ANTIQUE 19THC ENGLISH STONEWARE LUSTRE GLAZED STONEWARE POTTERY CROCK JAR JUG
WHAT A CROCK OF. Gooseberry Preserves. Lemon Curd, or perhaps Clotted Cream, Dear Collectors, this is a genuine 19th c antique English lustre glazed Preserve Stoneware Crock Jar peculiar to those made across the big pond for food preservation of yesteryear in the British Isles. Every respectable farmstead would sport several in the kitchen and buttery/pantry for daily use and storage of preserved foodstuffs well before the days of modern refrigeration made these charming sturdy stoneware vessels outmoded and relegated to collector status. Quite similar to American Albany slip brown glaze. The exterior of crock is covered lavishly in pearl brown lustre wash glaze giving it a soft lustre reflective pearl shine with life that dances off the surface at all angles. It features twin lug handles at upper side to aid gripping crock during cooking ... morewith a decorative stamped incised single beaded ring running around the upper middle kissing lower handle extensions. It has a most gentle chamfered base bevel, then the bottom is simply unglazed stoneware clay patina. A thick well formed rim likely once had a lid no longer present, but no matter, clean sage gray green glazed interior is happy to hold your wooden spoons and kitchen utensils in period style. Overall it has a tall, slight flared upright shape like a fine pail with great dignity and usefulness to industrious housekeeper.remember Mrs. Bridges from Upstairs, Downstairs? Hudson would approve and no doubt Downton Abbey has a few on display as well. It stands 6.25" tall and 5.75" across open top. I would guestimate, holds about a quart liquid capacity overall. It is in sound fine condition with no damage, no chips, no hairlines. nothing beyond the the usual firing scratch in the making or tiny rough clay blob on rim glazed over. I know this is English having travelled to the UK buying fields myself seeing these on offer occasionally, and this lovely example was deacessioned last week from a retired English Dealer in Gettysburg, PA who purchased it

PRIM ANTIQUE~Nice 2-GAL. SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE MOONSHINE JUG w/Applied Handle
This heavy. 2-gallon antique salt-glazed"Beehive" shape stoneware jug is a beauty! I'm not sure what was in it originally, but I'd guess hard liquor or moonshine. It has a lovely dark tan-colored salt glaze finish, with a hand-applied handle. The surface has a wonderful patina, and the inside has a dark brown glaze. There are 3 old chips on the mouth, that are old enough to beautifully blend into the color of the salt glaze, a few stray black marks, and no other damage that I can find. A very unique piece from a bygone era! Unsure of maker. From the mid-late 1800s. I see no damage other than what I've already described. See photos. 10" tall x 8 1/2" in diameter. Including handle. Near and dear to antique Stoneware Collectors. Is this very nice estate fresh pickin' from a local estate.a beautiful condition Jug in approximately 1/2 gallon Salt Glaze size, to hold various liquids of yesteryear perhaps vinegar, salt brine, fermented juice, things we no longer drink today but better known as, The Good Old Days, to those of us born, before the button pushing e-techno-tronic digital age. Back in those days, if you said"mouse" we meant that little fur critter, not a plastic ... morething a ma jig. And a"screen" was a wire mesh you sifted with, not something you peered at plugged in. Likewise, the"cookie" was something Grandma baked, not some computer part. A"virus" was the plague or something that made countryfolk sick, not a machine malady. And a"app" Did you perhaps mean apple fruit? Never mind the"tower" Grandpa thought you were talking about the silo! Ahhh,Yes. Times past, the days when this JUG was new, selling for pennies at the country store as a utilitarian object now elevated to collector status desired by every Watcher out there reading this. The horse drawn carriages were clipclopping past at a lazy pace! This Jug is potted from northern grey clay indigenous to the area. With wonderful early type donut shaped lips and strong simple loop strap handle. Basic household stoneware where form follows function, has cork imbedded in top, perfect small size for shelf display. No signature marks but quite likely a NJ, NY State, or PA possible jug origin. Jug stands 9.5" tall on a 5" diameter base. The single rear strap handle is strong and perfect and the bottom is crackly old crusty grey s
Early Salt Glazed Advertising Stoneware Merchant Jug Preserve Jar CHICAGO ILL
Available for sale is an early salt glazed stoneware preserve jar. The advertising merchant jar is stenciled in blue with 3/4" block lettering& reads"THE Q. W. LOVERIN CO. WHOLESALE DEALERS IN GENERAL MERCHANDISE- 55- 59 WABASH AVE. CHICAGO" The stenciling has been lightly applied but is certainly legible. It measures 9 3/8" in height. 7 1/4" diameter base, dates from 1870- 1895. It's approximately a one& half gallon size jar. The jug is in excellent condition with a single 1/2" shallow flake on the inside rim(see Pic) It displays well with six(6) lines of advertisement. Early salt glazed containers from this era are seldom seen. A great Chicago example!
Old MONON Railroad Train Glazed Stoneware Pottery Crock Water Jug Indiana RR
Please check my other items. I always have a nice variety of old things I am finding in my area. Vintage Old MONON Railroad Train Railway Glazed Stoneware Pottery Water Jug Just one serious collector and this water jug will be gone! Acquired in upper Central Indiana from an estate. This is a glazed stoneware crock that is marked MONON ROUTE in blue letters across the front. These were used to carry water for the engineer or crew. This jug holds approximately one gallon of liquid. No cracks. One filled in chip on the bottom(which does not go through to the inside) and with a few small chips around the bottom edge and the usual minor mold flaws and that are commonly found on these items. The surface has a mottled look in places. But this is normal and common for these utilitarian items. A must-have for the Monon collector. Or for someone who ... morespecializes in collecting railroad-marked pottery pieces. As far as I know, there are only a few railroad-marked water jugs from perhaps 6 or 7 railroads. These crocks were never meant to last very long and to find one in this great condition is unusual. Imagine these being moved around and set in any given place on a moving train; the chances of their survival with that kind of use is minimal at best. These are not easy to find and I personally will suspect I will never find another as many were simply broken or tossed away when better ways of carrying water came along. Size reference: approximately 10-3/4" tall x 7-1/4" diameter and weighs over 7 pounds. If you live close enough to Lafayette. Indiana you can arrange for local pickup by calling 765-477-0324. Shipped USPS. Automatic confirmed delivery tracking in USPS and ebay. The following is from the internet research: The Chicago. Indianapolis& Louisville Railroad, known affectionately as the Monon, is Indiana's own. Monon derives from Potawatomi Indian words that sounded to the first settlers like metamonong or monong and seemingly meant"tote" or"swift running" In 1882, the railroad st
