ARGENTAN LACE CAP BACK Display, Collectors, Study
Pretty Argentan Cap Back. Nice display and study piece. Approximately 8 inches top to bottom. About 9 1/2 across the bottom edge. Condition is the key concern with this piece. It is deep ecru in color. Fragile but does not seem to be dry rotted. There are lots of repairs in every aspect of the piece. Motifs have been restitched to the mesh with heavy thread, mesh has been repaired. Mends appear to be very old, done at a time when this type of lace was still known. Most are so neatly done they do not interfere with showing off the piece. Another questionable element is the engrelure. Or border. In this case it is a bobbin lace tape of a very simple design. The outside edge of the lace immediately next to the engrelure is a little questionable- the mesh has some little puckers which suggest the edge was refinished when the engrelure was added. ... moreThe inside edge along the center round, however, appears to be true to the original lace. Antique Alencon Needle lace Study Fragment -- Circa 1800
Interesting study piece of very old. Probably circa 1800, handmade Alencon needle lace with tortillees mesh in the top portion. The mesh in the area at the bottom, the"petit reseau" has been replaced with a machine net, and the final inch plus at the top has been replaced as well, with the original motifs appliquéd over the mesh. Back and sleeves have areas of broken brides, underneath it has ruffled net lace, there is Brussels Applique lace at the neck and sleeves are also layered with ruffle lace. The sleeve cuffs have 3 rows of very fine metallic trim and snaps for closures. The inside lining seems in strong condition. Antique handmade Venetian flat point lace collar 17th century. Made up from something else as was often the case, it measures 14 inches(18cm) around the neckline, by 5&3/4 inches(14cm 5mm) down centre back and front edges and 13 inches(33cm) across the back. There are breaks and pulls in the bars which can be seen in the photo's. Nice early piece for study. It has been stored so could do with a light launder. There are 5 photo's. Probably Italian. Milanese style, Meandering tape design in a braided mesh background. Put in at all angles. Probably late 17th early 18 century, but this type of lace is difficult to date. 17th C. MILANESE BOBBIN LACE as 19th C. Berthe COLLECTOR STUDY PIECE
A wonderful study piece for a sophisticated collector. This piece has many stories to tell. Most likely originally designed and made as a Milanese deep flounce with almost no connecting bars. It was reshaped most likely in the mid 19th century as a berthe, or deep off-the-shoulder collar. As it was necessary to connect the recut sections, connecting bars were added in places they never were originally intended. Great variety of fancy braids and fillings. Freshly washed and clean. Very old FLEMISH BOBBIN LACE DEEP FLOUNCE YARDAGE Collector study piece
Deep flounce of early- perhaps 17th century- Flemish bobbin lace. Large scale stylized floral and leaf motifs in typical Flemish style. Most likely was a furnishing lace of some sort. Or perhaps for church use. Very good study material, showing origins of raised work, and methods of carrying pairs throughout the lacemaking process. Huge size and length also shows very well the lavish use of handmade lace. Motifs are not cut at the top. So it probably is the original width. Many of the motifs are still in remarkably good condition, well formed, with original fillings, especially variations of five-hole ground. Many still surrounded by original bars. Antique Handmade Milanese Bobbin lace deep flounce- Study Lacemaker or Collector
Simple elegance is the hallmark of the design in this Milanese bobbin lace border. Design is continuous with the top edge. Very typical of old Milanese. A tiny edge has been added to the bottom with crochet-hook sewings as the lace was made. Just enough detail in the tapes lightens the motifs and gives movement and direction to the design. Background mesh is a torchon mesh. Pairs of threads twisted and crossed, with an occasion highlight of a tally-like device or point d'esprit. Very close sewings as the tapes turn to form the flower petals obscures the turns and makes very convincing rounded petals. Condition is quite good- some breaks in the mesh. Long border of Milanese bobbin lace. Possibly dating to the 17th Century. Unusual braided background mesh, early version of Valenciennes mesh, put in at odd angles, as was typical in the early years when lacemaking techniques still were being developed. Cutoff from a deeper piece. Very pretty little bottom scallop edge. Very long mirror-image pattern repeat, about 21 inches long. Interesting filling stitches, a bit of decoration in the tapes. Overall length 2 yards 15 inches. About 3 1/2 inches wide. Very good condition. Freshly washed and clean. Deep ivory color. Lovely cool feeling of linen thread. From the collection of Pat Earnshaw. BORDER ASSEMBLED FROM 17TH C. POINT DE FRANCE NEEDLE LACE COLLECTOR STUDY
A long border assembled. Probably in the 19th century, from 18th century Point De France needle lace. Design is carefully assembled, even with a little bit of pattern repeat, from bits and pieces of very old needle lace. See photo of section with vaguely tulip-like motifs. Had to have been done when there was still some appreciation for the original designs, and the skills necessary to put it together. Little motifs, however, often are put in sideways, etc. Wonderful array of decorative filling stitches in the motifs, rather odd larger scale fillings put in later. Nice bits of raised edges with picots here and there. Background buttonhole stitch cover bars festooned with picots. As it would have been in the original lace, but is almost entirely added in later. An interesting experiment for a scientist would be to check the fibers of both ... morethe background threads and the motif threads- my bet is the motifs are linen, the background cotton. Lace is edged with a really charming very tiny buttonhole stitch covered scallop. Also finishes off one end. Also has a very nice top edge. Or engrelure of bobbin lace in a very old design. Has been freshly washed. And is very decently clean. How does one assess condition on a piece like this- obviously reassembled, but the border as assembled is in very decent condition. 1 yard 27 inches long. about 4 1/2 inches wide. FLEMISH Maybe 17th C. Bobbin lace Border Study Piece COLLECTOR
I’m basing the Flemish identification partly on the thread- which is very fine. Supple, and silky. The lace is sheer, loosely worked, soft and supple. This contrasts with what is traditionally a heavier, coarser linen thread in italian lace of the same period. The stylized, abstract design can be typical of both. Both head and foot sides are very simple. The way the background mesh is put in- rather irregularly- is a clue that it probably is a very early lace. Length of very early Brussels bobbin lace. Finished all around with later made strip of picots. Remake possibly intended as a 19th century collar. Very dense design of stylized flowers and florets within the leaves. With snow fillings and almost no background. Half stitch and whole stitch both used as background behind design of little flowers. Some very tiny braided and twisted connecting bars. Some unusual elements in the technique(see photos. The lace is pulling away at the collar and the silk ribbon is rotting the rest of the material is sound but there are light marks and some moth holes. Please note the flaws. Suitable for a doll or bear or for a study piece. Approximately 8" flat accross the shoulders. 19" drop shoulder to hem. As this is an original vintage item it may have some other age related issues which is only to be expected as vintage is very rarely perfect.
