Large Silverplate Silent Butler Ash Crumb Catcher Wooden Handle Ornate Knob
This silver plate silent butler came from an auction in Vermont. It is heavy. Weighs 2 pounds, 8 ounces. It measures, without the handle) 9 1/4" long, 6 3/4" wide, and 2 3/4" high to the top of the knob. It could use a good cleaning. There are some use/wear marks. On the inside, what I believe to be copper is showing through, see the 9th picture. A corner piece of the top inside trim is missing, see the last picture. The lid is loose when opened. I do not find a maker's mark.

Up for your consideration is a vintage Sheffield Silverplate EPC silent butler with a wooden handle. It is marked"EPC" and"269" on the bottom. Along with the Sheffield marks.The lid has a decorative engraving on the top of two unicorn horses on it with a shield in between them. A hand with a sword is coming up from behind the shield. This decoration was once red. Some of the red has come off so now it is red in only part of the decoration. The item is approximately 7 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches, excluding the handle. Welcome! Up for auction is a Silent Butler that is marked EPC which means electroplated on copper. Also on the bottom are 3 hallmarks. One shows the profile of a man with a beard. The second is a crown. And the third is an S that makes me think this might be Sheffield. It is in good condition, but the inside needs polishing. I am not sure if the brush came with it, but this was my grandmother's, and she was a real Victorian entertainer, and she always used them together. The butler is approximately 7 1/2" square. Vintage 6" Master silverplate silent butler crumb catcher, silverplate handle
One piece of silverplate I wanted came in a box with lots of other pieces. Don't have room for all so looking for new homes for some pieces. Will be glad to combine shipments. This is a 6" diameter silent butler or maybe called a crumb catcher. Inside nice and clean. Outside needs a good polishing. Most I've sseen have a wooden handle, but this one has a flat, metal handle. Right by the hinge there is a mark too small to capture in a photo that I think says MASTER. In nice condition but does need cleaning. If you look closely at photos and see some dots on the seam where lid meets bottom. ANTIQUE 1900'S SILVER PLATED SILENT BUTLER TO EMPTY ASHTRAYS& CRUMB CATCHER-MADE IN ITALY This silent butler dates back to the 1900's. It was used to politely empty ashtrays. It measures 7 1/2" wide. 5 1/4" deep and 2" 1/2" high. The attached handle measures 4 1/4" Victorian inspired silver plated silent butler made by the Sheffield Silver Company which began in 1908 in Brooklyn. NY. They produced plated silver hollowware. The company later moved to Massachusetts and became a division of reed and barton in 1974. This beauty features a rectangular receptacle with a wooden handle, hinged lid and claw-shaped handle to open the lid! Notice the coat of arms insignia on the top of the lid. Marked EPC with the insignia used between 1935 and 1950. Numbered 269. The silver plate is in good shape as is the wooden ... morehandle. It does have a rearing horse design on the front and is marked on the back. I have this a quick clean/polish and shined up really niceleyl it could probably benefit from another finishing clean. You are looking at a silver-plated Silent Butler. I believe from the 1950's. A silent butler. Sometimes called an ash butler. Is a small container, often of base metal, sometimes silver or silver-plate. With a handle and hinged cover, used for collecting ashes or crumbs They were more common prior to the modern period. And enjoyed some popularity as a home construction project in the US. They are now often considered collector's items, or are valued for their retro appeal. This one was pre-owned and purchased at an estate sale. The hinged lid has a design of a rearing horse. A thumb knob opener that looks like a claw and a wooden handle that is approx. 4-1/2" long. From a local estate. This auction offers a vintage silverplate silent butler or crumb catcher made by the Napier Company. The company startee in 1875 by E. A. Bliss and J. E. Carpenter. It was originally called Carpenter& Bliss, then became the E. A. Bliss Co. in 1883. In 1920 the company changed its name to Napier-Bliss Co. and in 1922 the name Napier Company was adopted. I believe this piece dates to the 1940's/1950's. It has an embossed horse head on the lid. From the looks of the interior, I believe it was never actually used. F. B. Rogers Co. 1883 Silverplate Silent Butler#88 As I was polishing on this piece. I thought of many ways to use it in one's decor. A mint tray in a guest bedroom or sitting room, as decor in a restroom to hold q-tips or extra soap, in a young girls room to hold hair ties, a great place for a man to empty his pocket change and whatever else out of his pockets before retiring for the evening, and so on. The possibilities are endless. The piece has surface scratches and a very small worn spot on the lid. The hinge is tight, the handle is in great shape. The maker's mark is visible, but light. Unfortunately, the brush that undoubtedly part of the original silent butler has gone missing. While its original purpose was to take the crumbs off the table. Today it can be used for small hors d'oeuvres or hold tiny biscuits on a buffet table. Measurements: 8 1/2' by 8 1/2" Condition: Good. Unique item with a Coat of arms with two unicorns and a rising fist with dagger. Not sure of origin of that logo. Item is in nice used condition. Handle not cracked. Inside still very shiny and clean. I did not polish outside. Seems to be some type of scuff mark across top- not sure if it will come off with polishing. ~VINTAGE SILVERPLATE SILENT BUTLER~ Also called a crumber. Or crumb catcher. It actually does catch or hold your crumbs! It opens with your thumb. You press down on the lever. And sweep or brush your crumbs from the table or counter into the catcher. Then empty it. I think these were used a lot in the old days. This one is vintage. Stamped on the back: Made by International Silver Company. Model#657 Chippendale. In very good condition. A couple very minor surface scrapes. Can only see them in certain light. The handles a tiny bit loose. But not much. Cleaned off most of the tarnish. But not quite all. It can be removed and more glue added. Also. It has a tiny screw it's secured with. Any questions. With a black wooden handle and intact working hinges Inside is beautiful and in nice vintage condition overall The outside bottom of the Silent Butler has some scratches as would be expected for the resting area and for its vintage age. This piece needs a nice polish but there is no plate loss.
