Whether you call this a Cream Jar. Crock or Planter, one thing is for sure: this is a monumental 19thC. piece of Redware! Unmarked, but having a capacity of 4Gal. this extra-large Jar will be at home in any Antique Stoneware collection. This is a well-made piece by a highly skilled artisan; probably a Pennsylvania pottery, ca.1860 or earlier. The Semi-Ovoid form is topped with a slightly-squared lip profile. The exterior is unglazed, with age-appropriate wear and typical imperfections throughout. The Lead-Glazed interior is superb! Very reminiscent of Redware Cream Jars created by the Bell Family, with a slightly narrower lip profile. Please see photos for details and consider them as part of the description. The crock is decorated in cobalt blue of a bird and above the bird in incised letters is Flock& Van Arsdale Cornwall Ontario. The crock measures 10 7/8" high with an 8 7/8" top diameter. 9 1/4" wide. Here is an Antique c.Mid-19thC OVOID STONEWARE CROCK with WHIMSICAL FISH SCALE LIKE(for lack of a better description) BLUE DECORATION. No name on piece. Crock is approx. 8-3/4" tall. In"AS IS" condition as found in estate with crack lines around the bottom. One handle is half chipped off with other chips on top and bottom edges. Some small surface chips to crock on the rear side. Crock is still together however and still rings a bit when tapped. Interior surface is in old dirty untouched condition as found in estate. Charming and humble antique crock. Weighs 4.75 lbs. WHAT A CROCK OF. Gooseberry Preserves. Lemon Curd, or perhaps Clotted Cream, Dear Collectors, this is a genuine 19th c antique English lustre glazed Preserve Stoneware Crock Jar peculiar to those made across the big pond for food preservation of yesteryear in the British Isles. Every respectable farmstead would sport several in the kitchen and buttery/pantry for daily use and storage of preserved foodstuffs well before the days of modern refrigeration made these charming sturdy stoneware vessels outmoded and relegated to collector status. Quite similar to American Albany slip brown glaze. The exterior of crock is covered lavishly in pearl brown lustre wash glaze giving it a soft lustre reflective pearl shine with life that dances off the surface at all angles. It features twin lug handles at upper side to aid gripping crock during cooking ... morewith a decorative stamped incised single beaded ring running around the upper middle kissing lower handle extensions. It has a most gentle chamfered base bevel, then the bottom is simply unglazed stoneware clay patina. A thick well formed rim likely once had a lid no longer present, but no matter, clean sage gray green glazed interior is happy to hold your wooden spoons and kitchen utensils in period style. Overall it has a tall, slight flared upright shape like a fine pail with great dignity and usefulness to industrious housekeeper.remember Mrs. Bridges from Upstairs, Downstairs? Hudson would approve and no doubt Downton Abbey has a few on display as well. It stands 6.25" tall and 5.75" across open top. I would guestimate, holds about a quart liquid capacity overall. It is in sound fine condition with no damage, no chips, no hairlines. nothing beyond the the usual firing scratch in the making or tiny rough clay blob on rim glazed over. I know this is English having travelled to the UK buying fields myself seeing these on offer occasionally, and this lovely example was deacessioned last week from a retired English Dealer in Gettysburg, PA who purchased it

Antique Stoneware: Superb 19thC. New England Crock w/ Rare "Taunton Blue Bird"
This Rare 2Gal. Taunton Blue Bird" Crock is absolutely stunning. The Cobalt decoration is big. Bold and flawless; a perfectly executed Slip-Trailed design. This folky Bird is heavily shaded and perched on a thick, dotted twig. Clearly impressed on the shoulder: F,T, WRIGHT& SON, TAUNTON, MASS. There should be periods, rather than commas(F.T. WRIGHT) but this stamp error only adds to the appeal! Franklin Wright(and his son) ran this Massachusetts stoneware manufactory for 10 years, beginning in 1866. Fine, consistent Salt Glaze exterior; Albany Slip inside; some age-appropriate mineral stains on the rim and inside edge. A few insignificant nicks on the inner rim; otherwise in excellent overall condition! No cracks, repaired damage, restorations or other excuses! Antique Hamilton & Jones Greensboro Pa 1 gal Crock Stoneware Decorated 19thC VTG
Up for auction is this 1 gallon stoneware crock made by Hamilton& Jones Greensboro Pennsylvania in the mid to late 1800s. It is a putty color stoneware with a clean rich color inside. It is 9 1/2 inches tall. 5 3/4 inches across the top and 6 1/4 inches across the bottom. There is a slight hairline that starts at the rim and is hard to see, starts at top and is 2 1/2 inches long and is inside also. The other is what appears to be a glaze stress line on the back of the crock. As I have tried to show you in last two pics, this hairline or stress fracture starts 2- 3 inches from the top and spiders down like a lightening bolt, as you can see in last two photos, it is not inside the crock. It does reach to approx 2 inches from the bottom of the crock near where there is a chunk chip out of the bottom. Overall this crock is a great piece. ... moreThese imperfections are not noticable. A primitive 2Gal. Salt-Glazed Crock; early Ovoid form with Cobalt accents on applied lug handles. There is a capacity mark stamped on the collar. This is a New England piece. Likely made in Connecticut sometime around 1860. The overall condition is excellent. There is a surface line in the glaze near the base(lower right) and some minor flaws on the Albany Slip interior; these appear to be production related(see close-ups) No other excuses with this Keeper; displays exceptionally. See photos for complete details and further description. Measures 9"W x 11-3/8"H overall. The inner rim diameter varies from 6-3/4" to 7" The base measures 5-1/2" across; 8.8 lbs. Antique 19thC Stoneware Butter Crock Blue White, Relief Cows
ANTIQUE BUTTER CROCK WITH BLUE STENCILING AND RELIEF COWS This is a wonderful old antique stoneware butter crock with a wooden handle. The piece has blue paint over gray stoneware and has milk cows in low relief alongside the word. Butter, which appears on each side. The crock is 7-1/8" in diameter and 5" tall. The inside of the lid has some loss of glaze and crazing. The exterior of the lid also has crazing. There is a hairline to the base that seems to start near the base ring and extend up the side of the piece about 2" or so. All this is common for pieces of this age and type. Antique 19thC Stoneware Redware John Bell Waynesboro PA Turks Head Mold 2 Marks
We are listing for your consideration a lovely Antique 19th Century Stoneware Redware John Bell Waynesboro Pennsylvania Turk's Head Food Mold with Manganese Decoration. This mold is in Excellent Condition with 1 very slight small glaze chip to the top outer rim and 2 small slight glaze chips to the top inner rim. A very slight horizontal dark tight line on the side that does extend to the inside, the mold is guaranteed 100% secure, it rings true when you tap it. To the left of the outer glaze chip there is a slight manufactured surface line, there is glaze in it, very hard to see. There is crazing throughout and dark craze lines on the top of the top rim, you cannot feel them when you run your fingernail over. There are no other chips, cracks, and or repairs. We guarantee 100% you will be more than happy with the exceptional condition ... moreof this mold. The mold measures 8 3/4" in diameter x 2 7/8" tall at the outer rim x 3 1/2" tall at the inner ring rim x 1 5/8" at the inner ring diameter x 5 1/2" at the base diameter x 2 1/2" at the base hole and weighs approximately 1lb 8oz. The mold is marked impressed stamped J Bell twice on the outside. The glaze is a clear lead glossy glaze with manganese sponging throughout giving it great colors. The piece is very thin walled and lightweight. This is a rare early example of John Bell with an early mark in duplicate in a wonderful formed turk's head food mold with a scalloped edge and swirled interior. Up for bids is this Antique Mid 19thC American Salt Glazed Redware Blue Decorated 3 Gal Butter Churn. This churn was made during the mid 19thC most likely in Pennsylvania or Virginia. The crock is made of redware and it has a thick salt glaze. The crock holds 3 gallons and is marked as such between to 2 squiggled lines. The crock has a dog eared handle on each side of it. This piece stands 14 3/4" in height and is 9" from handle to handle. The crock is in great condition with just 2 minor flea bites which are very minor and shown in the last picture.
