Victorian and Edwardian costume and accessories from a country house estate in SW Scotland as well as some of the unusual items I acquired at the auctions I attended across the UK recently. I am also laundering and sorting out the remaining boxes of textiles and ephemera from France- including some fabulous antique fabrics for projects- and am busy planning my next buying trip at the beginning of April! A wonderful collection of 5 different fine black tulle and netting edging and insert lace. All dating to around 1890. All in good condition- there me be the odd small hole I have missed. Looking at the first photograph from left to right, ... morethe lengths measure: 9cm x 150cm, 7cm x 190cm, 5cm x 300cm, 8cm x 190cm and 8cm x 180cm- over 10 metres in all. It measures 36" by 72" long. It is overall in Very Good Condition with an occasional scraggly thread around the edges and only 1 small hole. We are not lace experts but do think this is a needle lace due to the fineness of the soft cotton or silk thread under magnification with a loupe, see numerous close-ups) It measures 41-1/2” wide x 12” deep at the center tapering to 5-1/4” wide on the ends. The condition is very good with no rips, tears, stains, or repairs– just an occasional miniscule pinhead size hole to the net, see close-ups. Estate found nineteenth century Victorian ladies black silk veil with a continuous floral border, four bouquets and a multitude of floral sprigs on the net ground. We are not lace experts but think that this is a handmade(or bobbin) lace veil due to the fineness of the soft silk thread under magnification with a loupe. Upon very close inspection the design appears to be embroidered or woven into the net ground, see extreme close-ups) Attached to the veil with a straight pin is an old handwritten note in a cursive thread which reads: This veil belonged to my mother(Mrs. Hannah Phripp Sleight) March 11, 1878/ Caroline M. Hitchcock” we removed the pin& sleeved the note) It measures 40” long x37-1/2” wide. The condition is good with no rips, tears, holes or repairs. A really lovely. ... moreLarge size estate found mid-nineteenth century black French Chantilly lace mourning shawl or mantilla with ornate floral rose cartouches on the net ground. The mantilla is triangular in shape and measures an impressive 115” wide x 56” deep to the point. It’s made of a very fine(cotton or silk) thread on a net ground. The design consists of elaborate sprays inside oval cartouches, the ground filled with leaves& swags. Condition: There is an old 3” tear/separation in the middle of the top border and an area of loss to the net measuring approximately 3” x 2” just below; a vertical separation to the net measuring approximately 7” in length just above the deep border on the point; an approximate 2” long area of scattered loss to the net at the approximate 2:00 position on the center cartouche(the largest of which is a 7/16” hole) a few eraser head size holes to the net in the same cartouche and various other scattered pinhead& eraser head size holes throughout.
