Attending several auctions. The most exciting was perhaps an auction in Northumberland– the entire contents of a stately country mansion called The Hermitage. Time had stood still in this large Georgian house(I have posted a photograph of the house at the bottom of each listing of items acquired from this estate) and diaries and household accounts gave insight into a bygone age of spectacular house parties and entertaining on a grand scale. Amongst the treasures I am listing this week are several pieces of wonderful 19 th century wedding lace. Ribbons, buttons etc. as well as some lovely Victorian costume items. I am working my way through the boxes, ... morelaundering, inspecting, photographing and listing! Do keep looking… From The Hermitage(I am listing some wonderful lace from this estate sale this week) An exquisite Victorian(circa 1880) Brussels handmade Duchesse lace wedding handkerchief. Which was found rolled in blue tissue paper. I have carefully laundered it, and it is snowy white, with no marks, stains or damage of any kind. Such exquisite handkerchiefs were usually reserved for weddings, but sadly, there were no marriages in the family that lived in this stately home after 1914. This handkerchief appears never to have been used, and there are no initials embroidered on to it. It measures 33cm x 33cm. The lace is exquisite, and the finest silk and linen lawn centre is also without damage. A museum quality lace handkerchief with provenance- unique and stunning. More photographs below. 1920's Antique DUCHESSE BRUSSELS PRINCESS BOBBIN NET LACE BLACK VEIL 220" WIDE
This Auction is for A Spectacular Piece of Antique Black Net Lace It was quite difficult to photograph this large piece of lace hopefully my pictures you do it justice. Lower finished edge measures approx. 220 inches wide. At center is is approx. 40 inches long and at either end it measures 65 inches long. I am not sure if this large piece was part of? It's shape reminds me of the bottom of a skirt in the way it is shaped. There is certainly lots of exquisite lace for many possibilities. It could be fashioned into a stole or cape. A veil or used to be part of another type of garment. The lace has bobbin and tape lace appliques added to a fine sheer net. Condition is very nice with very little wear. The lace is not brittle or dry. While placing it for photographs I did find 2 very tiny holes in the net but when I tried to find them again ... moreto photograph them alone they couldn't be found. A beautiful antique Brussels Duchesse lace handkerchief. With an embroidered monogram to the batiste centre. The handkerchief has fabulous leaves with veining. Scrolls with minute infill work, flowers of varying sizes, scallop and cartouche shapes, infill ladder pattern and picoted bars. The stunning lace work surrounds the centre fabric of the handkerchief where two embroidered initials are found. Delicate little leaves. Rings and the tiniest of hand embroidered stitches, wonderfully worked. The lace structure of this handkerchief is in extremely good condition. Although there are marks and also to the batiste. As seen on photo, it seems to have been pleated to fit a dress perhaps, condition generally very good, it measures along the bottom inc velvet 11and a half inches and from top shoulder down at longest edge nearly 15 inc velvet, this is another piece appraised by mrs Pompi parry as a piece of intererst, the lady at the time seemed to be advisor to a museum.

A lovely mid to late 19th century Brussels lace wedding handkerchief c.1860. It has a fine lawn centre with beautiful lace border ~ needs just a little amount of TLC to make it even more perfect ~ two of the corners have lost their infills and brides. And there is one small area that needs a stitch and has lost a few brides ~ shown in the photographs. It has a couple of areas on the lawn that have thinned a little but not split. Would be ideal for framing or re-working. Very clean with 1 teeny feint mark that barely shows otherwise no stains or age discolouration that is obvious. It measures approx. 33cm square. A beautiful piece of Brussels Duchesse bobbin lace ~ an edging for a wedding hanky. It is still in one square piece. Ideal for restoring with a piece of antique silk or cotton lawn for the centre. A lovely framing piece. It is in very good condition, very light age spotting and possibly a couple of brides have broken, but nothing serious. We are a non-smoking house. CUTTER - Nice 19th Century Brussels Duchesse Point de Gaze Collar
Badly damaged but much too good to throw away large collar of Brussels lace- Duchesse with Point de Gaze inserts. All kinds of damage- rust stains. Torn point de gaze inserts, broken connecting bars. The basic lace, however, is of very good quality, and well worth the effort to rescue and recycle individual motifs. Three nice but torn inserts of point de gaze needle lace with lovely rose motifs with raised petals that could be remounted on a fine silk net, or saved as study pieces or framed. Lots of well-formed Duchesse lace. Flowers and leaves with raised rib work, extra layers of cloth work, lots of nice detail. About 15 1/2 inches long on the inside edge; lapel front pieces about 10 inches from neck to bottom tip and about 7 inches across. Center back about 8 inches deep. Color off white; ecru. Antique BRUSSELS DUCHESSE LACE FALL CAP (Lappets) Head Scarf, w/ Point de Gaze
BRUSSELS DUCHESSE LACE FALL CAP. A typical headpiece of the 19th century that replaced the separate lappets and cap of the 18th century. This beautiful handmade piece features mixed Brussels lacemaking techniques: bobbin-made lace elements and four inserts of needlepoint lace roses on a point de gaze ground. The roses have raised rose petals. A decorative technique introduced in the 1870s. The fall cap is quite large and may also be used as a scarf. Each“lappet” is about 30” 76cm) long from the center of the“cap” There are a few weak or detached brides. I noticed one light spot. This piece and the others being offered on eBay were part of a collection of lace pieces from descendents of John Jay. First Chief justice of the United States.

Believe it is an Antique hand made Lace, Brussels/ Point de Gaze/ Duchesse Lace Scarf or Lappet in a gorgeous medium ecru color, which we tried capturing in the photos by darkening the surroundings a bit. We took many photos of this Beauty! It measures 53" long by 5" wide. In Amazing condition, Lace is strong and clean, with no damage that we could find, it has one stain shown in the next to last photo and it is shown up close in the last photo. This piece is even more beautiful in person! Just a very slight mustiness to it! We recently Purchased an Estate of Victorian Era Clothing& Pretties! This is a BIG. Beautiful collar or table centerpiece. Originally a circle, it unfortunately is now in 3 pieces which can be put together. The lace is fabulous. All handmade. Most likely from turn of the 19-20th century. I am not an expert in types of lace. I am making my best guess in the title. But it is handmade without question, 3-dimensional, and fabulous. The leaves stick out and above the body of the lace. Hard to see in the pictures. Check the pictures carefully for the dimensions. I have laid out measuring tapes on the lace. No brown spots. Perfumes, smells, or problems- except the tears. Totally fabulous. Even if you didn't sew the pieces together, the biggest piece would make a terrific statement. Amazing designer piece of costume. Very rare to have one of this quality in such lovely condition. Manufacture of this lace originated in 1850 and it is entirely hand done. The best quality Duchesse has shadings and raised work which can clearly be seen in this fine example. Professional appraisal: This is Duchesse De Bruges Lace and is a woven lace of extremely fine quality. The borders and cording are very well made and the over all piece is delicate and fine but with wonderful detail and definition. This piece and others like it take enormous amounts of time and expertise to produce a work like this. It is Belgian in origins. Techniques. Designs and threads were typically used throughout Europe by the best lace makers. It is an amazing skill and not easy to learn. Size: 89 inches by 12 inches

Pretty little edging with unusual design of nothing but leaves- leaf with taps. And teaf with taps inside a halfstitch larger leaf shape. Nice to copy, nice study piece. 14 inches by 1 1/2 wide. The rest of the veil is made up of a huge amount of flowers and leaves accented with a large variety of different fillings ~ many of the leaves and flower heads have stand-away applied centers. This is the most wonderful piece of lace I have ever had the fortune to own. Even if for a short time, and it is in excellent condition ~ no damage or discoloration ~ just a couple of tiny age spots as shown. Measuring 90" long x 23" wide.
