The notes that ceramic tablewares were primarily imported into Canada from the UK and France all through the 19th century. And that only utilitarian wares were actually produced domestically, and only from the mid-century on. George Lazier, and others like him, were the pioneers of the industry. The same article notes that in the early stages of the industry in Canada, the clay itself was as often as not imported, much of it from south of the border. This stoneware jug. Ever so slightly lopsided, thrown in the pottery of George I. Lazier, in Picton, Canada West, sometime around 1850, has only one problem. its handle was broken off. The tapered form of the jug is noteworthy because by the 1860s stoneware potters on both sides of the border had given up the ovoid form in favor of straight-sided jugs and crocks; in ten or fifteen years potters had learned two important things, how to modify the clay mix so that it would slump less during firing and to take advantage of the fact that more straight-sided vessels could be fitted into the kiln each time they fired it. Although well on the way to being a straight-sided vessel, this is still a relatively heavy jug(9.04 pounds/ 4.1 kg) slightly ovoid, thick-walled, and it did slump somewhat during the firing, all implying that it reflects production in the early part of the period, closer to 1850 than to 1867. What is most interesting is that the scar the broken handle left where it should have been joined to the body is completely smooth, indicating that the handle was never adhered properly to the body in the first place. At the neck there was good melding with the handle so that scar is appropriately rough, but the only thing that ultimately held the handle onto the body was the layer of glaze

Offered here this antique stoneware crock/jug. Gor geous blue decorated floral which I believe may be tulips. It has subtle ribbing the whole length of jug and varying colors of cobalt blues and some brown as well. Found in early homestead in Putnum county Virginia. Jug is peppered throughout and has blue rings around top and bottom. Near mint condition no chips. Cracks, hairlines or repairs. measures 14" tall 8" at widest point and 5" across bottom and holds 2 gallons. Has manufacturers hole near bottom(see pic) and was probably corked. This is an F. Woodworth Cobalt Decorated Stoneware Jug. Burlington. Vt. Woodworth ran the old Ballard Pottery in Burlington from at least 1875-1878. 14" H x 9" W Marked with F. Woodworth cobalt wash maker's stamp. Incised# 2 and decorated with a simple cobalt leaf design. The jug is in good overall condition. There are flat chips visible on the lip of the jug. As you will see in the photos, and certainly there are other signs of age on this nice jug. It appears that someone may have plugged a small 1/4" round spot. Located to the left and below the handle. The jug has an intricate and unusual bird design on the front in cobalt blue. Above the design is"3 White's Utica" in matching cobalt blue lettering. The jug has a natural grey coloration and is finished with a smooth glaze. A small handle is on the side of the crock for easy carrying. Dates to the 1860s-70s. Handle is intact shows two piece process with no chips. The lip has a 1/8" chip. Measures about 11 1/2"h X 6 1/2"w at bottom 2" at lip. Let the picture be the judge as to condition. Antique New York Whites Utica stoneware crock jug cobalt tulip decoration 19th c
An antique stoneware jug by Whites Utica(New York) and stamped as such near the top front. With cobalt tulip decoration, circa 1850s- 1870s. It measures approximately 11.5" tall and the bottom is about 7.5" across in diameter. There are two chips to the spout which can be seen clearly in the photos. There are also several shallow chips to the bottom edge(we counted four) Some glaze skips and tiny dings. But there are no hairlines or other problems we can see. Antique Emory & Bailey Unadilla NY Stoneware 3 Gal Crock Cobalt Flower Glaze Jug
Up for bid is a lovely 3 Gallon Antique Stoneware crock decorated with a cobalt blue foliate design and stamped Emory& Bailey Unadilla NY Stands 10 1/4" tall and measures 10 1/2" in diameter at the rim. Jug is in very good condition with 2 small old chips on the rim and 2 on the inside but no visible cracks but there is some surface wear or pitting around the cobalt design. This piece was part of a collection I recently acquired from a local Southern California estate. Please see pictures for details and condition.
