Antique embroidered tulle lace lappet
This is an antique lappet of embroidered lace on tulle. The work is very delicate especially the finely embroidered scalloped edging. Embroidered cotton applique pieces embellish the ends. It is approximately 6 inches wide at the applique section. 5 1/2 inches wide elsewhere and 50 inches long. Please note there are two seams which may indicate repair and there are scattered holes. Antique black Chantilly lace lappet - exquisitely light and beautiful piece!
A gorgeous black Chantilly lace lappet in very good. Antique condition. This wonderful piece is very light and has beautiful floral motifs worked along its entire length. Black lace was commonly worn for mourning purposes in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in England. The exact date of this particular piece is unknown but a lace expert may be able to offer further information. The lappet measures 144cms in length and 13cms at its widest point. This could be framed for display and added to a collection of antique textiles or could be worn as a modern accessory. It was part of a collection of lace and costumes accumulated by the late Sir David and Lady Barran of Brent Eleigh Hall in Suffolk. Brussels Bobbin lace Lappet circa 1720- 1730. A single lappet of Brussels bobbin lace with the bizarre silk design typical of the early 18th century. There are a LOT of mends. Some are shown in close photos. Wherever you look there will be a darn, mended edge,etc. It does however appear to be mainly original- the back-lit views do not show any particularly odd lines in the design that would indicate it was cobbled together. Whatever points this piece loses for being very worn out and mended it gains back in design. The motifs are wonderful. If they are cobbled and mended. It was done with great eye for design. The overall design is coherent and plausible. Wonderful material for a lacemaker to drawn patterns from, or for a collector to study. Nice array of filling stitches. Single lappet, probably shortened at some point(see top edge photo) Background is a roughly hexagonal arrangement of buttonhole stitch covered bars festooned with picots. Rare example of very old needle lace, classic design. Back lit view shows very little in the way of seams suggesting most of the lappet is as it was originally. Lots of mends. As would be expected in a more than 300 year old lappet. Lots of broken connecting bars. About 20 inches long. About 3 3/4 wide at the top, and about 3 in. at the bottom. Has been washed. These two delightful pieces of antique lace probably date to the late 19th or early 20th century to an age of grace and elegance.
