This is some of a large number of antique lace items that were found in a couple of old shop boxes. You are buying a small collection of five antique lace pieces. There is a Victorian cream bobbin lace underblouse- the lace is overlayed onto net and the back is plain net. No sleeves or sides and fastens around the waist with ties. Would have been worn under a jacket with a modesty vest or camisole underneath. Then there are a couple of modesty vests front- Schiffli lace and Honiton lace and a Schiffli lace yoke with shoulder straps ready to make into a nightdress or camisole and a Honiton lace collar or yoke. All over daffodil sprays, swags and deep scalloped edges all around,huge- 118 ins longest x 25" widest c1890 A gorgeous unusual daffodils design. Must have taken an age to complete as there is a great deal of detailed work in this lace. See the reverse of a border section in pic 17. Please note the stole is in as found condition. The worst of the damage is a large rent close to one end, and numerous small holes, I have shown them all, click on any image to enlarge. Scrolling floral border and deep scalloped floral edge,huge c1890 The cape was likely made for a wedding. It is a great shape showing a gorgeous all over pineapple design. Very good quality lace, must have taken an age to complete as there is a great deal of detailed work in the lace. See the close up of reverse border section. Please note this is antique lace so it is not absolutely perfect. There are some broken& missing brides, the worst area is where the cape meets at top neck. Bonnet veil 19th c. Brussels or Honiton bobbin lace applique bride collect CW
Something very old for the bride-a simple elegant small veil. Or fine scarf to cover bare shoulders for the ceremony. Could be either English Honiton or Brussels. The little leadworks in the edge motifs. As well as the tiny bobbin lace dots that powder the fine net field suggest the veil might be appliqued with Honiton bobbin lace rather than Brussels. Brussels more likely would have had needle-worked dots in the field. Tenstick loops were very typical of Honiton. Handmade Bobbin lace motifs are appliqued on machine made net. Probably mid 19th century. Totally appropriate for Civil War reenactor. About 15 inches deep at the widest point. About 38 inches long. Excellent condition. A couple very tiny holes in the net. Antique Honiton bobbin lace sleeves mid 19th C.
Pair of Honiton bobbin lace flaired sleeve ruffles with long net under sleeves. Honiton bobbin lace motifs are joined with background of twisted bars. Lace about 4 1/2 inches deep. Total length about 15 inches. lace about 3 12 inches deep. About 7 1/2 inches around the wrist, about 13 inches around the top of the net. Decent condition. Clean, but with lots of damage to the net- several large tears, and many little breaks in the connecting bars in the lace. Certainly still pretty and useful for a reenact or- the net is, after all part of an under sleeve, and most of the damage is along the seam in the net. ENGLISH HONITON LACE BONNET VEIL Totally hand-made 18th Century The ground is vrai droschel.Made in strips 1.5 cms wide which were then joined and the bobbin lace motifs added. I.e. it is totally hand made and pre-dates machine made nets. I have attempted to show these strips with a close-up photograph. Being hand-made makes it extremely light and soft and must have taken many hours/days/weeks of work for one person to make. However such pieces were ususlly made by several people. Item Description& Condition: Antique Bobbin Lace Collar Lot- Honiton& Mixed Lace Collars I believe two of these Lace Collars are hand made Honiton Lace. The very long Collar may just be a mixed Lace- I am unsure of this one. These have been in storage and not cleaned therefore. The colours may not be true. a. Small hand made Honiton Lace Collar- has three small pieces of damage along the inner neck edge. approx. 16" inner edge approx. 1.75" 2" deep. b. Long hand made Honiton Lace Collar- appears to have had a 6" ... morelong piece added to the end which has been overlapped at the join. I think this piece wasn't original because it has a slightly smaller top edge and there are also subtle differences to be found within the pattern itself when closely studied. The odd break may be found. approx. 23.25" along the inner edge- 2.3" deep on end and 2" deep at the other end! c. This piece is quite long and although shaped at the ends doesn't appear to have much of a curve. If at all for a collar- may be it could be a belt! Although quite fine and light, it would look very pretty as a belt on against something dark. Not sure if this lace would have a name or if it would be referred to as tape and mixed lace? Staining to one end. Spectacular early 1800s English HONITON BOBBIN LACE BONNET VEIL COX COLLECTION
One of the most exquisite early 19th C. bonnet veils. With outstanding large, complex, and exquisitely made Honiton bobbin lace motifs The bottom border consists of two alternating stylized floral and leaf motifs, with meticulously made leadwork fillings. Notice, for example, how the shape of the long grass blade twists in design. Graceful curving grass and leaf fronds give movement to the design. Large lace motifs cover over half of the surface of the lace overall. Probably dates to about 1830-40 The tiny floral sprigs that are scattered over the field of fine machine net also are very precisely formed. With raised work in both the flower and leaf giving them dimension and texture. Veil overall about 44-45 inches across. And about 19 1/2 inches deep. Bottom motifs are over 4 inches deep. Main motifs are almost 10 inches across, and about ... more7-8 inches deep. Deep ecru color. Likely partly from age. Background net is fragile- the largest current net damage consists of two tears in the top corner. As shown in photo. Is very dusty from storage. And needs a very careful bath. Motifs all are in near perfect condition. Suitable as-is for a collector; probably would need to be reapplied to a new net for bridal or other use. Unusual Handmade 19th C. Honiton English Bobbin Lace Cox Collection
Unusual Half-round shaped Honiton English Bobbin Lace piece. Perhaps somone more familiar with 19th century fashion will recognize and help identify it. Tried placing it on a dress form. And it does not work particularly well as a collar edge- the back is impressive, the front not so much. The lace itself is composed of beautifully designed and made motifs with lots of raised rib work. Classic thistle featured in the center. Surrounded by large well-formed roses, and more subtle shamrocks in the background. Condition is very decent- the motifs themself are in mostly good condition. Lots of breaks in between. And some of the edges are coming loose. Tried to show closeups of different areas to moke it possible to assess the condition. Lots of great materials for someone to recycle. The collar looks to date from around 1840-50. Prior to the Education Act which inadvertently was one of the many factors in the decline of handmade lace, whereas children began to make lace at age 6, the education act required them to be in school, thus causing a decline in skill and leading to the'slugs and snails' look of some of the motifs found in later Honiton laces. The measurements of the collar are as follows; Neck- 13 inches/ 33 cm Back Depth- 7 inches/ 18 cm Front depth- 8.5 inches/ 21.5 cm.
