Vintage Large Mappin & Webb Silver Plated 6 Slice Toast Rack
Mappin& Webb Silver Plated Toast Rack Here we have for auction a lovely silver plated Mappin& Webb 6 slice toast rack. In excellent condition. It is notoriously difficult to date Mappin and Webb pieces as they did not have a system of published date marks. However, from the style, we think it dates from the late 1930s or 1940s. It has an etched mark which looks like initials at one end and the Mappin& Webb mark underneath. It came to us very tarnished and we have gently cleaned it up but it will need a little more TLC to bring it back to its former glory. It is a very elegant rack for its size. Using the curves of its base rather than feet. It measures 16.5cm long, 8cm high(plus 5cm for the handle) and 12cm wide. Any questions. Please ask via our eBay messaging facility. IMPORTANT! This is a Antique/ Vintage Hallmarked English Silverplate 6 Slice Toast Rack. This beautiful old toast rack was purchased in England. The silverplate is gleaming and this heavy toast rack appears to be of very high quality. It weighs 10.4 ounces and it has maximum overall dimensions of 5 3/4" x 3 1/2" The height to the tops of the rings is 3 1/4" and the height to the top of the handle is 5 1/2" We have limited knowledge of British sterling hallmarks. But we do not have any expertise with respect to silverplate hallmarks. I did some cursory research but was not able to find out anything specific about the maker or the age. The marks are shown in a closeup photo. They are(from left to right) a cartouche with a old English capital letter. I cannot identify the letter nor its meaning. Based on the next cartouche I thought ... moreit might be the first portion of the maker's mark. a cartouche with Bro and a superscript's' I thought this might be the second portion of the maker's mark. a cartouche with an old English capital S. I thought that this. In conjunction with the follow EP that the S was for silver but I do not know for sure. However, I did find quite few other makers' marks with an S adjacent to, but separate from, EP a cartouche with EP sideways. This seems almost certainly to be for Electro Plate. This silver plate toast holder came from an auction in Vermont. The invoice called it"hollow ware" but I am not sure. There is not a maker's mark. It has some rough spots and wear. See pictures five and six. The rack measures approx. 7 1/2" by 4" and stands 5 1/2" in height on four bun feet to the top of the looped handle. The silverplate is in very good condition and I see no faults. You may want to give everything a quick polish but I see no plating loss. It is marked as pictured with what I believe is a registration number 1508 on one end and 41 in a diamond. Perfect for brunch. Breakfast in bed or table use. Vintage toast racks also make very functional and useful letter holders for the desk. This rack is very sturdy and well made. It weighs 13 ounces. This lovely toast rack features an unusual scalloped design and fancy embossed feet. Has an old professional solder repair at end of center bar on base(see photos) No other noted damage or repairs. Measures 5 7/8" high. 7 3/4" wide and 4 1/2" deep. Often these attractive toast racks are used today as a letter or bill holder. ANTIQUE LARGE ART DECO SILVER PLATED 6 SLICE TOAST RACK LEE& WIGFULL SHEFFIELD This is a lovely original Art Deco toast rack with the rack graduated to the centre standing on round ball feet all symmetrical to the other side as with the Art Deco movement. W idth: 18cm(widest point) Depth: 10cm(widest point) Height: 13.5cm(highest point) It could do with a polish there is some loss to the plate in various places and it is slightly misshapen and dented in places.
