NO CRACKS, ONE 1/8" CHIP NEAR RIM, NO CRAZING THE FOLLOWING IS AN EMAIL RECIEVED FROM A FELLOW EBAYER: This crock was made by Sherwood Brothers pottery in New Brighton PA between the late 1890's- through the 1930's. They were referred to as packing jars. Commonly used for olives. The jar would have had a wire/wood bail handle attached to the two ears on the jar. It would have had a clear glass lid held in place by a rod through two off the three holes in the lip. The third hole, slighty lower in the lip, is a drain for fluid duing the filling/sealing process. They came in two sizes and solid brown, like yours and two tone, brown and tan.

For auction I have an antique brown Crock lid. The lid is almost perfect condition with no cracks but one small chip. Only on the inside. You may see other imperfections but there from the factory. I dont know what pottery company made this lid because I can't find any markings. Possibly a red wing, fort dodge or western. As far as what size it fits i cant tell you for sure im guessing 6 8 10 or 12gal. Best thing to do is measure your crock then look at where I have my tape measure laid out on the lid and see if you get a close match. Long as its close it will most likely work for you. This auction is for a wonderful old antique stoneware crock lid. It is approx.7" across the diameter and where the underside rim is would fit a 6" opening. It has a button knob in the center. There are some color variations in the glaze and some edge roughness on the outer rim( I think just from the molding process) There is a glaze pop on the bottom near the center. The wire bail and wooden handle are original to the crock. Roughly measures out to be just under 1-1/2 gallons(6-quarts) No manufacture's marks of any kind. Family providence tells me this crock was made in the late 1890's to 1920's. Measurements: 9" tall x base diameter 9" x top diameter hole 5-1/2" This crock has some fine overall crazing(inside and outside) But overall it is in very nice condition with no chips or cracks. What a great decorator piece for the kitchen or any room of your house. Use it to hold flowers. Kitchen utensils, magazines, newspapers. the possibilities are endless. The offering is for a Red Wing sponge band casserole with petal lid. The casserole measures 6 1/8 to 6 1/4 inches from handle to handle. Lid measures 4 7/8 inches. The casserole is in very fine condition. Considering its age, with only minor issues I show in my pictures. The casserole has a chip on the underside of a handle that I show in picture ten. Some minor staining on inside of casserole only. There are no chips or cracks on the inside. The petal lid measures 4 7/8 inches. Has number three indented on it, and two tiny chips. There are only a couple minor chips on the underside of the lid. The top has only some production bubbling. There are NO CRACKS! The inner rim on the underside of the lid measures 5" This is a great solid lid for your crock that has a 5" opening. The entire lid measures 6.25" This is from a VERY high end estate that is just FULL of high end top quality pieces including tin litho's.
