Victorian pickle castor. Metal unmarked, IVT(inverted thumbprint) cranberry glass, hand painted insert, floral spray in raised thicker enamel, tongs x 2, c1890. The castor is about 9.75" tall and 6" wide. The castor is probably original and from a quality company. The number"24" is scratched into the base(photo 7 at about 5:00) The glass insert has a ground and gilded top. There is a small fleabite on the inner rim of the insert(photo 5) which is minor. I did polish lightly, and checked the plating. The plating is all intact with no worn spots. It could be thoroughly polished when received, however, old silver plate looks better to me with some oxide to reflect its antiqueness. My opinion. Added Feb 11. 4:45 pm: The castor has been identifed as a excellent example of the Meriden Silver Plate Co. by an experienced collector/author. ... moreAs a Meriden castor, it would be"quadruplated. The cover of the pickle castor is silver plate and it is hinged to the frame. There also is a pickle fork that is silver plated as well. The condition of this piece excellent. The silver plating is in excellent condition. There are no breaks or dents to the silver plated frame. The frame is marked on the bottom" James W. Nicks or repairs to the glass. The plated holder has had both side attachments repaired. They do need to be repaired again. From a local Ohio estate, we are pleased to offer this lovely Victorian era pickle castor with a cranberry art glass insert. We are often amazed that these beautiful pieces were made just to serve condiments on the Victorian table. Most of us. Today, just take the pickle or relish jar out of the refrigerator and put it on the table! But. In the late 1800's, this would have been a delight for any hostess to showcase her fine dinner as it was passed around the table with it's tasty treat inside. The frame features an aesthetic design with a band of scrolling entwined flowers held off the tabletop on four ball-tipped spade feet. The leaf design on the feet is mirrored in the elements at the base of the ... morehoop handle and on both sides of the open work crest that winds above the top loop. Atop the jar is an ornate highly chased lid with an assortment of garden dwellers- including a plumed bird. A dragonfly, and a butterfly amid a sea of lush flower blossoms and foliage. Tongs with tiny hand pincers and bow finger rests hang from one side. The cranberry art glass insert has an inverted thumbprint design that plays with the light when empty and magnifies the jars contents when full in a most wonderful manner. Beautiful! Marked on the bottom with the Middlefield Plate Co. logo- Quadruple Plate. The words Hard White Metal and the number#96. Measures approximately 10-7/8" to the top with a 4-7/8" footprint. This set is in marvelous condition! No dents or damage to the frame and the silverplate has polished up nicely with an eye-pleasing antique patina in the recesses. Noting the silverplate may be a little worn(not quite as bright) on the pincers from the acidic nature of the pickles. This gorgeous cranberry glass pickle castor measures 9 1/2" in height and 7 1/2" at widest point. It comes with its original tongs. That measure 6 1/4" in length. I realize it needs a good cleaning and polishing, but I will leave this up to the buyer. As for condition. It is outstanding! The gold leaf at the top of the jar shows wear, but that is about it. We purchased this at an estate sale. It does have some flaws to the plating on the lid which we have tried to show in the photos. The stand also has some light scratches. Scuffs and a light ring where the glass has been sitting on it for so many years. The glass jar is in terrific condition with only one very very small chip to the wave like pattern around the rim. Offered for sale is an absolutely beautiful Enameled Northwood Sprig Pickle Castor in a silverplated frame by Queen City Silver. THE JAR WAS HAND BLOWN. HAND ENAMELED AND CRAFTED IN THE LATE 1800'S. THE PATTERN IS CALLED"SPRIG" AND MADE BY THE NORTHWOOD GLASS COMPANY. THERE ARE NO CHIPS, CRACKS OR NICKS. Made between 1895 and 1905. The cranberry insert for this pickle castor stands 4 ¼" high and is about 4 ¼" across the embossed and painted panels. There are six panels in total, alternating between an embossed design and enameled flowers. There is gold beading between the panels and around the base, and the top rim is also trimmed in gold. Amazingly, as the pictures show, all the gold trim is intact-no losses of gold. The enameling is gorgeous.The frame has a pair of tongs hanging on side. The silverplate ... moreis in good condition. Very nice looking Victorian Art Glass Cranberry Inverted Thumbprint Pickle Castor in a James Tufts Silverplated frame. Castor insert is in very nice condition with no chips. Cracks or repairs. There are a few very small rim flakes on the top edge, although nothing very serious.Nicely hand painted floral decoration with polished rim and base. Insert measures 4.5 inches tall and 3 2/8 inches across the top opening. Frame is in very nice condition with no damage or repair but could use a nice polishing if desired. Frame measures just over 11 inches tall and has a very nice Bamboo design. Also has the tongs as shown. I cannot say this piece is 100 percent original as the insert and cover fit a little loosely. Has the thumbprint pattern and has been hand-enameled on three sides with lovely flowers. The silverplate lid is unmarked and has a pickle(cucumber) shape with two leaves on either side. Lid fits perfect. This piece came the Dick Black estate out of Dayton. Ohio. Mr. Black was the artist/illustrator who created Smokey the Bear and Mr. Clean. Very prominent illustrator of the mid-century. CONDITION: Very good to excellent condition. No cracks. Repairs, or crazing. There is a very miniscule chip on the edge of the top of the jar. Barely noticeable. I could not get a clear photo of this. You will see what looks like ... morea scratch on the silverplate cucumber pickle top. That is actually tarnish. Antique 1800s Cranberry Glass Handpainted Pickle Castor with Tongs - Silverplate
The cranberry glass bowl itself is a gorgeous piece and is in exceptional condition with a beautiful hand painted floral design and painted gold accents on the embossed glass. The frame is quadraplate and worn. Tongs are missing one foot, but it's still a stunning piece with the fabulous cranberry glass as the focal point. There is a bit of residue inside the jar probably from not being rinsed out long ago. I’m sure this could be cleaned but thought best to leave it alone! I don’t have a clear indication of the year I suspect– sometime in the 1800s. It was a piece that came from my great grandmother. The jar is 4 ¼” in diameter and 4 5/8”H without the lid. Lid is 3 3/16” in diameter and 2”H, frame height is 11” tongs 6” L.
