A wonderful study piece for a sophisticated collector. This piece has many stories to tell. Most likely originally designed and made as a Milanese deep flounce with almost no connecting bars. It was reshaped most likely in the mid 19th century as a berthe, or deep off-the-shoulder collar. As it was necessary to connect the recut sections, connecting bars were added in places they never were originally intended. Great variety of fancy braids and fillings. Freshly washed and clean. Long border of Milanese bobbin lace. Possibly dating to the 17th Century. Unusual braided background mesh, early version of Valenciennes mesh, put in at odd angles, as was typical in the early years when lacemaking techniques still were being developed. Cutoff from a deeper piece. Very pretty little bottom scallop edge. Very long mirror-image pattern repeat, about 21 inches long. Interesting filling stitches, a bit of decoration in the tapes. Overall length 2 yards 15 inches. About 3 1/2 inches wide. Very good condition. Freshly washed and clean. Deep ivory color. Lovely cool feeling of linen thread. From the collection of Pat Earnshaw. Antique Handmade Milanese Bobbin lace deep flounce-Earnshaw Collection
Simple elegance is the hallmark of the design in this Milanese bobbin lace border. Design is continuous with the top edge. Very typical of old Milanese. A tiny edge has been added to the bottom with crochet-hook sewings as the lace was made. Just enough detail in the tapes lightens the motifs and gives movement and direction to the design. Background mesh is a torchon mesh. Pairs of threads twisted and crossed, with an occasion highlight of a tally-like device or point d'esprit. Very close sewings as the tapes turn to form the flower petals obscures the turns and makes very convincing rounded petals. Condition is quite good- some breaks in the mesh. And also breaks and mends in some of the flower centers. Has been freshly washed and is clean and light ivory white. Border is joined and continuous. BEAUTIFUL EARLY MILANESE BOBBIN LACE WITH FLEMISH BOBBIN LACE EDGINGS c1680-1700
This is a beautiful piece of antique linen bobbin lace with 3 rows of lace sewn to linen. The widest lace is Milanese bobbin lace which is probably the earliest piece c1680. The 2 narrower edgings are probably Flemish and date to about 1700 or maybe slightly later. The lace alone measures about 19.5" by 6.5" or about 49.5 cms by 16.5 cms. The fragment including the linen measures 19.5" by 10.5" or 49.5 cms by 27 cms. It is in good overall condition considering its age.
