Late 1800's salt glazed stoneware crock with cobalt decoration. This crock features 4 squiggly horizontal stripes. This crock stands approximately ... more10" in height. Is 6" in diameter at the base, and 6.25" in diameter at the rim. It came out of a north-central West Virginia estate(about 5-min from the PA boarder) so it could be easily be either a SW PA or WV piece. This crock is essentially as-made. But does have a few noteworthy firing defects. Most notably, there is a 3" glaze crack running from the edge if the base up into the lower left side of the decoration when viewed head-on. The crack does not go into the inside, and no evidence of moisture was present after leaving it full of water overnight. There is a 5mm glaze pop to the left side of the decoration, but I believe this to be a firing defect due to the presence of glaze around the edges of the defect. On the inside there is a surface line extending from the rim, but it does not go through to the front of the crock. You may notice what looks like cracks on the underside in the photo of the base. This is neither cracking nor crazing. It is a fluctuation in the natural color. Overall a great piece, and I'll be sad to see it go! This crock ships double boxed and insured via USPS or your preferred shipper. If you wish to change shipping preferences. Please contact me prior to purchase. Local pickup is always welcome. Western PA "T. F. Reppert" 1 Gallon "Successor" Churn from Greensboro, PA
This is an unusual western Pennsylvania 1 gallon churn. Notice how the"T. F. letters are a larger size than the letters in the"Reppert" name. What happened here is that this churn was manufactured in 1884 shortly after T. F. Reppert bought out his partner W. T. Williams. Instead of Reppert creating his own new stencil. He used the old"Williams& Reppert" stencil and cut out the"Williams" name from it. He then created a new stencil to insert"T. F. in front of the Reppert name. Why the letters were larger I don't know- perhaps he was in a hurry and had to do something quickly- or, he delegated it to one of his workers to remove"Williams" since it was now solely his company. It's obvious that the larger"T. F. was an"add-on" which makes this one of the very first pieces ... moreof stoneware that Reppert produced after buying out Williams. This really is a nice piece of stoneware history which reflects the buyout of Williams by Reppert in 1884. This churn is approx. 9.5" tall and 6.5" in diameter. It does have a 7/8" by 1/2" chip on the bottom edge(see pictures) A few minor nibbles on the inner rim, no cracks, and no repairs. Nice cobalt blue color. This is a great opportunity for all of you collectors to add a unique conversation piece to your collection. Money back if I inadvertently misrepresent the condition of the stoneware. Buyers pays return postage and churn must arrive in the same condition as when I shipped it. I pack carefully to insure crock arrives safely and I provide insurance. No reserve for this item.
