Antique Silverplated "Silent Butler" Crumb Tray and Brush with Bakelite handle
Here's a fun silent butler or crumb tray in silver plate. The front of the tray has a crest depicting two unicorns and an arm holding a dagger. The tray could us a polishing. But there are some areas in the edge of the tray where the silver has worn away. The handle slides into the back of the tray. It appears to be Bakelite. A great vintage item! The tray measures about 6 inches wide at the widest point. The brush measures about 4.25 inches wide. The brush and tray measure about 4½ inches long when the brush is attached to the back of the tray. It has an incised mark"EPC" and the Sheffield mark. This piece is in excellent condition with some minor scratching. The silverplate has a couple of areas of wear that can be seen in the pictures. Vintage Crescent Antique Silent Butler Silver Copper Shell With Glass Insert This Auction is for a Vintage Crescent Silverplated Over Copper Silent Butler with glass dish insert and wooden handle. It's in very good condition for its age but does need to be polished. There is a hallmark stamped on the bottom as shown but no model number. I'm not sure of the age but in trying to research it seems to be from around the early to mid 1900's. The only place that I've noticed the copper showing through the silver is on the short side shown in top middle picture. The glass dish insert is damage free and clean. Welcome! Up for auction is a Silent Butler that is marked EPC which means electroplated on copper. Also on the bottom are 3 hallmarks. One shows the profile of a man with a beard. The second is a crown. And the third is an S that makes me think this might be Sheffield. It is in good condition, but the inside needs polishing. I am not sure if the brush came with it, but this was my grandmother's, and she was a real Victorian entertainer, and she always used them together. The butler is approximately 7 1/2" square. For your consideration is a beautiful quadruple silverplate antique silent butler made by the Woodman Cook Company. A silent butler was a crumber(dust pan) and crumb(knife) that was used to sweep away crumbs from elegant tables. This set is hallmarked: Woodman Cook Co. Portland. Maine Quadruple Plate 802. It has beautiful floral etching, scalloped edging, and floral handles. This high end company made their wares between 1893 and 1914 and this piece would have been made before 1912 at the end of the quadruple silverplate practice. A little history: Woodman-Cook was located in Portland. Maine and began as Steven's& Smart in 1879-1883 as manufactures of Britannia ware. They became Steven's, Woodman and Company from 1881-1892 and finally Woodman-Cook Company from 1893-1914 when they were known as high-quality manufactures of silverplated ... morewares. I believe it is silver plated although there are no markings saying such. Could even be sterling but AGAIN there are NO markings to show the metal's purity. This item needs a good cleaning and polishing. The little floral handle has some"crazing" on it and I can't quite tell what it is made of. Celluloid or some type of early plastic? Otherwise in really nice condition. Very old and classy item from the turn of the century. Clearly stamped Mappin Webb with a capital T underneath. Also has the number 7 stamped on the inside hinge. The picture with handle shows piece before tarnish was removed. I used Martha Stewart's method of baking soda in an aluminum pan and it cleaned up beautifully. Marked on bottom The Sheffield Silver Co with the#269 Fabulous unicorn emblem! There is a light scuff below the emblem. You can see the scuff in the pic; I can not feel it with my hand. Otherwise. The condition of this piece, including the handle is in very good used condition. Shown with and without the handle. Measures 7.5" x 5.5" and weighs just under 1 LB. It was used to politely empty ashtrays. It measures 7 1/2" wide. 5 1/4" deep and 2" 1/2" high. The attached handle measures 4 1/4" Victorian inspired silverplated silent butler! Made by the Sheffield Silver Company which began in 1908 in Brooklyn. NY. They produced plated silver holloware. The company later moved to Massachusetts and became a division of reed and barton in 1974. This beauty features a rectangular ... morereceptical with a wooden handle, hinged lid with beaded edge and claw-shaped handle to open the lid! Notice the coat of arms insignia on the top of the lid. Marked EPC with the insignia used between 1935 and 1950. Numbered 269. The silverplated is very tarnished as can be seen in the pictures. It does have a design in both sides. But it is very hard to see, especially in pictures, please see picture number 3, which is the best I was able to take. I did some research in the internet and found a few that had the same designs on both sides and were visible, and those pictures are the very two last ones. Please look at all the pictures as they are part of the description. It closes perfectly no gap between the top and the bottom. So it can do what it was designed to do, keep your ashtrays empty. Other than what is stated above. It is in fair to good condition with all that patina, it will satisfy the antique collector, and I will leave it as it is and the buyer can make the decision of whether he/she wants to polish it at all or leave it as is. This is made by E.B. Webster and marked with the spiderweb and star marking on both pieces with the number 76. The pieces have an applied relief border of grape vines. The center is a elaborate engraved design of two Griffins facing each other, the scroll work continues on the matching scraper. The tray is a modified half circle measuring 9" across by 5 1/2" wide, 3/4" deep, it is curved and rounded on the round side and comes to a flat edge in the front so the crumbs can be swept into the tray. Antique Birks Regency Silent Butler or Ashtray or Serving Bowl. Top lid has a lot of detail art work and the bowl lip also has a detailed raised ring around the lip. Has a handle to lift the lid. Has detachable original dark wood handle Approx 9" L x 7-1/2" W x 3" overall height. Inside depth 1-1/2" End of handle to front of butler approx. 12.5" Bowl is thick walled and is fairly heavy. It weights about 1 lb 10 oz with handle. Bottom has Birks company logos and wording Regency Plate in italics under one of the logo. It also says ENGLAND at bottom. This is a beautiful piece and can have very many different uses today or can be a nice display piece. Bottom has some small identification letters. Numbers scratched and some other minor scratches or minor wear. Overall nice shiny in very good condition.

This ornate crumb tray is 13 inches long with a hammered tray. Bone handle and decorative band joining the two. The first mark is WH, so I am attributing it to Hannay but am not positive that he is the maker. The other hallmarks are difficult to read. The bone handle is 4.5 inches long and has a split runnning down the outer side. The dish is decorated with differnt types of stylized fern leaves. The most apparent being maidenhair. SALE! I bought it at a yard sale and was told it was either an Antique Bedwarmer or a Saute pan. However. I was told today that it is an incense holder from a church, they used to hold the frankincense or myrrh in it, and when they need to burn some, they took it from this and put it in a censer-incense was NOT burned in this however! Also, the lady also said that she looked up the stamped hallmarks and they they ARE antique and old. It IS silver plated and there are hallmarks on the bottom, which I have shown. The number"300" is at bottom. I know these stamped hallmarks tell the country of manufacture probably, and the city perhaps, as well as purity of metal, the date of manufacture etc. The metal appears to be copper, where the silverplate is worn on bottom. There is a horse( engraving or stamping on the top of the folding cover, ... moreand a small projecting"claw" that allows one to open the cover. My mother thinks it is an incense burner from a church? I am not sure and was unable to find something exactly like this. I admit, the bedwarmers looked very similar, even though the handles on most were longer. The sauté pans did not have hinged covers that I saw. I don't know, I'm sorry, maybe the antiques experts on here can tell me.
