1880s Victorian Silver Plate Silent Butler Crumb Tray by F B Rogers Silver Co
I am selling this wonderful 1880s Victorian Silver plated. Silent butler or lidded crumb tray, with turned wooden handle. It was made by F. B. Rogers Silver Co. who were a silversmithing company founded in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts in 1883. The company was acquired by Edmund W. Porter and L.B. West, who incorporated the company and moved manufacturing operations to Taunton, Massachusetts in 1886. For several years, the company became known as West Silver Company, and was producing silver products for the William Rogers Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. In about 1904, West and Porter retired and sold the company to William Davison, Carleton A. Woodward and H.E. Nearing, who changed the company's name back to F.B. Rogers. It measures 8 inches by 6 inches. And the handle length is 5 inches. The condition is very good with ... morelight surface scratches and some tarnishing. Overall it is in fine fettle for the age. This silent butler/crumb ash catcher came from an auction in Vermont. The bottom is marked The Sheffield Silver Co. made in USA EPC 300. It measures 10 3/4" long including the handle and 6" in diameter across the top. It has some rough spots inside. See the 6th picture. There are some use marks and a some discoloration. It is in overall good condition.

This is is a very pretty piece. We haven't used it in 40 years. My dear grandmother purchased this in the late thirties early forties. Unlike other silent butler's I have seeing on the internet this one has a shallow dish. Even with the lid up it has an elegant and substantive presentation to it rather than a utilitarian look. It has a wooden button for the lid. Handle is 71/4' It's 10 3/4 long: 3/4 deep: 8 3/4 wide. 4.2 pounds. Shines up nicely. Lid and seams are tight.

This particular one is OVAL- WHICH IS NOT COMMON- SILVER PLATE over COPPER. It measures 6 3/4" x 5 1/4" and is 1 1/4" deep. It has a beautiful braided trim around the outside and COPPER ACCENTS ON THE HORSE. There is some pitting on the inside bottom. But it is not too deep. The handle unscrews for easier cleaning. Vintage"Silent Butler" Crumb Curved Brush and Tray. Silver Plate Western Germany by Quist This lovely vintage silver-plate crumb brush and tray set have" Silverplated. Made in Western Germany" engraved on them. The tray has the hallmark for the F.W. Quist Co. The tray is 6 1/2" across and 5 3/4" tall. It has an openwork pattern. The graceful curved brush is 8" long with 3 3/4" on bristles that are 1" tall. The brush has a pattern of curved lines going down it. The bristles are clean and are firm and flexible. They are mounted in what looks like light colored wood which is then attached to the silver-plated top. The brush has a hanging ring attached to the handle end. Western Germany was used beginning in1949 and the Quist Company was in business until 1981. They are in very good condition. There ... moreare minor surface scrapes on the tray from use. Silent Butler Type Crumb Tray A vintage silver plated silent butler or covered tray is on offer. It has a hinged lid with a thumb rest for drawing it back and a wooden handle. It is perfect for collecting crumbs from the table or for other light jobs where a dust pan might be just a wee bit tacky. It works well with the crumb brush which is for sale in another auction of mine. The silent butler has some light surface scratches. A silent butler was a crumber(dust pan) and crumb(knife) that was used to sweep away crumbs from elegant tables. This set is hallmarked: Woodman Cook Co. Portland. Maine Quadruple Plate 802. It has beautiful floral etching, scalloped edging, and floral handles. This high end company made their wares between 1893 and 1914 and this piece would have been made before 1912 at the end of the quadruple silverplate practice. A little history: Woodman-Cook was located in Portland. Maine and began as Steven's& Smart in 1879-1883 as manufactures of Britannia ware. Is a small container, often of base metal, sometimes silver or silver-plate. With a handle and hinged cover, used for collecting ashes or crumbs They were more common prior to the modern period. And enjoyed some popularity as a home construction project in the US. They are now often considered collector's items, or are valued for their retro appeal. This one was pre-owned and purchased at an estate sale. The hinged lid has a design of a rearing horse. A thumb knob opener that looks like a claw and a wooden handle that is approx. 4-1/2" long. The picture with handle shows piece before tarnish was removed. I used Martha Stewart's method of baking soda in an aluminum pan and it cleaned up beautifully. Measures approx. 6 1/4" long. Approx. 8 1/4" to the tip of the handle, and approx. 1" deep It does show a lot of discoloration(I have not cleaned it) The inside is very clean but it has a few small pit marks as shown in my pictures. This is made by E.B. Webster and marked with the spiderweb and star marking on both pieces with the number 76. The pieces have an applied relief border of grape vines. The center is a elaborate engraved design of two Griffins facing each other, the scroll work continues on the matching scraper. The tray is a modified half circle measuring 9" across by 5 1/2" wide, 3/4" deep, it is curved and rounded on the round side and comes to a flat edge in the front so the crumbs can be swept into the tray. The"scraper" matches the lower part of the circular shape, it is 7" across by 2 3/4" wide and ... morehas a 4" long handle.
