ANTIQUE 19THC ENGLISH STONEWARE LUSTRE GLAZED STONEWARE POTTERY CROCK JAR JUG
WHAT A CROCK OF. Gooseberry Preserves. Lemon Curd, or perhaps Clotted Cream, Dear Collectors, this is a genuine 19th c antique English lustre glazed Preserve Stoneware Crock Jar peculiar to those made across the big pond for food preservation of yesteryear in the British Isles. Every respectable farmstead would sport several in the kitchen and buttery/pantry for daily use and storage of preserved foodstuffs well before the days of modern refrigeration made these charming sturdy stoneware vessels outmoded and relegated to collector status. Quite similar to American Albany slip brown glaze. The exterior of crock is covered lavishly in pearl brown lustre wash glaze giving it a soft lustre reflective pearl shine with life that dances off the surface at all angles. It features twin lug handles at upper side to aid gripping crock during cooking ... morewith a decorative stamped incised single beaded ring running around the upper middle kissing lower handle extensions. It has a most gentle chamfered base bevel, then the bottom is simply unglazed stoneware clay patina. A thick well formed rim likely once had a lid no longer present, but no matter, clean sage gray green glazed interior is happy to hold your wooden spoons and kitchen utensils in period style. Overall it has a tall, slight flared upright shape like a fine pail with great dignity and usefulness to industrious housekeeper.remember Mrs. Bridges from Upstairs, Downstairs? Hudson would approve and no doubt Downton Abbey has a few on display as well. It stands 6.25" tall and 5.75" across open top. I would guestimate, holds about a quart liquid capacity overall. It is in sound fine condition with no damage, no chips, no hairlines. nothing beyond the the usual firing scratch in the making or tiny rough clay blob on rim glazed over. I know this is English having travelled to the UK buying fields myself seeing these on offer occasionally, and this lovely example was deacessioned last week from a retired English Dealer in Gettysburg, PA who purchased it

On the front is embossed: Finest Stilton Cheese on the top and Redgate& Co. London below the applied crest. There are a few cracks in the applied lion and unicorn crest but I believe these were present when the crest was applied to the crock because it looks and feels to me that the glaze is on top of the cracks suggesting that the cracks were present before the crock was glazed. I could be wrong. But I believe I am right. On the back of the crock is embossed: Doulton and Lambeth. It is a good size, measuring 5 1/8 in diameter by 5 1/2 in height. Antique Liquid Food English Stoneware Crock
This is a fine antique cream pot. It was probably used for cream or milk. But could be used for other liquid food as well. This is a very nice and reasonably priced vintage crock for the late 19th or early 20th century. Rich cream was often used for patients and sickly persons to enrich their diet. This pot has a rustic brown glaze. The pot measures 6 inches tall. And 2 1/2 inches wide. In sound good condition. Though a it does have some damage at the bottom of the lip. This week we have this antique(circa 19th century) Saltglazed adverting tabacco jar. This pot woul have advertised a type of tobacco(now worn and unreadable. I was able to find a similar one for Cut cavendish tobacco on line) it could also be an apothecary or confectionary jar. This piece has a wooden lid which I have a feeling is a replacement as the one if found online had a tin lid. Antique English Crock; Two-Tone Beige and Brown with Lid
This rustic and attractive English crock can be used for cooking or decorative purposes. I keep my wooden spoons next to the stove in old containers like these.
