It has the production/pattern/patent number 1933. Overall this figural toothpick holder is in excellent condition. It has a nice darkish patina. The silverplate is in excellent condition. There is no pitting, and there are no broken bits, or repairs. When it was originally made it would have had reins(silver or copper wire) from the cherubs hand to the turtles mouth. A silversmith could easily add this for less than $50, but I did not want to interfere with this piece and leave it to the buyer to decide. This is a very rare and desirable collectable American figural. The last time I saw one on ebay(maybe last year) it sold for $950. And I can't remember if it had the reins. This is an extremely rare and unique piece of antique tableware. This toothpick holder fashions a goat. I have done extensive research on this piece. And have not found a match. However, I have found matching napkin rings that go upwards of $300-400. This piece undoubtedly is worth even more. now for the unfortunate piece of news about this. Unfortunately this goats leg is broken in half period while he still has 3 legs that are not broken, it stands to reason I have to point this out. Antique James W. Tuft Silverplate Acorn Toothpick/Matchstick Holder #3445
This toothpick/matchstick holder that was broken in shipping to a previous buyer. It is an acorn by James W. Tuft. The first two pictures show it as it is now. The person who originally purchased it from me said it had been glued where it came apart. I had no idea and refunded the full price plus extra for paypal and shipping. The other pictures are what it looked like before the shipping incident. It's silverplate from around 1899 or earlier. As seen on page 207 in the James W. Tufts Catalogue Supplement from the year 1899(SEE PICTURES! This catalogue is housed at the Smithsonian Library. On the left side are the words James W. Tuft Quadruple Plate circling a four pointed star with a circle and a T in the center of the circle. Just above that and below are the words Boston and Warranted. To it's right is a small"L" and ... morebelow that a number 3445. The large acorn is made of two types of silver plating. You can see it in the pictures. On the base there is one large leaf, some branches, and two smaller acorns(one has lost it's top section but that's part of the design, not because something's missing) It measures 3.5" high, the longest part of it's base is 4" shortest part of base is about 2.5" and the top of the acorn opening is just over 1.25" There is typical patina and it has not been cleaned. The bottom is marked as shown in photos and I believe the date letter P is for 1883. The pattern/patent/production number 89. There is a letter or symbol in front that I cannot decipher. It may be an"r" The crab has some copper on surface so it may have only been silver plated. But I am quite sure they use to put sterling silver onto copper and vice versa in these mixed metal items. Berries, apples, pears, plums, grapes and cherries on the body. There is a band of hearts and fleur de lis around the bottom of the piece and 2 elegant birds provide handles for the piece.
