Victorian pickle castor, IVT cranberry glass, hand ptd insert, & tongs x2, c1890
Victorian pickle castor. Metal unmarked, IVT(inverted thumbprint) cranberry glass, hand painted insert, floral spray in raised thicker enamel, tongs x 2, c1890. The castor is about 9.75" tall and 6" wide. The castor is probably original and from a quality company. The number"24" is scratched into the base(photo 7 at about 5:00) The glass insert has a ground and gilded top. There is a small fleabite on the inner rim of the insert(photo 5) which is minor. I did polish lightly, and checked the plating. The plating is all intact with no worn spots. It could be thoroughly polished when received, however, old silver plate looks better to me with some oxide to reflect its antiqueness. My opinion. Added Feb 11. 4:45 pm: The castor has been identifed as a excellent example of the Meriden Silver Plate Co. by an experienced collector/author. ... moreAs a Meriden castor, it would be"quadruplated. Offered from a NJ estate is a rare and beautiful Victorian ear double castor set A silverplated stand with flower and scroll embossing around cups and handle. Flared embossed feet. Decorative scroll hook for the tongs which have 3 claw scaled grabbers and dogwood flowers applied on the handles where you'd grip. The jars are gorgeous cranberry glass in a melon rib pattern. They flare at the bases and taper to straight sides. The silverplated lids are beautifully embossed with raised scroll and have knobs with feather motif. Excellent vintage condition with no dents. Scratches or dings to the plate. The bottles are in excellent condition with the exception of a 3/8" shallow rim chip. On one that is shown in close up in the final photo. The cover of the pickle castor is silver plate and it is hinged to the frame. There also is a pickle fork that is silver plated as well. The condition of this piece excellent. The silver plating is in excellent condition. There are no breaks or dents to the silver plated frame. The frame is marked on the bottom" James W. Quadruple Plated, 154, Hard White Medal and is in excellent condition, no dings or dents.it shined up beautifully, the lid is not hallmarked but it obviously matches the base, there is a ding on top of the lid and few dents along the very edge of the rim however, like the holder it still shined up beautifully, I am not certain who produced the hand painted cranberry insert but it does have a nice polished pontil which one would attribute to a reputable glass company, it is approximately 4 5/8" tall ... moreand is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks or hairlines are noted, the pickle tongs need some cleaning and I am not certain they are original to the set(though there are some similarities) this is how it was found and this is the way I will sell it. In one of William Heacock’s reference guides and he attributed the Herringbone pattern to Phoenix glass but I have not found that information to be concrete. There are not any chips. Nicks or repairs to the glass. The plated holder has had both side attachments repaired. They do need to be repaired again. The Frame Measures: 10.75" tall on 4 reticulated feet. 4.75" on each side with a round 3.25" wide cut-out for the jar- floral engravings on 2 opposing corners- 5" wide embossed floral border around the entire piece between the base and the feet. The decor on the Insert- Hand Painted enamel Blue Berries and gold outlined green& yellow leaves along with more gold leaves and ferns in the background- is repeated 3 times around the squatty shaped cranberry glass jar. Antique Victorian Cranberry Enameled Thumbprint Footed Silverplate Pickle Castor
Up for auction is this beautiful cranberry enameled thumbprint pickle castor in a silverplated frame marked Meriden# 0639. The cranberry insert is beautifully decorated around the entire perimeter with daisies and gold highlights around the jar and at the top rim. It is a corset shaped insert in very good condition with just a few flea bites at the top of the insert. The insert stands 4 1/2" tall. The silverplated frame is in very good condition also with no loss to the silverplate. It stands 11 1/4" tall. The sides of the frame are beautifully embossed with leaves. Flowers and fruit. There is a pair of tongs that hang from the side of the frame.

Tongs and cranberry glass insert. It is in good working condition with a mechanical tilting lid. It includes the tongs and a cranberry glass insert. There is wear from age and use and some silver plate losses to the silver plated finish. The frame measures about 12 and 1/2 inches high. The tongs are 6 inches long. The glass insert measures 4 inches high and 3.25 inches wide. There are no chips or cracks to the glass insert. I do not see a maker's mark. It has a nice Aesthetic Movement Victorian Style with birds and figure heads around the base. I would date it to be 45 +/ years old. Here is a beautiful Cranberry enameled thumbprint Pickle Castor in a tall footed Silverplated frame marked Reed& Barton# 1230. The frame stands 11 1/2" tall and is in perfect condition with no loss to the silverplate. It is highly embossed and has a pickle fork hanging from the side of the frame. The Cranberry enameled thumbprint insert stands 4" tall and is beautifully decorated with sprays of blue and pink flowers. The insert has a few very tiny flea bites at the top of the insert. This is a great castor for any pickle castor collection.

Up for auction is a Victorian Aurora Silver Company Pickle Castor with a Northwood Glass Company Cranberry Daisy and Fern Pickle Jar. Lid, Sterling tongs and a Silver Plate fork. There is a"figural" Pan" or Goat face on front and back on the frame. It has four feet. The plating is in very. Very, good condition as you can see by they photos. This Castor stands at 9 1/2" tall. The fork is stamped. William Rogers" The tongs are stamped, Sterling" on the top inside curve. The jar has no chips or nicks. It has a couple of Glass Master's extra glass nubs. See photo#11. This is very common in hand blown pieces. The rim has another section that looks like a factory piece of extra glass fused to it. The skirt of the lid has some small nicks from use. See photo#7. Victorian Silverplate Pickle Castor, "Quadruple Rockford 663" Cranberry w/enamel
This is a very fine Victorian quadruple silverplated PICKLE CASTOR frame with Lid and Tongs made by the Rockford Silver Plate Company. The frame has a 12 flute sided CRANBERRY GLASS insert with beautiful enameled daises and for-get-me-not. The lid fits the insert perfectly. The frame is 11 1/2" high and 4" across at the base. The insert is 4 1/4" and it measures 3" across. The bottom of the frame has the Rockford maker's mark and is marked and numbered"Quadruple Rockford Sil_ 663" There is a small chip on the outer side of the glass rim(see photo) of the insert. There is some pitting in the base of the frame but it is covered by the glass insert.

I love the cranberry jar. The best is the bird head designed. Tong holder and the bird claw designed tong. Truly lovely. Item Description*Jar size: 3.75" width(at widest point) x 4.25" height*Metal holder size: 5" width(at widest point) x 11" height*The metal holder is marked Superior Silver Plate Company- Quadruple- 19 on the underside(see photo 12) Set includes holder frame. Cranberry jar, tongs and jar lid. I am not sure if all the pieces are were originally together. They were purchased together about 20 years ago. Condition*Metal is in excellent condition. We are often amazed that these beautiful pieces were made just to serve condiments on the Victorian table. Most of us. Today, just take the pickle or relish jar out of the refrigerator and put it on the table! But. In the late 1800's, this would have been a delight for any hostess to showcase her fine dinner as it was passed around the table with it's tasty treat inside. The frame features an aesthetic design with a band of scrolling entwined flowers held off the tabletop on four ball-tipped spade feet. The leaf design on the feet is mirrored in the elements at the base of the ... morehoop handle and on both sides of the open work crest that winds above the top loop. Atop the jar is an ornate highly chased lid with an assortment of garden dwellers- including a plumed bird. A dragonfly, and a butterfly amid a sea of lush flower blossoms and foliage. Tongs with tiny hand pincers and bow finger rests hang from one side. The cranberry art glass insert has an inverted thumbprint design that plays with the light when empty and magnifies the jars contents when full in a most wonderful manner. Beautiful! Marked on the bottom with the Middlefield Plate Co. logo- Quadruple Plate. The words Hard White Metal and the number#96. Measures approximately 10-7/8" to the top with a 4-7/8" footprint. Up for auction is this beautiful Cranberry Enameled Paneled Sprig Pickle Castor in a Simpson. Hall& Miller Silver Plate frame marked# 126. The frame stands 10" tall and is in very good condition with no loss to the silver plate. The Cranberry enameled glass insert stands 4" tall. There are a few flea bites at the top of the insert. The glass was made by Harry Northwood, Wheeling WV& Dugan Glass Co. Indiana, PA. CA. 1880's. There are a pair of tongs hanging from the side of the frame.

Here is an absolutely gourgeous enameled Cranberry Baby Thumbprint pickle castor in a fancy footed silver plate frame marked Wm. Rogers Mfg. Silver Plate# 454. It stands 11 1/4" tall. Antique Victorian BARBOUR BROS 115 Pickle Castor Cranberry Glass Hand Painted
This gorgeous cranberry glass pickle castor measures 9 1/2" in height and 7 1/2" at widest point. It comes with its original tongs. That measure 6 1/4" in length. I realize it needs a good cleaning and polishing, but I will leave this up to the buyer. As for condition. It is outstanding! The gold leaf at the top of the jar shows wear, but that is about it. The glass fades to a clear bottom, and has a ripple texture to it. The bottom is marked: BARBOUR BROS CO. SILVER QUADRUPLE 115 I have included many photos. So please view for best description. Antique Cranberry Northwood Paneled Sprig PICKLE CASTOR Jar
Antique Decorated Cranberry Glass PANELED SPRIG pattern Pickle Castor Jar. Made by the Northwood Glass Company. Circa late 1890's to very early 1900's. 4 1/8" tall by 4 1/8" diameter at the widest part, by 3" diameter at the base. The top rim measures 2 7/8" outside diameter, and 2 11/16" inside diameter. No chips, nicks or cracks. Excellent enamelling. Minimal wear to the applied gold gilt. VERY Nice! Selling without reserve.
