This sale is for an old 19th century country crock. As seen below. This crock is in poor condition, due to cracks and chips. There is a metal band around this crock, tightened with a cut nail. I have owned this crock and used it for decoration for over 35 years and the band was there when I bought it, which should show the strength and durability of the nice looking crock. ANTIQUE 19THC ENGLISH STONEWARE LUSTRE GLAZED STONEWARE POTTERY CROCK JAR JUG
WHAT A CROCK OF. Gooseberry Preserves. Lemon Curd, or perhaps Clotted Cream, Dear Collectors, this is a genuine 19th c antique English lustre glazed Preserve Stoneware Crock Jar peculiar to those made across the big pond for food preservation of yesteryear in the British Isles. Every respectable farmstead would sport several in the kitchen and buttery/pantry for daily use and storage of preserved foodstuffs well before the days of modern refrigeration made these charming sturdy stoneware vessels outmoded and relegated to collector status. Quite similar to American Albany slip brown glaze. The exterior of crock is covered lavishly in pearl brown lustre wash glaze giving it a soft lustre reflective pearl shine with life that dances off the surface at all angles. It features twin lug handles at upper side to aid gripping crock during cooking ... morewith a decorative stamped incised single beaded ring running around the upper middle kissing lower handle extensions. It has a most gentle chamfered base bevel, then the bottom is simply unglazed stoneware clay patina. A thick well formed rim likely once had a lid no longer present, but no matter, clean sage gray green glazed interior is happy to hold your wooden spoons and kitchen utensils in period style. Overall it has a tall, slight flared upright shape like a fine pail with great dignity and usefulness to industrious housekeeper.remember Mrs. Bridges from Upstairs, Downstairs? Hudson would approve and no doubt Downton Abbey has a few on display as well. It stands 6.25" tall and 5.75" across open top. I would guestimate, holds about a quart liquid capacity overall. SMALL BROWN GLAZED CROCK JAR POTTERY STONEWARE 1860 VIRGINIA WEST INCISED RING
Here is a MOST INTERESTING OLD CROCK from WEST VIRGINIA OR VIRGINIA I THINK. I know that it is old. Probably pre CIVIL WAR around 1860- It has a an INCISED RING down to about the middle that sets it apart from most others of its type. It is small, even diminutive, measuring just 6 1/4 inches in height, 4 inches across the top and 4 1/4 inches across the base. The bare clay on the base indicates that it is REDWARE. Now the GOOD NEWS- It is in MINT- PERFECT CONDITION. I cannot find one thing wrong with it. For the age that is REMARKABLE. You will notice that one of the photos make the pot look like blue. That is where the sun was hitting it, a reflection. The interior shows the EXACT SAME BROWN GLAZE AS THE OUTSIDE DOES. GREAT LITTLE JAR. Buyer pays $8.00 domestic shipping and handling. The walls of this straight-sided round crock are 1/2" thick. The bottom and the top rim are unglazed. There is no marker’s mark to identify which pottery manufactured this stoneware crock. There were many potteries in the United States that made utilitarian salt glazed stoneware. It was not unusual. Early glazed stoneware pottery crock with cover and handle
Been in our barn for generations. I tried to research its manufacturer without much success. It is probably early 1900's. The piece is all light gray measuring 7 1/2" in diameter on the bottom. The jar tapers at the top to an outside diameter of 6 1/4" with a 4 1/2" opening. The 5" cover fits nicely. While examining the jar. I believe the base of the jar and tapered top were formed separately and joined while still green before firing. A turned wooden handle is connected to tabs formed on the jar with wire. It stands 7" high. There are 2 chips on the jar, one on the top rim and one on the outside of the base. There are no other cracks and the glaze does not show any crazing. We are clearing out our 4 generation house& barn. Offered here are two stoneware pottery butter or cheese crocks. each glazed in a deep rich brown finish inside and out(one slightly darker than the other) unfinished on the bottoms and underside of the lids. These crocks have working wire bale closures and each still has the original rubber ring in good condition to provide a nice airtight seal. This is a hard to find old marked salt-glazed stoneware crock that was made by J. Swank in Johnstown. Pennsylvania in the 1800's. It has a clear impressed mark" J. Swank& Co. Johnstown. Pa. 1" The"1" is the gallon size of this crock. It has fluted sides and bottom. The condition is very good to excellent with no cracks and no chips it has a little rough spot on the inner rim but not an actual chip. It measures 8" high and 8-1/4" in diameter at the widest part.

Gray outside. It is in good used condition, it has no major damage and no repairs. It has a few faint age cracks along the base but nothing deep or visible unless closely inspected. It doesn't seem to be marked anywhere but it came from an estate with a huge redwing collection. Cosmetically this crock is in very good condition considering its age and has a cobalt blue sting type design. This came from a high end estate in San Diego.Ca.
