This fine silver plate piece features a round base with 4 cabriole feet in the Rococo style. It has oval medallions around the base with a scrolling acanthus leaf handle that raises above the base. The glass jar is acid etched and hand painted with a large landscape scene featuring a mother and child walking on a large estate. The painting is further enhanced with heavy applied gold enameling. There are also the marks"Quadruple 448" The anchors date this piece to 1865-1867. The insert is a very pretty opalescent light blue satin glass with a diamond hatch mark design. Please see photos as I am doing a terrible job of describing the beauty of this piece. The glass is slightly bluer on top and more opal on the bottom. There is wear to the rim but no chips. Cracks, or other damage to the piece. The silver plate holder is very decorative with a floral design and a ruffled edge. The lid of the pickle jar has a brighter finish than the rest of the piece and I am unsure if it is the original lid. Please make your own determination. The decoration on the tongs has floral elements but also may not be original to the piece. The pickle castor measures about 10&1/2" tall and just over 6&1/2" at its widest and the glass insert measures about 4&1/4" tall and about 3&1/2" in diameter. The FIGURAL FRAME was made to look like a cucumber“PICKLE” VINE. It wraps around the base and shoots into the air. It is covered with leaves resembling the leaves of the cucumber vine. Cradled in the large leaves at the base is the circular ring that hold the FIGURAL PICKLE BARREL JAR. The large leaves actually wrap around the jar to hold it in place. The naturalistic theme continues on the lid. Atop the lid embossed with flowers. Rests a large open-winged butterfly. This is one of the few PICKLE CASTORS that beautifully represents its purpose. Victorian Silver Plate Pickle Castor Pressed Glass Claw Foot Tongs Meriden 1800S
Up for auction is this lovely Ca. 1800's Silver Plate Pickle Castor From The Meriden Co. Connecticut. Quite ornate with scrolling Flowers And wreath type handle on lid. The Claw Feet tongs are fantastic as well. The glass has a sunburst center and nicely etched 4 sides as well. Overall a real sweet piece. The castor measures 9 1/2" overall height and 7 1/2" to point of top finial. It is 3 7/8" wide& deep. It is marked Meriden B* Company 137 on the base. The entire piece is in excellent condition. No chips or cracks on the beautiful& ornate glass. The base. Lid and tongs are free of any cracks or repairs, the lid has a small indentation as seen in the first photo.

In one of William Heacock’s reference guides and he attributed the Herringbone pattern to Phoenix glass but I have not found that information to be concrete. There are not any chips. Nicks or repairs to the glass. The plated holder has had both side attachments repaired. They do need to be repaired again. Ornate Victorian Quad. Silver Plate Pickle Castor Blue Glass/Crystal?
I have seen some of the other pickle castors that have sold for ridiculous money recently and in my opinion this would fall into a higher quality category. Both the lid and base have such beautiful detail. The blue of the glass or crystal(not sure) is a great color and has no chips or cracks. No damage to piece whatsoever. PAIR PICKLE CASTOR HOLDERS BASES SILVER PLATE VICTORIAN STYLE ENGLAND CASTER
Here are two Victorian style pickle castor bases that are looking for inserts at their new home. They are not marked. But I assume they are silver plate, however use the photos to decide as I am not 100% sure what they are made of or how old they are. One of them is marked made in England on the bottom& the other is not marked. They are not an exact identical pair, but match so well nobody would really notice. The fork holders are intact on both& they are in good shape w/ sturdy handles. All I note is the seam on one is slightly apart at the top as shown in photo, however it is still sturdy and this may just be a manufacturing flaw. As shown in one photo, they do quite well to hold standard modern pickle or Amish jam jar(not included) They are about 9.25” tall and would hold an insert about 3.25” square w/ the drip catcher holders ... moreabout an inch in diameter. Up for sale is this beautiful Victorian quadruple plate Pickle Castor with cranberry jar and tongs. At the top it has an owl sitting on a branch with a circular decoration next to him. Ornate base and top. Good condition for its age but there is some plate loss on tongs and supporting rods. It is made by the Derby Silver C. mark is on the bottom. The cranberry jar is in good condition no chips. Might be a replacement. Smaller in diameter then the base. Lid fits perfect on it. The metal stand measures 11 1/2" tall. The tongs feature a unique hand design at the base. Measures 10 3/8" tall x 8" wide x 5 1/2" deep. In Very Good Condition. The glass inserts have some very light wear. Not chips, nicks or cracks. Lot of 2 Silverplate Victorian Pieces Pickle Castor Basket This auction is for a lot of two silverplate pieces from a recent estate sale. One piece is a pickle castor stand and features beautiful flowers. The opening of the pickle castor stand is about 3.5" wide on the inside of the rim. The stand is about 9.5" tall. It includes the piece on the side for the spoon to rest on. I am not sure if the second stand is to a brides basket. A squatty pickle castor or something else. It measures approximately 4.125" wide and is about 4" tall. It has an intricate pattern around the edges and also has a spoon rest on the side. Both of these pieces are tarnished and I don't see any marks. I assume that they are silverplate. But could possibly be pewter. They come as-is with no guarantee as to the material. Here we have a very unique. 1880's era ~ VICTORIAN"DOUBLE" PICKLE CASTOR WITH BOTH ORIGINAL CUT GLASS INSERTS WITH FIGURAL BIRD GLASS LIDS ~ This was made by SIMPSON HALL& MILLER WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT. I imagine it is not a real easy example to find, as it is the only one like it we have ever seen. It is certainly quite fancy and was probably fairly expensive to purchase, some 125 or so years ago. I would guess that not all that many were ever sold, and you usually find pretty basic single models, and one like this would have been purchased by a fairly affluent family. The condition is actually quite good given its age. The only thing that needs mentioned on the cut glass inserts is that one of the lids has an edge chip on the top and bottom in the same area approximately. see picture#9. Both bases and the other lid is ... morein excellent condition with no chips or damage" which is pretty amazing" The two cut glass inserts measure 6 1/2 inches tall" to the top of the bird" by 3 inches across at the base, and get larger near the top. The frame measures 11 1/2 inches tall by 8 1/2 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches deep. The fancy figural silver plate frame shows some wear to the silverplate, and we have not tried to polish or clean it. This is just the way the pickle castor looked when it was discovered in an estate this week. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Old Victorian Albany Silver Plate Co. Triple Plate Pickle Castor stand tongs lid
This auction is for an old Victorian Era pickle"stand/ holder/ frame" with its lid and tongs. There is NO glass jar. There is a toe broken off one of the claws on the tongs. And part of the ornamentation is broken off one side near the base. You can see where the stand sides are welded to the base. Otherwise this is a very very pretty stand, lid, tong set. It just needs a jar to complete. Even with the missing parts it is still functional and would make a lovely addition to a Victorian table setting. This lovely Victorian pickle caster was made by the Derby Silver co. The stand is highly detailed with an engraved base with flowers. Leaves and butterflies. At each side of the base are leaf shape flairs that have a inlay of cutwork with flowers and leaves. The side poles rise up to the scroll style hook to hold the tongs. Arching over the jar is a pointed base covered with a double arch going down each side or the top. In the arch are more long stem flowers with leaves and other flower clusters. Size of just silver plate holder:7 inches at widest point;4 ¼ inches across bottom of base; Stands 12 ¼ inches tall The tongs is made in an arch round rod with applied detailed flowers and leaves midway down the tongs. At the ends of the tongs are shaped as detailed bird’s feet to grip. The tongs have a nice springiness to grip the pickles ... moreand return to normal shape when released. Size of tongs: 7 inches long; 5/8 inches wide at flowers The cover of the jar is a round dome in shape with a band of engraved flowers. Leaves and butterflies as the same as the trim design on the sides of the base. On top of the jar is a bird done in great detail and craftsmanship. Care was taken in the engraving of the feathers, face and feet. The glass jar has a raised pattern design of flowers, leaves, arched vines, chevrons and triangles. On the bottom is a rippled flower petals pattern from the outer edge to the center. Size of jar and cover: 3 ¼ inches across base; 7 inches tall Condition: Overall great for its age: slight ware and few dings on top ridge of cover; glass jar has few small chips on only top rim(well covered by lid) slight ware on rim of base ware jar sits. Up for auction is this beautiful victorian pickle castor. The glass insert is a very thick heavy amber amber glass insert with raised squares. Much heavier than the cranberry one i have listed. This glass is perfect condition. I see no chips cracks or breaks. I don't see any wear or roughness on the glass. The lid fits snug. The silver plate is decent. Needs a cleaning.it is tarnished. This is one of the nicest pickle casters I've ever had. The frame is very unusual and the lid definitely matches the base. The jar is a wonderful rubina glass with enameled flowers. Condition: the frame has separated at the top behind the flower nothing a little epoxy wil not fix. Around the back side the gallery the jar sits in has two losses in the little design. Up for auction with no reserve is an estate lot of 19th century Victorian Period silver plate and cranberry pickle casters. This lot includes 2 matching beautifully enameled cranberry glass with a matching floral hand painted designs. The frames are also quite nice but do show some wear as seen in photos. The jars are in excellent condition. With the exception of a small chip on the mouth of the small jar. Both jars have a lovely cranberry matte finish on the outside and shiny on the inside. The largest jar is 6" high x 6 wide" The smaller matching jar is 3 1/2" high x 3 3/4" wide. The castor is missing its lid and the side fork holder appears to be broken off. The bottom of the castor says"quadruple plate. Wilcox Silver Plate Co. 0693" The inside glass jar is very nice and appears to be EAPG. The bottom has some flea bites but is in overall great condition for its age. The jar is ridged and has a very nice etching around the upper band. The Wilcox Silver Plate company was based in Meriden. CT in the mid-1800's and produced some of the finest silver plated pieces.
