars. Commonly used for olives. The jar would have had a wire/wood bail handle attached to the two ears on the jar. It would have had a clear glass lid held in place by a rod through two off the three holes in the lip. The third hole, slighty lower in the lip, is a drain for fluid duing the filling/sealing process. They came in two sizes and solid brown, like yours and two tone, brown and tan.

Hello. You are viewing my sale for a Vintage Stoneware Pottery Crock With the Lid. This is a Beehive Designed and Shaped Crock. It is Signed On The Bottom however I cannot make out the artists name. This pottery has a smooth glaze finish to it that is brown in color. This crock weighs 5.2 pounds and measures 11" tall by 30" around at the fattest section. The mouth opening is 3 and 1/2" across. This pottery piece has some minor wear however there are no breaks, chips, or repairs present. Please view all my photographs for further details. Please note all sales are final. Antique Stoneware Crock LID ONLY w/Button Handle Brown Glaze Ribbed 3,4,5 Gal
Pleased to offer this beauty of a crock lid. I am not sure which crock maker produced this. It has a wonderful button handle with decorative embossing on it and ribbed pattern around it. Nice brown glaze center on top and interior. Clay exposed on top appears yellow. Embossed with a"3" 3 Gal) but it would possibly work on a 4 or even 5 gallon crock. I had it on a 5 gal and it covered opening. Just didn't extend to outside edge. Check measurements for your crock. PLEASE NOTE: The brown glaze had a white film on it in places(almost like salt or tainted water got on it) I cleaned and applied Linseed oil(not greasy) which restored it's beauty. In the future it may require a re-treatment of oil or polish. The factory started pottery production in 1902 and continued production until 1979. This lovely crock is one of the earlier pieces from this company and has some staining and wear in accordance with age and use. This crock comes with its original lid.

Except for the raised band which is unglazed. I think this is for a Robinson Ransbottom 5 gallon crock, although if the inner rim fits, it could go on any crock. Dimensions: 12” across. 9 ¾” part that inserts into the crock) 1” rim extends from part that inserts. Condition: It is in very good used condition with no cracks or major chips.
