Antique Wiliam Hare Fruit Canning Crock Jar Wilmington DE 1850s to 1880s
Antique William Hare Fruit Canning Crock Jar Wilmington DE 1850s to 1880s Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a great antique stoneware crock/jug for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. This piece was probably made in the mid to latter 1800s period. The crock/jug was made by Wm. Hare of Wilmington. DE. William Hare had come up with a new way of doing fruit canning with his jars. Look online and you will see interesting advertising that this fellow did back then to sell his wares. The jug has no handles and is most likely of a half gallon size. I do not see or hear(when thump it) any indication of major cracks in the jug. There is a chip on the outside lip of the jug opening just above the place opposite where the name ... moreof the jug maker is impressed into the jug. I can see a hairline crack that runs about 2" on the bottom of the crock and continues about 2" up the side of the crock. Various wear and stain marks over the jug surface. Clear impression of the Wm. Hare name on the crock. Same with Wilmington DE. But the WI did not take. Nice piece to add to one's collection as he is the only known potter in Wilmington during this time period that signed his work. The jug is 8-5/8" tall. By 5.5" across. The opening is 2-3/8" across on the inside and 3.75" on the outside. I would guess that this jug is a one gallon size. But you be the judge. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer. We are always open to reasonable suggestions. Make sure that this item meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. The item can be returned. But there is a $40 restocking fee to do so. So. Please carefully review all the attached pictures, ask all the questions you have. Come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it. Please check out our other Timeless Tokens
Antique Wiliam Hare Fruit Canning Crock Jar Wilmington DE 1850 to 1870
Wm. Hare Stonewear Crock with incised name at top. Wilmington. Delaware circa 1850- 1870 1814- 1885 The only Wilmington potter known to have signed his work. This crock is approximately a 1/2 gallon size. Measures almost 9 inches tall and 3.5 inches across the rim on the outer border. With a 2.25 inch opening. This is a"second" with a slumped side and has been broken and repaired and is missing one small triangular piece in the repair. Rim has large chips. Please see photos and email with any questions. Hare’ s was a long-lived enterprise(1839-1885) relative to the common nineteenth century pattern of shops closing or changing ownership every few years. The urban location of the Hare shop resulted in a rich archival record. Contrasting sharply with seasonal, farmer- potters in more rural settings. Hare may also be considered the ... morelast standing traditional potter in Delaware. Hare’s death and the closing of the shop corresponded to the death knell for traditional potteries on the East Coast. Traditional shops could not compete successfully in face of numerous factors including: dramatic increase in affordable glass containers; decreased cost and increased availability of industrialized ceramics from New Jersey and Ohio; decreased need for traditional agricultural vessel forms as populations became less self-sufficient and increasingly urban; development of metal canning facilities to process farm products; and increased labor competition from the rapidly expanding ceramic industry in New Jersey. Antique Raw Unglazed Stoneware Crock Fruit Jar with Tobacco Spit Glaze Feature
unusual stoneware with raw exterior Antique Canning Crock with Tobacco Spit Glaze Feature maker unknown offered as found great piece for decoration or utility Welcome to Simpler Times Antiques! Here for you today we're offering this antique stoneware canning crock or what some of the old timers around our parts often referred to as a stone fruit jar. Ours is a stoneware crock standing some 9.5" tall and having a base diameter of about 6.75" It features a neck of smaller diameter. About 4" with a mouth opening of about 3.5" The exterior surface of this crock is raw, or unglazed stoneware with a matte or slightly rough texture. The interior surface, naturally is glazed, likely salt glaze, as is the exterior of the neck only. This crock has no lid and likely never did. It was probably sealed after filling with paraffin ... morewax and cheesecloth which would have afforded a tight and leakproof closure. This piece bears no markings to indicate maker or place of manufacture. It's consistent with many Ohio River Valley utility pieces we've seen in the past and could have been made by almost any American pottery operating in the years around or just after the turn of the Twentieth Century. An interesting and unusual feature of this crock is what we often hear called a"tobacco Spit" glaze or accent. In this case it takes the form of a big thick daub of dark glaze material on only one spot on the side of this piece. You'll see it in detail in the photos. Sometimes these accents were intentional, frequently they were just the accidental occurrences of working in a pottery. They're called tobacco spit because tradition holds that they were sometimes caused by tobacco chewing pottery workers spitting onto the wares as they entered the kilns. We're offering this crock just as found at a local estate sale. You'll see in the photos that it has suffered a couple of small chips on its neck and also exhibits a tight hairline crack on the neck opposite those chips. Additionally. The
