ANTIQUE LACE SHAWL COLLAR BONNET SCARF NETTING PERHAPS MACHINE MADE LILLE LACE
Offered for auction today. Is this lovely lace piece. I am not really sure what the intended purpose is for this but I suspect either a collar or a bonnet scarf of some sort. It measures 49" across the top border, 97" across the bottom hem, 15" wide at the center seam, and 17" wide at the ends. I believe it is machine made lace, perhaps Lille, but not really sure. It likely dates from the late 1800's. It is ivory in color. The condition is excellent for the age with no rips, holes, or tears, that I could find. It is a truly lovely piece!

There are eyelets around the entire border. Due to age and unknown storage situations. There is discoloration to the fabric and I counted at least 25 small to very small holes and 3 rips that are 1” long or under. I did not attempt to launder this piece. Covered in exquisite little flowers and dots and with elaborate ends, many of the dots are raised giving it a prettily textured finish. It measures approx 94 x 9 inches and is in good strong antique condition with only a few loose threads but these could easily be tidied up and one or two marks but these are hardly noticeable and they may come out if washed in something like Vanish, please see photos. Antique/Vintage Hand Embroidered Lace Fichu Shawl Scarf Collar. GORGEOUS! Ladies fine net lace fichu scarf. Hand sewn and embroidered. Inner oval portion is place fine mesh/net fabric. The outer lace ruffle is hand-embroidered with delicate dots and has gently scalloped edging. The scarf tapers and the ends would have been tied or pinned with a broach to the front of a dress. And the rest draped over the back of the neck and shoulders. The fichu was typically used to fill in a low neckline. It is an antique dark ivory color. I think it dates from Victorian/Edwardian times. It's origin in unknown but our family is from New York City and goes back to the mid 1800s in NYC. A gorgeous heirloom piece. I was able to purchase a few Victorian pieces that had been stored away since 1933 when the grandmother passed away. These were carefully wrapped in linen and newspaper to preserve them. The dealer was telling me that this cream shawl was popular in the 1840’s and because of the condition and the design thought this was from that era. In checking on line I found this to be true. This has some issues of several open runs along the top edge and several small areas of broken threads. The scalloped edges on the bottom are ruff with hanging threads and uneven edges on the floral designs. I think that with a steady hand a good seamstress could‘fix’ most of this.
