From the French for drum) and creating a chain stitch using a fine hook to reach through the net and draw the working thread through the net. Tambour lace in general came from the Orient where a round frame. Or Tambour( like a drum) was held between the knees and a type of muslin fabric was stretched over the tambour and the stitches were formed with needle and thread on the muslin. In the county of Essex in England there is a village called Coggeshall where during the 19th. century. A form of Tambour Lace was worked both there and in the villages round about. Antique white tambour net lace cotton curtain about 122" long and 56" wide. Hand sewn cotton tape across top with hand made pleats making the top about 36" wide. The curtain head used to have tapes behind the pleats. 3 holes and a rust spot at about 36" from top. Another hole on same edge about 45" from bottom hem. Two smaller holes on oppostite side. This lace is English and has been very well preserved. No holes, no stains, no tears. It is not fragile or dry, it is supple and has a nice body. Top of the curtain has been altered, in that it has been shortened by creating a rod pocket about 12" down from the top. Other than that it is really near excellent. But was told these are French Tambour lace or Normandy net lace. All I know is they are gorgeous. They each have a gorgeous pattern and a ruffle at the bottoms.They are a beige, cream or ecru. The pattern is just beautiful. There is ... morea very detailed pattern in the design with flowers. The large flower at the bottom of each one has a sheer fabric in the petals that are a very soft pastel color. The bottoms have a 7" wide ruffle with a slight scalloped bottom. There are no curtain rod pockets at the tops. You would use drapery clips to hang these. Also included in the 14" long by 70" long matching valance. It is so hard to find these with the matching valance like this! There are some minor tiny holes which will be hard to see when hung. There are a couple minor age stains, which I show with a dime for size comparion. They are clean, with just a slight"old" odor. They would probably freshen up with a gentle wash or soaking. These are in good condition and would be elegant on any window in your home. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE MATCHING BEDSPREAD ON ANOTHER EBAY AUCTION. This auction brings you 3 exceptional antique Victorian original lace curtains. I believe these are point de gaze given the heavier lace. Thick embroidered floral cameo towards the bottom half. The scallop bottom is accented with 2 tassles. 33" wide and 88" long. Generously proportioned fabric. slight discoloration at the top of the tassels. A pair of antique French tambour lace on fine cotton curtains. The gathered tops measure about 44" 1.10cm wide. The bottom 90"1.50 m wide and about 22"61cm deep at longest scallop. The top is gathered into cotton tape with press studs on the wrong side. The top having a decorative binding almost an inch deep. The embroidery is beautiful and there is plenty of it. About 21" deep. 134" wide across scalloped hem and 78" across gathered top. 22 solid brass curtain rings. The top frill has been gathered into the cotton binding and hand sewn in place. The cornely/tambour embroidery has been sewn onto fine cotton"batiste" Freshly washed. Sun-dried and ironed. There is an uneveness in the colour. Some shades of blue white and some of creamy white. One or two storage marks remain but should disappear with washing. A small tear in the top frill. This is another 19th century tambour lace curtain from the chateau attics brimming with monogrammed linen.
