VICTORIAN MERIDEN FIGURAL SILVERPLATE POWDER JAR DRESSER SET pickle castor form
Just acquired out of a wonderful Private Midwest estate. We are able to offer this exceptionally hard to find, ~ MERIDEN FIGURAL SILVERPLATE DRESSER SET WITH ALL THREE ORIGINAL CUT& ETCHED GLASS BOTTLES ~. We have never seen this early example of Meriden silverplate, and I am quite certain that not many were ever made or exist as well. It is marked MERIDEN SILVER CO# 46 and dates to the early 1880's we would estimate. It measures 15 inches tall by 10 inches wide by 5 inches deep. It is in very nice condition, although it could use a gentle polishing. The silverplate looks to be in pretty nice condition with some fairly minor expected wear from age and use. The amazing thing is that this set was found with all three original cut glass inserts that are in fabulous condition! There are two cologne bottles and one lidded powder jar in ... morethe upper center. There are no chips or cracks on any of the pieces and only a few little flea bites around where the stoppers go in the cologn bottles. I can't imagine that you could ever find a nicer example to add to your Victorian silverplate collection than this one here. This would also make a unique addition to a pickle castor collection as it has a very similar form. 19th century Double Pickle Castor set.
Up for auction is this very nice Late 19 th Century Double Pickle Castor Set. Having two frosted glass jars with etched design with silver plate covers all situated on a sliver plate base. Includes one pair of tongs with three fingers on each side. There are no apparent markings on this set but it is very nice. There is a minor indentation noted at the base and some wear to the silver. A few flakes are missing here and there. There is no damage to the frosted glass jars. It measures 9.5 inches tall and 8 inches wide. If you have any questions at all please ask before bidding. Featured at auction is this Neat Antique Meriden Quadruple Plate Pickle Castor Set. With Repaired Pomona Glass Insert. The Castor Set stands 10 1/2" tall, with outside Base of 4 1/2" and 3 1/4" Insert Base and Cover. The Tongs are 7" long. On the bottom of the Holder is Meriden Quadruple Plate 227. The Glass Insert is Pomona Glass Circa: 1884 and produced by the New England Glass Co. and is damaged and someone tried to fix it, but we bought it this way, so we are selling it this way, so it stays together. Wonderful Victorian Aesthetic Movement silverplate castor stand! The base has a motif of birds. Flowers and outdoors urns with more flowers. The sides that hold the jars in are branches of leaves. And at the very top, a little cherubic child, holding a bird! Marked Rogers Smith& Co. on the bottom. Some wear consistent with age/use, and traces of silver polish residue on the figure. But overall in good, displayable condition. Approx. 7.75" X 3.75" X 11.375" tall. Now. About the jars.I was so smitten with the framework, I didn't pay much attention to the jars. But as I started to list them, it occurs to me that they may not be original. They seem kind of plain. I did an ebay search of pickle castors, and there were others with very simple finials, too. But.the lids have no maker's marks, and I am thinking they are ... morevintage but not antique or original to the frame. I could be wrong, so please take a look and use your own expert judgment(they do seem to fit well) They are crystal, with a cut sort-of starburst on the bottoms. One bottom has a polished cut that looks like the glassworker made a mistake. I also see a few very teensy chips on the bottom. Plus they are slightly different from each other, and have a hand-blown quality. Both the forks do say ROGER SMITH& CO. So perhaps the jars are ok? Strange to have the right forks but not jars. Cobalt Blue Torquay Pickle Castor Set– Frame# 363 by Benedict Mfg. Co.1894-1953 measures 10 ¼” H x 3 ½” W x 3 ½” D. This frame sits on four little lions paw feet. The silver plate on the frame and tongs is excellent and original. The lid was rubbed to hard and needs resilvering. A charming blue cobalt Torquay jar enameled in white and yellow forget me knots and green leaves. Is the centerpiece of this set. This unique ridged style of jar is named for the town in which it was hand blown and not for its highly desirable melon ridged design. Torquay is located on the Wessex Coast of Southern England where the art of hand blowing glass is still taught today. According to William Heacock, noted author on Victorian Colored Glass, Torquay is a Kopp design produced by Consolidated Lamp& Glass Co. around 1904. The jar shows no wear ... moreand is a perfect fit to this frame. All proportions are beautifully matched. The jar measures 3” H x 4 ¼” W x 3” across the lip. No chips or dings nor flaws noted. Cobalt is a blue colorant that produces rich blues in glass making when used in mixes containing potash. Very few Victorian jars were made in the cobalt blue color. The tongs in this set measure 6 ½” in length and are three prong with a little spear creating the center prong. This beautiful set is circa late 19 th to early 20 th century.

Rolling Wagon Vaseline Glass Pickle Castor Set Frame#323 manufactured by Wm. Rogers Mfg. Co. quadruple plate Hartford. Va. frame measures 12 ½ H x 4 ½” W x 5” Deep in excellent original condition. The Vaseline glass jar insert is the Block pattern by George Duncan and Sons& U.S. Glass between1891-1904. The pattern is also recognized as Duncan Block, Waffle Block and Duncans Late Block. This jar is original to this frame. It shows some expected minor flea bites on the inner lip from use. The base of this Vaseline glass jar is smooth to the touch with no cracks nor visible straw marks in the glass. In natural lighting this jar shades from a bright yellow to a glowing green. Under a black light the jar turns neon green. This coloration is produced by uranium used in the glass making process. This is a very rare half frame pickle ... morecastor set. The wheels under the frame move smoothly. There is no evidence of any repairs. The frame is strong and straight. In“The American Pickle Castor” by Bernice Thach on page 190 shows a nearly identical wagon frame by another hollow ware maker. Hartford Silver Co. A set of original tongs with tiny grabber hands measuring 6-5/8” long is included. Both the tongs and the original hanging lid match the patina of the frame. The lid fits the jar correctly with no overlap nor overly tight feel. The frames base design features six half moon scenes; a sail boat with mountains in the distance. A cabin in a mountain setting, a loon on a lake, a schooner in a mountain scene with a bird in the foreground, a mountain scene with a bear and a seal, and a flying egret with pines and mountains in the background. Frames produced by Wm Rogers Mfg Co date from 1865. This is a highly desirable rolling frame and jar combination from the Victorian era circa 1889.

Nice old antique circa 1900 Silverplate Hickerboch Company(I think that is what the base mark says) silverplate pickle castor with Northwood Cranberry Paneled Sprig Pattern Hand Decorated Enamel Painted Glass Insert with metal lid. Its a pretty set. The cranberry glass insert is in good condition with the only minor thing being some very small nicking on the top edge.seen only when the metal is removed and its is examined very closely. The metal lid has a small ding in the bottom edge and is a bit out of round but still looks great on the set and fits nicely over the cranberry pickle glass insert. The frame is marked on the bottom and it looks to me like it says Hickerboch Silverplate Co. not sure its hard to see. The frame is 10 3/4" high. The glass insert is 4 1/4" high and 2 7/8" wide across the top measured with the lid ... moreremoved. The set originally had a pickle tong that hung from the frame but this one was missing when I got it. They can be bought easily on Ebay if desired.
