It has subtle ribbing the whole length of jug and varying colors of cobalt blues and some brown as well. Found in early homestead in Putnum county Virginia. Jug is peppered throughout and has blue rings around top and bottom. Near mint condition no chips. Cracks, hairlines or repairs. measures 14" tall 8" at widest point and 5" across bottom and holds 2 gallons. Has manufacturers hole near bottom(see pic) and was probably corked. A very fine 2Gal. Storage Crock or Jar from Bennington. Vermont, ca.1860. The impressed stamp on the shoulder is Cobalt-Washed and reads: J. NORTON& CO. BENNINGTON, VT. This mark is extremely scarce. It dates to the 3-year period when Julius Norton and his son, Luman Preston(aka L.P. worked together from 1859-1861. When Julius died in 1861, the named changed to the more familiar E. L.P. NORTON. More information can be found in Ketchum's"American Stoneware" pp.43-44. The decoration. A prolific Cobalt Floral Bouquet, covers the entire front of the piece. It is very bold, impressive and will not disappoint. Two firmly applied Lug Handles, and rich, brown Albany Slip interior. There is some minor discoloration on body, and a few small nicks, dings and stone pops; otherwise excellent. Antique 6 Gallon Cobalt Floral Pattern Stoneware Crock/Churn - 1870's California
Offered for your bidding consideration is an antique stoneware crock. This piece was found in the cellar of a 1870's Stockton. CA home which was the site of a working vineyard and orchard during that time period. We are not sure of the true origins of this crock. Stockton was and still is a major inland port. Ag, dry goods, metals, timber and people came to and from Stockton by ship and boat via the San Joaquin Delta system from the San Francisco Bay in the 1800's. So it is certainly likely this piece could have made a long journey before arriving in Stockton. There were artisans in Stockton during the 1800's producing earthenware and glass goods. A good example of early pottery from these area may be found by seaching for"Stockton Art Pottery" online. Antique Stoneware Important 3Gal. Fort Edward, NY Crock w/ Cobalt Floral Bouquet
A very fine 3Gal. Storage Crock or Jar from Fort Edward NY. Ca.1870. The impressed stamp on the shoulder is Cobalt-Washed and reads: Haxstun, Ottman& Co. Fort Edward NY and a number 3 representing 3 gallons.This is the mark used from 1867-1872. The decoration. A prolific Cobalt Floral Bouquet, covers the entire front of the piece. It is very bold, impressive and will not disappoint. Two firmly applied Lug Handles, and rich, brown Albany Slip interior, some minor discoloration on body, and a few small nicks, one on the left handle, one bottom left side others interior lip, there is a hairline from back side of left handle to bottom with a stain at end otherwise excellent and no repairs. Healthy and true gold with no fading, no cutlery marks, one or two light scratches from improper storage on one plate. Lovely pink roses with daisies scattered in the center. The border is cobalt with lots of fine gold filigreed flowers and scrolls layered on top. The dessert bowl is 9.125 inches by 8.75 inches. It is 1.625 inches high at the lowest point and almost 2 inches at the highest point(the end) The 9 plates have a 8.75 inch diameter.
