Dressed in a much earlier. Rather royal attire. He has a plumed hat and a little knife at his waist. He has a lot of patina and will need a good polishing. Possibly some wear to the plate(he is 100 years old. More or less) A beautiful. Beautiful figurine. He does look as if his little raised had once held something- a flag or a hoop? SILVER POLISHING PROJECT FOR THE VICTORIAN ANTIQUE LOVER! This silver plate basket is made in the Victorian'Rustic' manner popular in the late 1800 and often seen in the twig furniture of the era. The basket is approx 9.5 inches wide by 7.5 inches tall to the top of the handle. The basket is marked on the bottom'JAMES W. TUFTS QUADRUPLE PLATE BOSTON WARRANTED' with the number 1860. Which is most likely a factory number rather than a date. The metal parts of the basket are in fine condition showing few if any signs of wear. The silver plate is heavily tarnished. I cleaned it up a bit to show the beauty but did not want to spoil the rustic look of the piece. Silver plated serving basket by James Tufts Boston has a double beaded swing handle with flower heads at the attachment to the bowl. Bowl has repousse grape leaves and tendrils. Pedestal base also has a beaded rim. It is 10 inches high with the handle up and the bowl is 10 inches in diameter. There may be small spots of plate loss. I did not polish. No dents.

The sale if for this antique bowl. It is in very good conditon and measure app 5" in diameter. I did shine it for the pictures to check the plating and it looks great.but.if I were keeping it I'd let it tarnish. It looked fantastic when it was dark because the deeply incised leaf and vine decoration was still bright and the contrast was incredibly striking. Oddly the inside didn't tarnish either.

Tufts had an interesting life; if you'd like to know more about him I'd recommend doing a search using his full name. It has a model number of 3439 below the hallmark. The black or dark areas in the pictures are reflections of the camera body. The" TRY OUR'Pick' inscription is just hilarious and shows the humor of a time long past. JAMES W. TUFTS of BOSTON - PAIR VICTORIAN SILVERPLATE BUD VASES - KATE GREENWAY
Up for auction is a beautiful pair of silver plated bud vase holders made by James W. Tufts of Boston. MA. Tufts was one of the premier manufacturers of Victorian decorative metalware, along with Meriden, Wilcox, Derby, Rogers Bros. and others of the era. These are simply charming. Each is in the form of a troubadour or perhaps a boy, decked out in the finest of Victorian Regalia of the time. Each sports a fancy hat with feathers, knickers and a sword. These are very reminiscent of the Kate Greenway characters made famous in the 1800's. They are in the greatest detailed relief and the condition is remarkable for the age. I do not believe these were ever re-plated and each appears to be the original finish. The silver is almost entirely intact with the exception of a small area on the base of one of the pieces. On the other, a small section ... moreof the lattice is missing. Otherwise these appear to be in original antique condition. They will polish very nicely but each has some tarnish, which I will leave to the new owners. Each holder is clearly marked on the bottom"James Tufts" and Boston and Triple Plate. Each also has the hallmark number 1105. They stand about 6.5" tall and the bases are approximately 2-5/8 wide. The lattice holder are 2" in diameter on the interior and about 1" deep. These most likely originally held hand-painted Bristol or fancy art glass vases. Like the ones seen with Cranes or Herons, birds and flowers in shade of pink, blue and other colors. These are still available on ebay and other sites, but there are no vases with this pair. If you desired, they can even hold votive or candle cups which fit nicely into the lattice and you would have a charming pair of candle holders. If you collect the Victorian Brides Bowls or Brides Baskets and other silver plate fancy goods, these will have a special attraction to you. Tufts was one of the premier manufacturers of Victorian decorative metalware, along with Meriden, Wilcox, Derby, Rogers Bros. and others of the era. This piece is simply charming and has the greatest detailed relief and the condition is remarkable for the age. Very Aesthetic in design, this features two butterflies, flowers, bamboo and leaves. There is also detail on the underside of the platform where a vase would sit. This appears to be the original finish and the silver plate is in remarkable beautiful condition. The only issues to note is there is a wing missing on one butterfly. There is so much going on with this piece however that it does not really detract from this minor condition issue. The holder is clearly marked on the bottom"James ... moreTufts" and"Boston. Warranted and Quadruple Plate" Each also has the hallmark number 1078. The holder stands abut 5.5" tall and the platform where a glass vase would sit is 1-5/8" across. This most likely originally held a hand-painted Bristol or fancy art glass vase, like the ones seen with Cranes or Herons, birds and flowers in shade of pink, blue and other colors. If you desired, this can even hold a votive or candle cup for a charming candle holder. Antique James Tufts Boston Silverplate Compote Glass Bowl 1875-1915 !!!
This is a beautiful antique silverplate and pressed glass compote made by James Tufts in Boston. They were in business from 1875-1915. Stamped on the bottom is"J.W. Tufts Boston Triple Plate 2255" It stands 9 1/2" tall x 8" in diameter at the rim of the glass bowl. The bowl is in excellent condition with only some light chipping to the tenon. The base has some very fine detail work in the form of intricate engraving around the top rim and finely detailed birds on the feet. This piece is heavily tarnished and has a beautiful antique patina. Under magnification it appears that there is probably some significant silver loss particularly to the 4 support legs connecting the top to the feet. I've had this piece for some time and have enjoyed it the way it is. I don't think it would look as good if it was shiny silver. ... moreI suppose it could probably be restored if so desired.
