THIS IS A GREAT PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY- IT IS A JAMES B. HAMILTON. GREENSBORO, PA. REDWARE OR EARTHENWARE ROOF TILE STAMPED JBH 1871 THERE IS ONE EXACTLY LIKE IT YOU CAN SEE ON THE WINTERTHUR MUSEUM WEBSITE. IT IS MUSEUM# 1967.0205.001 HERE IS ALSO AN EXCERPT FROM THE GREENSBORO HISTORY SITE: Albert Gallatin. A partner in the Albert Gallatin Company, purchased lots in Greensburgh in 1795. On a trip to Washinton, D.C. he met a group of German glass blowers who were heading to Kentucky to form their own company. He urged them to consider settling in Greensburgh. The group settled in New Geneva in 1790 and the plant operated there until 1805 when it moved to the northern section of Greensburgh, later called Old Glassworks. By 1807 the quality of Glassworks Glass was recognized as superior throughout the country. Old Glassworks did a booming ... morebusiness and prosperity filled the streets of Greensburgh. Albert Gallatin sold his interest in the glass factory to the Kramers. Who operated it until 1849. Although the Glassworks Glass Factory closed in 1849. By 1859 the town, now known as Greensboro, was flourishing with 500 inhabitants. Much of the success of the town was due to river trade and travel and other industries such as the pottery business and the Tile Manufacturing Company which produced roof tile. This is our very rare Canadian Stoneware Crock made by James R Burns of Toronto in the 1880's. It has the Blue Tulip design on the front. There are some chips as you can see in the 7 photos and 2 cracks that extend 2 1/2" from the lip straight into the body. But still a great find because of its rarity. Antique open stoneware crock blue decorated James Hamilton & Co Greensboro PA
A 19th century one gallon blue decorated stoneware crock by James Hamilton& Co. Greensboro, PA. It measures approximately 10" tall and the top is about 5-5/8" wide. There is a three-way hairline on the side toward the bottom, right of center, extending about 1.5-2" each way(part of it extends through the" Co" blue stenciling) and also about 2" inward on the bottom of the piece(please see photos) As to the rim, there is some white paint/residue on the top rim, as well as a chip to the inner rim of less than half an inch in width. There is a tiny chip to the lower 2nd inner rim of less than a quarter inch in width. There are other minor imperfections and small dings which may or may not have occurred in manufacturing. Though the flaws are there, they are mentioned only for accuracy and to be thorough- this ... morecrock displays nicely, having a simple shape; the blue stenciling and decoration is well preserved and it would be a great addition to any stoneware collection. Antique Stoneware Butter Churn. Cobalt Blue. James Hamilton & Co. Greensboro PA.
I am offering for auction an amazing old Stoneware Butter Churn. It is an old American piece. Circa 1870s. This Stoneware has a salt glaze and beautiful Cobalt Blue Artwork. The Art is stenciled in some places and hand painted in other places. It is Stenciled James Hamilton& Co. Greensboro PA. with some flowers also. Near the bottom there are several flourishes hand painted. Up under the rim there are also some hand painted areas. Pictured This Churn does NOT have it's lid. It measures 14.5" tall and the opening is 6.5" across. This Churn has two chips along the rim. Small gouge in front right middle occurred in firing. I think. A couple light cracks in the glaze on the bottom. All pictured. I would say it is in GR+ condition. Fantastic Beauty! Don't let it get away! I pack better than anyone. Large. 2 gallon size rustic, glazed transferware advertising crock in cream color, brown script and border design. There are no cracks, or chips! Very old but in pristine shape. Bottom marking states: 2 GAL indented into the stoneware with a makers mark of: Crown Stoneware. Measures 6 1/2" tall, 6" diameter. The advertising on the front says"Grand Medal for Marmalade James Carberry Marmalade. London England" There is a holly leaf wreath design around the advertising, all in a brown font.
