This is a beautiful antique Martha Washington Sewing ... moreCabinet in very good condition. The cabinet opens to reveal a small desk! A s is typical for most pieces of this style. T he cabinet has flip-top side compartments and base drawers. Rather than three drawers. This unique piece has two drawers and opens and folds to reveal a beautiful pull-out writing surface, two letter compartments, and two small drawers with tiny brass knobs. When closed. The cabinet measures 31" tall, 33.75" wide and 14" deep. When the desk is open, it is 35.75" tall and 14" to 17.5" deep depending on how far the writing surface is extended. The drawers and side cabinets are clean and in excellent shape. The cabinet is in very good condition with no cracks or splits. It is not without blemish, but is structurally sound and in very good overall condition. This is a sturdy piece of furniture weighing 36 pounds. The most significant blemish is at the left hinge(when facing the piece) where the top folds back into the desk(this should be visible in the last picture) The hardware is a bit temperamental and has caused a knick in the wood. But the damage is not visible when the desk is open. There is some repair to where the back left leg attaches to the base which is not visible unless you are under the cabinet. I have owned this piece since the early 70s. There is some evidence on the bottom that it has previously been painted. It now has a beautiful finish with a lovely patina that is at least 40 years old. When it was purchased. The antique dealer indicated they had never seen another sewing cabinet that converted to a desk. And I have never seen another one in the more than 40 years I have owned this one. Eva Scott Fényes(1849-1930) was born to a family with roots in America’s early history. The only child of wealthy New York publisher Leonard Scott. She was tutored by her father in business affairs. She became a successful investor in her own right acquiring securities and property in years when a woman was regarded as a novelty in financial circles. Her first husband, U.S. Marine Corps General W.S. Muse was the father of her daughter, Leonora, born in 1879. An accomplished artist, her studies took her to Egypt where she met her second husband, Hungarian nobleman, physician Dr. Adalbert Fényes. In 1896, the family settled in Pasadena, California. Eva first spent time in New Mexico in the 1880s and was an early champion of Spanish Colonial and Native American art and history. In California. Her home became a salon and meeting place ... morefor the burgeoning art colony in Pasadena. At the urging of visionary Los Angeles Times editor, Charles Lummis, she documented the fragile condition of the California missions in hundreds of paintings and photographs that form a lasting record of these historic sites and helped to spur their preservation. Almost all were made of walnut or mahogany. Measures 30 7/8" long, 14" wide and 29 1/2" tall. Very fine clean solid complete condition, all the original knobs and hinges are present and intact. On the bottom is an old Railway Express label- check photo number 10. I guarantee this is a genuine early 20th century antique. I absolutely love the oak, it has a beautiful golden finish and patina. I doubt you will ever find another in oak better than this. I can have it professionally packed and shipped by a local packing store. History& Information: A totally innocent but still inappropriate use of an association is the so-called Martha Washington sewing cabinet. The cabinets that are called Martha Washington today generally have two or more drawers in the center flanked by half round compartments on each side of the cabinet that are covered by a shaped lid that usually works on concealed hinges. Martha's original sewing cabinet was a small work table. Open below or shielded by a drop cloth, with two compartments for material on each end. They were made in America from the 1780s to the mid 1800s. The current version with three drawers and two flat top lids, which incorporated the newly developed"Soss" type invisible hinge, over the material compartments, showed up in the 1920s as part of the"novelty" furniture movement. This was aimed at producing smaller, inexpensive articles like tea carts, magazine racks and smoking stands that people could afford to buy during the Depression era when they could not afford large dining room sets or bedroom sets. I purchased this cabinet at a local auction house. It was sold as an antique but that is all I know about it. One drawer has two metal thread spindles, another drawer has a removable sewing tray. There's a 1" hole in bottom of one side chamber and other age related marks.
