A nice pair of 1860s engageantes or sleeves. Entirely hand sewn. Including the whitework embroidery which was the foreunner of Broderie Anglais work. Made from fine linen. Fresh& clean. Fabric is strong. Very simple& beautiful with the lace frill set on with tiny cartridge gathers Condition: There are two faint brown marks. One on each sleeve at the top edge, approx 3/4" square on one. 1/4" on the other. There is a break in the wrist band embroidery. Like a small tear across one flower( see pic) on underside. This pair of lace engageantes are perfect for adding to Victorian gowns or bodices with pagoda sleeves. Circa 1850-60's. Antique condition could not be better- there may be a little break in the lace here and there but absolutely lovely and very fresh. Believed to have been hand made with hand made lace tulle. However. I am not an expert so please study the photos. Very good condition with a piece of damage close to the top hem on one of the two side seams of both sleeves. One of them has a piece of seam which needs to be re-joined as per photo. The sleeves are in excellent condition. A small tear to the top of the inner sleeve and a quick mend is needed to the cuff of one of the sleeves as seen in the last photo. Finely worked whitework on the cuff section and the bell section of the sleeves which is edged with narrow bobbin lace. The material has a lovely soft to the touch feel about it- possibly muslin or similar as it is sheer. Beneath the upper cuff is a double layer of muslin which gives the cuffs body. The top of the sleeve is hemmed. Size: 20" longest part. 23" circumference on the cuff. Condition: Beautiful condition- no damage- as though barely used.
