This is for 2 19thC handmade pretty and delicate Valenciennes lace flounces. They both have dainty repeating designs of small flowers. They are both a lovely soft white color. Finely made and light. The narrow one is in very good antique condition with a well made join approx. 24" in on one side. The wider one has several small breaks to the ground. They both are approx. 2 yards in length. This is for a delicately designed small applied Brussels bobbin lace veil with point fillings and a fine Bedfordshire Maltese lace cuff. The veil is very pretty with finely well done motifs and lovely point fillings. It however does have scattered small breaks to the delicate net. So NOT perfect, please see pics. The cuff is finely done and has a very delicate light quality. So a nice example of this type lace. It is in near perfect condition. With no stains or breaks, just a couple of loose threads at one end. The veil measure approx. 29" long x 19" at it's widest. The cuff is approx. 10" long x 3.25" at it's widest. This is for an extremely fine 19thc handmade Burano flounce. A very long and wonderful point lace. Initially. Because it is very fine I had thought it was an 18thc piece, but it is not, it is actually 19thc. It has a lovely design and not as conventional as typically seen. It has a multitude of fine filling stiches. And is very soft and fluid The motifs of this length. Because the ground is very fine also seem to float in the air. It is not an applied lace. The ground as well as the motifs are handmade. It is a very long length. Approx. 117" x 4" in width. It is NOT perfect. As it has 6 very well made joins done in the time and a few scattered small openings in the very fine net. It is an ecru color. I don't see any stains, has not been cleaned and is in found condition. 2 stunning antique 19th century embroidered tulle Carrickmacross + French doilies. From a family collection, as well as linen and lace, Victorian and Edwardian costume and accessories from a country house estate in SW Scotland, and some of the unusual items I acquired at the auctions I attended across the UK recently. I am also laundering and sorting out the remaining boxes of textiles and treasures from France- including some fabulous antique fabrics for projects. My fist buying trip to France this Spring is now organized– and my contacts have all received a long“wish list” 2 beautiful antique tulle whitework embroideries: a French fond de bonnet- bonnet crown. Hand embroidered with dense stitching, and an Irish Carrickmacross ... moretulle and appliqe work lace doily. The square doily measures 35cm x 35cm. it is in excellent condition, with no damage that I can spot. The bonnet crown is also in good condition, with just a couple of pinprick breaks in the tulle. The embroidered part measures 18cm x 20cm. I have not laundered these, but apart from a few small storage marks, they are clean and tidy. More photographs below. PLEASE READ. I sell antique and vintage textiles and ephemera- unique items that have history. And may show signs of this- it is part of their charm. I try to describe any obvious faults as truthfully as I can. I am honoured to have the advice of a lace collector of 30 years experience in my lace listings this week. HOWEVER. She is in a different country and bases her opinions on my images only. You must look at the images and decide for yourself. The generosity of the antique textiles expert continues to overwhelm me. Nowhere else will we find such help and support. Here is a good example of'Buyer Beware! Although a pretty piece of cotton Brussels lace application. I actually bought it labelled as'18th Century Point de Argentan' It didn't ... moreappear 18th Century to me. So I asked the lace mentor. I notice that the fall cap has a sewn-on label saying'Point d'Argentan' That is idiocy and should be removed. Argentan is an extremely fine and expensive 18th century French needlepoint with a buttonholed mesh. This is a mid-19th century Brussels cotton bobbin lace of ordinary quality applied on machine-made net. So there we have it! Having said that. The fall cap is pretty and in good condition. Mid 19th Century, it would have been worn with the crinoline dresses of the period. It would either be worn alone indoors, or underneath a bonnet outdoors. Very clean and fresh appearance but with minor spotting of stain[will probably rinse out] and there may be some broken bars that I cannot identify. Have a good look at the pictures. Other than that. Just two tiny holes close together in the ground. Perfectly wearable or nice to display. The'lappets' are quite long and make a statement. Pl ease do take a look in my shop if you have the time! We are not lace experts but do think this is a needle lace due to the fineness of the soft cotton or silk thread under magnification with a loupe, see numerous close-ups) It measures 41-1/2” wide x 12” deep at the center tapering to 5-1/4” wide on the ends. The condition is very good with no rips, tears, stains, or repairs– just an occasional miniscule pinhead size hole to the net, see close-ups. Estate found nineteenth century Victorian ladies black silk veil with a continuous floral border, four bouquets and a multitude of floral sprigs on the net ground. We are not lace experts but think that this is a handmade(or bobbin) lace veil due to the fineness of the soft silk thread under magnification with a loupe. Upon very close inspection the design appears to be embroidered or woven into the net ground, see extreme close-ups) Attached to the veil with a straight pin is an old handwritten note in a cursive thread which reads: This veil belonged to my mother(Mrs. Hannah Phripp Sleight) March 11, 1878/ Caroline M. Hitchcock” we removed the pin& sleeved the note) It measures 40” long x37-1/2” wide. The condition is good with no rips, tears, holes or repairs. The tulle is very timeworn but the applique work is still good and strong so it is a cutter for projects. It must have been a splendid window embellishment in its day! The tulle is distressed as the photographs show but the scrolls curls and flowers of the applique work are amazing. All fresh white the applique work is made up of muslin or lawn panels attached with chain stitch. In the past I have seen these applique pieces cut and re-attached to another backing and the look is amazing. 19thc Antique Lace Handkerchief "Nina" Very Fine (6)
A friend is moving house and has asked me to dispose of a suitcase of lace items which have been passed down her family since the 19th century. I hope to get the items listed over the next few weeks. This is the sixth of ten exquisite lace handerchiefs. This one measures 35cms square approx. and general condition is very good to excellent with just a little grubbiness to the centre. The name Nina is across one corner. I have not laundered the handkerchief just lightly ironed so there may be a bit of a dusty smell due to storage. My apologises for the pinkish tinge to the pics. The handkerchief is cream coloured. I may need to fold the handkerchief for posting. No reserve. Will accept cheque drawn on U.K. bank or Paypal.
